About Chinese Characters
A Chinese character is a logogram used in writing Chinese, Japanese, sometimes Korean, and formerly Vietnamese. A complete writing system in Chinese characters appeared in China 3200 years ago during the Shang dynasty, making it what is believed to be the oldest “surviving” writing system. However, as the symbols used are predominantly pictographs, the linkages to the modern Chinese writing system would be decipherable only to linguistic archaeologists. The oracle bone inscriptions were discovered at what is now called the Yin Ruins near Anyang city in 1899. Sumerian cuneiform is currently regarded as being the oldest known writing system having originated about 3200 B.C. In a 2003 archeological dig at Jiahu in Henan province in western China, various Neolithic signs were found inscribed on tortoise shells which date back as early as the 7th millennium BC, and may represent possible precursors of the Chinese script, although there has been no link establis ...

2007-08-14 08:51:10
The Traditional Chinese holidays have been part of Chinese tradition for thousands of years;
they are an essential part of Chinese culture. Many holidays are associated with Chinese mythology and folklore tales, but more realistically, they probably originated from ancient farmer rituals for celebrating harvests or prayer offerings. The most important Chinese holiday is the Chinese New Year (Spring Festival); it is also celebrated in Japan, Korea, Vietnam, and other Asian countries.
All traditional holidays are scheduled according to the Chinese calendar (except the Ching Ming and Winter Solstice days, falling on the respective Jie qi in the Agricultural calendar).
The traditional holidays are also part of modern holidays in China.

President Susan Decker purchased about $1.1 million of the Internet company’s shares this week just after the stock hit a three-year low.In a U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filing this week, Decker revealed she had purchased about 47,000 shares of the company on Aug. 7 and Aug. 8.
The buy was Decker’s first ever open-market stock purchase, according to filing tracker InsiderScore.com, and came one-day after the stock fell to $22.44 - its lowest level since March 2004.
Decker’s buy was “just the fourth by any Yahoo insider in more than four years; and, the largest by any Yahoo insider in more than four years,” InsiderScore analysts wrote in a research note Friday. “The buy also bucks a trend in the technology sector, where insiders have been sitting out the recent buying binge.”
Most of Decker’s holdings in the company have been acquired through restricted stock awards.

How to get an international job
2007-08-13 07:09:04
(Fortune) — Dear Annie: I’ve always loved to travel - my dad is British and my mom is Israeli, so I grew up traveling extensively in Europe and Africa. I also speak 3 languages. I’ll be graduating from college in January and, since “global” is the big buzzword in business these days, I want to find some kind of international job. But where do I start? Should I go through a job-search agency? -Ari
Dear Ari: Your love of travel may serve you well in your job hunt — or then again, it may not matter. Katharine Brooks, director of liberal arts career services at the University of Texas at Austin, has spent the past 20 years researching the international job market and advising hopefuls such as yourself. “It surprises lots of people to learn that about 80% of international jobs — that is, jobs with American employers that require you to deal extensively with other countries — are located in the U.S.,” she notes.

The Olympic Flag

The Olympic Flag
?On the Olympic flag, the rings appear on a white background.
The flag reinforces the idea of the Olympic Movement’s universality, as it brings together all the countries of the world.
Pierre de Coubertin, the father of the modern Olympic Games, explains the meaning of the flag:
“The Olympic flag […] has a white background, with five interlaced rings in the centre: blue, yellow, black, green and red […] This design is symbolic; it represents the five continents of the world, united by Olympism, while the six colours are those that appear on all the national flags of the world at the present time.” (1931)
Textes choisis II, p.470.
Combined in this way, the six colours of the flag (including the white of the background) represent all nations.
It is wrong, therefore, to believe that each of the colours cor-responds to a certain continent !
At the Olympic Games, the flag is brought into the stadium during the opening ceremony. Since th ...

Beijing to test traffic’s impact on air quality
2007-08-12 05:29:36
(BEIJING, August 10) — Beijing plans to cut the number of vehicles on the roads by 1.3 million in a four-day test to ease traffic congestion and see how much the air quality changes, officials announced on Friday.
From 17-20 August, in the midst of the Good Luck Beijing sports events, the municipal government will take restrictive measures and collect data on the interrelation between the emission cut and air quality improvement, thus accumulating experience to ensure a favorable environment for next summer’s Olympic Games, Du Shaozhong, spokesman for the Municipal Environmental Protection Bureasu told a press conference at Beijing Olympic Media Center.
During the period, 70 percent of government and enterprise-owned vehicles will be ordered off the roads, and personal vehicles must follow the license plate system: on August 17 and 19 (Friday and Sunday) only vehicles with a licensed plate number ending with an odd numeral will be allowed on the roads, and on August 18 and ...
