Thousand-artist concert in Shanghai

A grand orchestral concert featuring six symphony orchestras and dozens of renowned artists will be performed during the upcoming 8th Shanghai International Arts Festival, which is scheduled to be held from Oct. 18 to Nov. 18, 2007.    The two-day grand concert is also designed to mark the 910-day countdown of the Shanghai World Expo 2010.     It is the first time for China to organize such a large-scale concert, which is expected to involve some 1,000 artists.     Chen Zuohuang will be the musical director and conductor. Canada’s Toronto Film Festival Thursday announced its final lineup of 73 candidate films, including Chinese directors Ang Lee’s “Lust, Caution” and Alexi Tan’s “Blood Brothers”.    Ang Lee’s latest work “Lust, Caution”, featuring the “Brokeback Mountain” director’s return to romance stories, will highlight this year’s slate of special presentations.     Alexi Tan’s “Blood Brothers”, a crime drama set in 1930s Shanghai, was one of the two Asian films to be shown as gala presentations. The other one is Indian director Rituparno Ghosh’s “The Last Year”.     At the same time, the lineup also showcases films by critically acclaimed newcomers, including “4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days” by Romanian director Cristian Mungiu, the Palme d’Or winner at Cannes.     The festival is set to last from September 6 to 15. ...

Foreign Tourists to China Up 18.47% in 1st Half Year

Nearly 12.12 million foreigners came to the Chinese mainland for sightseeing from January to June, up 18.47 percent year-on-year, according to the latest figures from the China National Tourism Administration (CNTA). The growth rate more than tripled the 6.1-percent increase for all inbound tourists to the Chinese mainland, who added up to 63.37 million in the first half of the year. It also overtook the 4.22-percent rise for tourists from Hong Kong, 0.56-percent rise for tourists from Macao and 8.84-percent rise for tourists from Taiwan. CNTA figures revealed that foreign tourists came mainly from 16 countries, with tourists from the Republic of Korea registering the rapid growth of 30.62 percent, followed by India 16.48 percent, and Russia, 15.73 percent. Individual investment in overseas securities market gets green light in China

 Chinese citizens have been allowed to invest directly in the overseas securities market on a trial basis, according to a circular released by the State Administration of Foreign Exchange (SAFE) on Monday.    According to the circular, the Binhai New Area of Tianjin will be the first pilot area for the trial program.     In the early stages of the pilot project, individuals will only be allowed to invest in securities traded on the Hong Kong securities market with self-owned or purchased foreign currency, said the circular.     Before the launching of the pilot project, Chinese citizens were able to invest in overseas stock markets through qualified domestic investment institutions (QDIIs). China to rejuvenate NE rust belt in 10 to 15 years

BEIJING, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) — The Chinese government has unveiled targets in rejuvenating its old northeast industrial economies in 10 to 15 years, in a document published on Monday by the country’s top planning body.    The northeastern region, including the provinces of Liaoning, Jilin, Heilongjiang and eastern Inner Mongolia, has an area of 1.45 million square kilometers and a population 120 million, said the document from the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC).     ”The region will be built into a major powerhouse for economic growth, an internationally competitive manufacturing hub, a national source of raw materials and energy, and an important base of grain and farm produce,” said the document.     Major firms in the region are urged to make breakthroughs in developing and producing heavy-duty machines, numerical-control machine tools, power plant equipment, automobiles and auto parts and railway equipment.     The document al ...

China Airlines Passenger Plane Destroyed in Fire

A passenger plane of China Airlines was almost completely destroyed in fire on Monday morning at Naha airport of Southern Japan’s Okinawa Prefecture, according to Japanese media. None of the 163 passengers and crew members was injured in the accident since the fire broke out after all of them got off the plane in notice of initial flame, airport and Japan’s National Police Agency (NPA) officials said. Kyodo News quoted China Airlines officials as saying that the fire broke out at around 10:30 a.m. from engine below one of the main wing of the Boeing 737 plane following its landing. While the cause of the fire is still unknown, the NPA denied any terrorist attack behind the accident.
