1. MAP TO SANGLA VALLEY2. ROAD TO SANGLA VALLEY3. BAPSA RIVER IN THE VALLEY4. SANGLA VILLAGE5 REACHING CHITKUL Once again gently I knocked the door of Rami Chan's room at Hotel Kinner Kailash, Kalpa. Waited for some more time and slowly turned the knob. It opened. Inside, the room was in semi darkness. On the other side of an antique looking cupboard was Rami Chan. His hand slowly slid down the back of the girl who was pressed up against him and came to rest on her bottom. She was wearing a pink top that exposed the broad expense of her skin above a low slung trouser.I stood completely still! He bent his head and kissed on her forehead, continued kissing on the side then front of her neck ...
" TICKLING TREKS " : Travel India
2008-01-30 19:39:00
TREK 1Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson are out trekking in the higher reaches of Kumaon region of Uttarakhand, India. After a hard day's climb they decided to set up camp at a comfortable plateau. In the middle of the night, Holmes suddenly breaks the mysterious silence. Waking up Watson, he points at the stars, and says "Do you know what this means"? Dr Watson thinks a while and answers pointedly, "Hmmm... Well if you are talking about Orion's belt, then it's position means that we shall have a solar eclipse...three months from now. Then again, if it's the brightness of Venus you ponder on, it suggests that the days will be getting shorter soon. If it's that Indian mythological configuration of stars you see towards south, it means that there will be overall prosperity in India. What do you make of the issue, Holmes? Holmes answers,"Elementary, my dear Watson, someone has stolen our tent." TREK 2 Tony and Jimmy from Bombay go trekking in Chamba region of Himachal Pradesh, Ind ...
TREKKING AND UNEARTHING MYSTERIES OF ICY GRAVES AT 14000 FT NEAR PRESTINE BEAUTY 'CHANDRATAL LAKE' Himachal, India

1/ Map and crash site2/ Kunzum pass3/ Chandrabhaga river4/Chandratal lakeFebruary 7th, 1968, Chandigarh, India Govind Ram had finished his routine army rituals of PT with a 3 km run and was preparing for a shave. He had a small round mirror held in his right hand and a razor in his left. There was a loud knock on the door startling him. The mirror he held slipped on the floor and splintered. The visitor was his colleague, Rakesh, who had brought a railway ticket he had asked for to go to his home town when he returns from his present duty. His entire unit was being transported to Leh (Ladakh in Jammu & Kashmir region) close to the sensitive borders of Pakistan and China. Govind Ram kept the ticket along with his service book and a letter he had to post in Leh in his overcoat pocket. He looked at the broken mirror. A bad omen? he shrugged off the thought. He thought of nothing except army and his duties. He was trained that way. There were around 100 soldiers, all cramped up in the ...
VISITING 'WEEPING TREES ON THE GRAVE OF NAPOLEON BONAPARTE' in Shimla, Himachal, India
2008-01-13 23:22:00
1/ Napoleon Tomb at "Valley of the Geraniums," St Helena2/ The Weeping WillowsDr.Barry O' Meara walked passed the spring and stood near the grave quietly. It was`an early morning in St. Rupert Valley, St. Helena, the tiny British island, some day in March 1823. He thought of the man buried in the grave and the efforts he had made to save his life. However, the death came silently to Napoleon Bonaparte in 1821. Dr. O' Meara thought of the great life of a Hero, a general turned emperor and then sadly recollected the last days of Napoleon in prison in St. Helena. He sighed and looked around at the trees with their drooping branches shading the generals grave. The breeze has started and were producing a whistling sound waving the branches. He loved these trees. He had planted them. Then he felt he he heard them crying. Perhaps over the pain, agony the emperor might have undergone. It was a terrible end. Then he thought, one day he too has to go. He knew what may happen. Perhaps the rema ...
THE UNDISCOVERED WONDER-"THE PABBAR VALLEY TRAIL", Himachal, India
2008-01-08 03:48:00
clockwise from top: 1-map; 2-waterfall at Chirgaon; 3-Kotkhai hills It was 7 in the morning. I opened the windows of my room at Hotel Peach Blossom, Fagu, a beautiful small hamlet, 6 km from Shimla at the height of 2500 meters and my eyes feasted on an incredible sight of high mountains with distant snow peaks. Below at north eastern side I could see the serpentine Old Hindustan Tibet road now christened as National Highway 22 and some traffic heading towards Theog. Suddenly I heard a laughter and some shouts. I looked down and saw a row of children on a narrow path on a ridge dressed in white and blue going to the village school. It was an amazing sight in the valley. I finished my tea and came out of my room into a narrow corridor running parallel to rooms. The large glass window on the western side gives you a view of the hills and the ground as a lawn of the hotel below. As a matter of fact Fagu is one of those rare places in Himachal Pradesh from where you can have 360 degree vie ...
"SURELY GOD LIVES HERE. THIS IS NO PLACE FOR MEN", KEYLONG, oasis in cold desert, Himachal, India
2007-12-17 03:19:00
Map: route marked by meRohtang PassSissu village on the wayway to Keylong through valleyKeylong"lady of keylong"Autum in KeylongHarshjeet our driver steered Tata Indica through series of curves as we ascended on Manali-Leh road. It was 7AM on a cold morning when we left Manali with a heavy heart leaving behind fond memories of enchanting walks in the nearby pine scented forests and gastronomic delights especially of Ludhiana-wala restaurant of "sarson ka saag & makkai ke roti" (boiled mustered leaves paste fried with onions and spices in butter with corn flour Indian bread with liberal spread of butter)! Oh my God! Why good things never last for ever?We had changed our itinerary according to the available time of just 3 days when I disclosed my cherished dream to Tommy Singh. I desperately wanted to go beyond forbidden heights of Rohtang Pass on the road to Ladakh (a region of Jammu & Kashmir, Leh being HQ) as far as we could in 3 days, knowing fully well that reaching Leh ...
TREKKING PARADISE WITH MEMORABLE TRAILS, Himachal, India
2007-12-14 05:05:00
This great mountainous state of India with it's incredible variety of terrains, offers finest treks from easy, one day hikes in hundreds to week or two long tough routes. At lower altitudes, trails wind through dreamy forests of deodars (Cedrus deodara), oak and pine and as you climb up you see pine, are flower strewn alpine meadows above the tree line.I'm mentioning major three treks, though a complete information can be obtained from The Himachal Tourism or through their web site. (from left to right in the map with green)* marked by me. Dharamshala to Macchetar (6 days; altitude 4200 meters; tough):A real challenge of 75 km(47 miles) passes through Triund near Macleodganj. A steep climb takes you to Indrabar pass, with stunning views of Pir Panjal range of peaks and ends at the small and sleepy town of Macchetar Naggar to Jari (4 days; altitude 3500 meters; moderate): It's a 40 km (25 miles) beautiful trek with moderate difficulty level crossing Chandrakhani Pass and offers ...

The sheer geographical diversity, splendor and a richness rarely seen at the other parts of the world as in Himachal Pradesh, India. It starts from the low rolling hills from the south plains of the state, just few hundred meters above the sea levels, rising and climbing on to the north to touch the mighty Himalayas and beyond those forbidden heights the stunning land of cold deserts! 2007-12-07 09:40:00
1/ near Jalori Pass. 2/restaurant on the way. 3/ view from Jalori Pass. There was a knock on the door. Tommy Singh eagerly got up before I could think of anything else and opened the door of our room at the Hotel Hatu, Narkanda. And I was bowled over!In front of me was a vivacious beauty of I think of an European origin. Wow! She entered into the room gracefully, a tall figure with a kind of smile on her face I had been searching for a long time. She wore a long high-neck gray pullover, her blond hairs tossed in front of her right shoulders with a face of a super model and green eyes with a rare twinkle! The blighter! Tommy Singh met her during last night after I had left for my room. Tommy coughed. ' Kiran, meet Monet.... Monet Mazur, we became pally last evening.''Hi,' I said. ' Are you English?' 'No. May I?', she asked to sit 'Of course'. 'Sorry'. 'Please sit', hurriedly I said. She was Polish, alone traveling in India and when I asked her how do you manage alone, ...

NEW FRONTIERS OF EXOTIC DESTINATIONS-LAVI FAIR OF RAMPUR & SPIRITUAL JOURNEY TO HATU PEAK, Narkanda, Himachal, India
2007-11-28 22:28:00
Next morning at 7 we were on to the beautiful lawn of the Hotel Hatu, Narkanda, a cup of steaming tea in our hand and covered fully to fight the cold breeze from the deep valley in the south. We saw two tourists approaching us with a broad smile.'Have you come to visit The International Lavi Fair at Rampur?' asked the stocky one with a golf cap.'Well, no...may be..,' replied Tommy Singh with a bit of embarrassment in his voice'Can you tell us some more details about it...?,' I asked inquisitively. And then we were told.Hungry as ever for the excitement, we decided to leave immediately for the fair at Rampur Bushahr, to a 60 km drive from Narkanda on National Highway 22.It was a beautiful early morning drive with exhilarating cool pine scented air. We came down from 9000 ft to the plains at 1800 ft with a dramatic change in the landscape and temperature. Sainj was a small road junction on the banks of the river Satluj from where the road bifurcates to the great heights leading yo ...

THE ROMANTIC HEAVEN AT 9000 ft IS HERE! Narkanda, Shimla Region, India
2007-11-26 03:51:00
Ist Hotel Hatu, 2nd Narkanda viewA cold breeze caressing my face woke me up. Tommy Singh was standing near the open window of our room 112 at Hotel Peterhof, Shimla looking at the rising Sun. I joined behind him wrapping myself with a bed sheet. The Sun was emerging from a distant forested hill , red and big. In between was an unusual conifer tree dead with it's naked branches, Sun depicting a new life after death, the tree failing to hide the glory of the rising morning Sun! The effect on both of us was stupendous! A great day! We looked at each other, smiled and raised both of our thumbs up. Two thumbs fresh! By 9 AM we were out to our next destination-NARKANDA, a 3hrs drive towards north and at the height of 7500 ft, famous for for it's skiing slopes during January and February. Leaving the beautiful, albeit, aging queen Shimla behind with the sweet memories of my enchanting walks, hikes and her heritage buildings ...
THE FASCINATION FOR AN AGING QUEEN ; Shimla revisited, Himachal, India
2007-11-23 03:56:00
viceregal lodgeLooking at the the towering hills of the Himalayan ranges, winding roads and thickly forested slopes, a nostalgia gripped me as we neared to Shimla, the capital of Himachal Pradesh. The vehicular traffic was increasing. With a dull thud within my chest I thought about this aging queen with a dented crown-Shimla. Or is she still an ageless beauty drawing me towards her again and again? There is no doubt about the decline of this once "The most beautiful and fashionable hill station" in all of India. Shimla is not what she used to be. Over development and crowd is predominant on the flat ridge where houses developed vertically. Matchboxes! Then why she pulls me and thousands others, even foreigners repeatedly? As old times say, once Shimla gets in your blood, she never leaves. She calls you back time after time and at every moment! Introspecting, I had a feeling it has something to do with the seven hills on which Shimla lives, her capability of showing magnificent settin ...
