WILDLIFE MIRACLE INDIA-A LOVE FRENZIED ELEPHANT ELOPES WITH MATE!
2007-08-30 01:05:00
Previous night I had hired a cycle and was returning from an early morning ride to the lovely and lavish forest filled landscape of "The Forest Research Institute", Dehra Dun now the capital of Uttarakhand, India. One of the oldest and the largest in the world, has the most attractive environs in 2000 acres.Suddenly I heard a shout "paper...paper...news paper" from a hawker and something prompted me to pick a copy which I kept in the front basket. My thoughts were also peddling along with my feet. What a beautiful city Dehra Dun was! So close to Delhi. Pleasant climate, flowering bougainvillea, trees lining streets. You could escape the ills of a metro city like Delhi. Ever since Dehra Dun was made into a capital of Uttarakhand, inevitable happened! Crude manifestations of commercialization and officialdom! But my recent visit to the town gave me a hope. Dehra dun still retains it's culture and comfort. You can still enjoy the splendour of "Doon valley"... monsoons, look at the scarle ...
TRAVEL INDIA- to a submerged and a lost city of TEHRI in Uttarakhand
2007-08-26 08:00:00
Another journey, a new hope, another destination and we continue...like life! The bus passed two beautiful places on the way to Chamba, SUAKHOLI and BURASKHANDA and I had half the mind to break my journey...beautiful serene hamlets with the majestic Himalayan views on my left, known for birding and pristine scenery.Chamba was 15 km from Kanatal and soon reached the great valley of the river BHAGIRATHI at the height of 1676 meters above sea level. Arrangements had been at "The Hilltop Resorts" at the height of 2500 meters at the top of the hill. The place surprised me. The resort had everything a five star can boast of at the three star rates! A beautiful glass house at the end of a hilltop overlooking the great Himalayan peaks! A lovely swimming pool at that height. You name a facility-you get it!Next day I left for "New Tehri" known for "World's one of the highest dam"only at 12 km from Chamba. Reaching dam I was speechless! Never in my life had seen such a massive human endeavour-st ...

OFF BEAT SPIRITUALITY AND A MYSTIC TRAVEL,Uttarakhand, India
2007-08-21 00:18:00
They hold regular yoga camps at "The Camp Caravan" in Dhanaulti (http://wildfield.com/holidays) and I missed it due to time constrain; also the beautiful resort "The Whispering Pines"at village Thandhar close to Dhanaulti who arrange treks, angling, camps and many other adventure sports.(http://www.treksnrapids.com/whisperingpines.html) The bus stopped at Kaddukhal a half an hour drive, a base for a spiritual steep climb to a heavenly place! SURKHANDA DEVI, an ancient stone and wood temple. There are mythological stories associated with the temple. At base on the road were small shops selling everything which could be called divine. A typical scent of incense greeted us. The road takes a sharp turn from where you take the steps and a rough path to the great heights of 8000 ft and cover a 2 km distance. In this part of the country, our Gods are known to reside in the most difficult places and that too at heights whereas we are known to be too lazy to try and take their blessings but the ...
INDIA TROUNCED BY EIGHT COUNTRIES! An adventure travel on 32 autorickshaws
2007-08-19 08:18:00
The waiter stopped dead!It was my sudden laugh in otherwise quite room in KANATAL, Uttarakhand where I was scanning the news on my laptop. "Look, we should learn from these guys how to have a fun!"Then I narrated him:August 18, 2007 Rickshaw tales: Foreigners complete ride of their livesTIMES NEWS SERVICEMumbai: Mumbai had probably never seen rickshaw drivers this spiritedabout ttheir job.Wearing jubliant expressions,75 male and female paticipants of the first Mumbai Xpress Autorickshaw Rally let out whoops of joy and raised their fingures in the victory sign as they negotiated the final speed breakerat the finishing lines of a 2000km adventure at a JUhu Hotel. The foreigners, from eight countries, had driven 32 rickshaws from Chennai to Mumbai in 12 days, just for funAs the dustbegan to settle, New Yorker Leigh Allen described the adventure from the day rally was flagged off on August5. "All the autos broke down sometime or the other, some flipped over and many of them crashed. In Ban ...
MYSTIC DHANAULTI, Peace and Happiness in Uttarakhand, India
2007-08-17 00:08:00
I had dumped my car in Delhi and had left for Mussoorie as a backpacker. With a heavy heart of missing the early morning invigorating and serene walk on the "Camel Back Road" on the northern side of the city, I left for the Library Bazaar bus stand to continue my mystic journey to an hitherto unknown world of beauty and splendor. "What are you waiting for" I asked the bus conductor."We have to wait for the other passengers. Children. ladies, old guys; you know, its early and cold. Poor fellows! Don't you want them to come with us?"the conductor replied smilingly. A typical Indian compassionate and an emotional attitude! I thought. People may be more important then time and schedules in these hills where they are in minority to the vast expense of the mighty Himalayas! The bus encircled down Mussoorie with a rattling of the glass windows. I looked around at the other passengers. From Gujrat, West Bengal, locals going to the distant villages and a trio of foreigners, may be French- our ...

EXOTIC PLACES-GATEWAY TO THE GARHWAL HIMALAYAS-Mussoorie,Uttarakhand,India
2007-08-12 16:15:00
The train from Delhi reached Dehradun, the capital of Uttarakhand on an early and cold foggy morning. A 6 hours journey, a gateway to the "queen of hills" Mussoorie and to the upper exotic reaches of Garhwal Himalayas. It sirred a nostalgic memories of my younger days when I use to visit during my summer holidays. Mussoorie at the height of 6500ft with it's reminiscent echoes of colonial past was still a beautiful old queen with a bit of dented crown invaded by rich Delhites and the enlightened tourists from rest of the country.Dehradun though a big town now with sub tropical climate, has its own splendid places like world's one of the largest forest institute and research center, walks, cycling trips and springs to name a few.I proceeded immediately to a small place called "Malsi" to my bookings at the HOTEL WILD SIDE, 15kms, surrounded by forests and hills, away from the maddening crowd. Washing down a cheese omelet and toast with whipped yogurt called "Lassi", left for a nearby de ...
WILDLIFE SAFARI, Uttarakhand, India
2007-08-10 10:55:00
I was about to reach at the guest house near the main gate of RAJAJI WILDLIFE SANCTUARY called officially as the "Rajaji National Park". The reason I stayed at Rajaji National Park was the proximity to Hardwar and secondly it's aloofness, tranquility and peace. This wild life park primarily is a land of elephants, birds, barking deer, wild boars, even leopards and is covered by the beautiful forests, hills and a silent flat river valley."Rajaji" has an adjoining big brother, internationally acclaimed and near to Delhi (5 hours drive) known as "The Corbett National Park" a land of legendary tigers and I recommend strongly to visit. However, most of the tourists flocking to Hardwar or Rishikesh or searching for the adventures on the higher altitudes overlook this diamond in the dust or even if they visit it is "The Corbett national Park". In a way this has helped this park to remain unspoilt and the wildlife blossoming.I couldn't manage to get booking at "The Wild Brook Retreat" (www ...
SPIRITUAL ENLIGHTENMENT-RISHIKESH, Uttarakhand, India
2007-08-05 00:00:00
Next day I went to RISHIKESH for a session on the mental enlightenment with "Swami Ji". I felt great, thanked him profoundly and then decided to experience the spiritual flavor of the place. Coming down from the great Himalayan heights, Rishikesh was a pleasant surprise. The sacred river Ganga, religious chants, three-wheeler "rickshaw" traffic, views of distant Himalayas, noise of loud speakers all provided a perfect setting for a "vibration" and an exotic chaos I loved. I knew what is HARDWAR the big cousin to Rishikesh, where sea of devotees meet spiritually larger than sea, the holy Ganga and submit to it's wishes.Rishikesh is different. It doesn't exhibit the devotion fervor you see and feel in Hardwar. But as I was walking though the lanes and the by lanes, I could see, feel it everywhere. Yes, even the sweet smell of incense; foreigners in saffron clothes chanting, temple bells, people bathing in holy Ganga and the "Sadhus" sitting trying to reach another world! It was past no ...
A SPIRITUAL TOUR-"KILL YOUR EVIL TWIN BROTHER"- Uttarakhand, India
2007-08-01 23:29:00
I was alone in my journey to Garhwal Himalayas, with my thoughts along with an amazing landscape. Why travel? To see what? Why my journey is not reaching to a final destination? Still seeking an abode...or a true happiness? But do I know the meaning of happiness? Whilst one may find a sheer joy in making millions, others may find in helping someone in need; to some it may mean bagging a multi million project and to some, it may begin and end with a simple smile. Why a short happiness doesn't last for ever? Why emotions of anger, frustrations, love, pity, benevolence, hate overtake your logic of right and wrong? At every step I realized that I am being defeated by my illogical and crooked "self"! I am tempted to do things I know are wrong. Anger on on grandchildren, eating stuff -bad for health, heavy drinking or smoking! What happened to my willpower? Is it under an evil influence?Sometime back I met a nobleman, "Swami Ji" near Nanital at his meditation center and suddenly remembered hi ...
MUNSIYARI: THE FINAL FRONTIER-AN ULTIMATE PARADISE: The end of land and the beginning of the majestic Himalayas,Uttarakhand,INDIA
2007-07-28 07:53:00
KMVN Rest House, MunsiyariI reached back at Ranikhet from Binsar with a nostalgic and a sad feeling for not being able to go to the final frontier, MUNSIYARI. With a weariness I was about to leave for my dinner when I got a call.Tommy Singh had been in touch with me from Delhi and often we discussed about Himalayas and emerald beaches of Goa but somehow we couldn't make it together. "Kiran, I need a holiday more so for my daughter Amrita, in a remote and exotic place. I had some problem with her " said Tommy Singh. "What problem?" I asked. "Shall tell you later", was the reply. I told Tommy, nothing could be done in the night, would be able to confirm by noon tomorrow. An excitement creeping through my body..MUNSIYARI ! Here I have a company of a friend who is willing to go to any adventurous place..oh, come on Kiran, go all out to fix it!Next day luckily I got every arrangements made at KMVN guest house, Munsiyari. The accommodation was not availale at Zara Resorts, the second and p ...

2007-07-24 08:50:00
Mr Sharma and his lovable family after their exotic experience at SITLAKHET insisted to accompany me to BINSAR. We made hurried arrangements and finally succeeded to book at "Club Mahindra Valley Resort" through a member friend of mine. So we started early from Almorah after a breakfast of spicy cheese omelet and fried Indian bread with hot strong tea!BINSAR is only 26 kms from Almorah but it took us more than an hour and half to reach. And what a beauty! BINSAR is no town, no village or a name of any settlement. At the height of about 7000ft and surrounded by forests and a panoramic view of 300kms of majestic Himalayas, it was one of the most beautiful and exotic destination of peace and happiness, I have ever seen. The beauty of the place lies in the adjoining BINSAR WILD LIFE SANCTUARY, towards Almorah in the lap of Himalayas! WildlifeAt an altitude of 3000 ft to 6500 ft the terrain is mountainous, an adventure and a trekking delight! The forest has pine trees at lower levels and rh ...

Be Sylvester Stallone-carry some drug or hashish, may be few grams for your personal use. After all it's an alien land! When you land be innocent and and tell confidentially what you have. Grease the palm heavily to get cleared, if you can or be comfortable being the police department's guestOutside airport look for and listen to touts. Don't go for anything"authorized". Take a private cab without meter and enjoy city drive. You have no booking, good! Pay 7 star charges for a 3 star accommodation. At the hotel, ask for the facilities not available and order dishes never prepared. OFF BEAT AND LOST PARADISE-SITLAKHET, Uttarakhand, India:
2007-07-17 15:26:00
Part 1Ranjit, my driver had been a bit uncomfortable.Eight o'clock in a winter mornings every day was probably too much for him! I could see he was tired and tense. So I decided to leave Ranikhet next morning at 10 AM. He was visibly happy. I told Sharma family accordingly who had accompanied me from Nanital . There was a sign of relief on every body's face .I felt sad as we were to leave Ranikhet where we had spent couple of days. We were awe-struck by the beauty of the place,, a trekking delight for adventure tourists, the great history of Rani (queen) Padmini to British who later on developed Ranikhet as their troops cantonment. We loved to stroll Ranikhet's sylvan surroundings, the view of the great Himalayan peaks, especially from "Upat kalka" 4kms from Ranikhet where there was a fine golf course surrounded by pine forestsOur stay at Ranikhet was in a 3 star hotel "West View" amidst all the natural beauty and surrounded by pine forestsNext day we left for SITLAKHET, another ...
