Introduction to Travel in Phnom Penh, Cambodia
2008-04-10 02:37:37
Overview
Cambodia’s capital, PHNOM PENH, sprawls west from the confluence of the Mekong and Tonle Sap rivers. At first glance, the city is a confusing mess with no obvious landmarks. The main boulevards are choked with motos and other traffic and lined with generic low-rise, concrete blocks. Despite initial impressions, however, the heart of Phnom Penh, immediately west of the river, has a strong appeal. The French influence is evident in the colonial shop-houses lining the boulevards, with here and there a majestic Khmer building animating the cityscape.
The Phnom Penhois are open and friendly, and the city itself is small enough to get to know quickly. Phnom Penh may not have much in the way of tourist attractions – the majority of sights can be covered in a day or two – but many visitors end up lingering, if only to soak up the unique indolent atmosphere of this neglected city.
Phnom Penh’s history began in 1372, when a local widow, Lady Penh, stumbled across a floa ...

Overview Guide to Luang Prabang, Laos
2007-12-04 22:56:27
Introduction to Luang Prabang, Laos
Nestling in a slim valley shaped by lofty, green mountains and cut by the swift Mekong and Khan rivers, LOUANG PHABANG exudes tranquillity and grandeur. A tiny mountain kingdom for more than a thousand years and designated a World Heritage site in 1995, it is endowed with a legacy of ancient, red-roofed temples and French-Indochinese architecture, not to mention some of the country’s most refined cuisine, its richest culture and most sacred Buddha image.
The very name Louang Phabang conjures up the classic image of Laos – streets of ochre colonial houses and swaying palms, lines of saffron-robed monks gliding through the morning mist, and, of course, longtail boats racing down the Mekong. This is where the first proto-Lao nation took root. It is the most Lao city in Laos, the only one where ethnic Lao are in the majority and where the back streets and cobblestoned lanes have a distinctly village-like feel.
It’s the birthplace of count ...

Macau Travel Guide And Neighborhood
2007-11-26 08:19:47
Macau is small. That is an inescapable fact. Made up of a peninsula and two islands, the area covered by the territory is a mere 23.5 square kilometres. So do not blink or you might miss something!
Macau Peninsula
Historically, culturally and economically, the peninsula is where it is happening. Its central focus is the busy Largo do Senado. This very Mediterranean town square is surrounded by some of Macau’s most famous buildings, including the Leal Senado and the church of Sao Domingos.
Shopping is a key element of central city life. St. Dominic’s Market fills the alleyways off the Senate Square. Other roads leading off the square are full of shops selling everything from factory overruns to the latest designer gear. Gold shops by the dozen line the main thoroughfare running between the square and the Leal Senado.
Overlooking the busy town centre from their hillside perches are the historic Monte Fort and the ever-impressive Ruinas de Sao Paulo, both Portugal’s cal ...

Destination to Kathmandu Nepal
2007-11-24 05:38:35
How to describe KATHMANDU? A medieval time capsule? An environmental disaster area? A pleasure dome? A tourist trap? A holy city? A dump? All of the above. There are a thousand Kathmandus, all layered and dovetailed and piled on top of one another in an extravagant morass of chaos and sophistication. Though its population barely tops 700,000, Nepal’s capital is far and away its biggest and most cosmopolitan city: a melting pot of a dozen ethnic groups, and the home town of the Newars, Nepal’s master craftsmen and traders extraordinaire. Trade, indeed, created Kathmandu – for at least a thousand years it controlled the most important caravan route between Tibet and India – and trade has always funded its Newar artisans. Little wonder, perhaps, that the city has so deftly embraced the tourist business.
The Kathmandu most travellers experience, Thamel, is like a thumping, Third World theme park, all hotels and hoardings and promises, promises, with croissants and cakes b ...

Krabi, Thailand Travel Guide
2007-11-17 13:11:07
Introduction to Krabi
The small fishing town of KRABI is the transport hub for the islands of Ko Phi Phi and Ko Lanta and makes a nice spot for a couple of nights. Although the town has no beaches of its own, it’s only a 45-minute boat ride to the stunning bays of Laem Phra Nang and about the same time in a songthaew to Ao Nang. Every Krabi travel agent sells sea-kayaking expeditions and snorkelling trips, and many also offer tours of Krabi’s mangrove swamps.
Krabi airport is 18km east of town, just off Highway 4; flights are met by Thai Airways minibuses (B60 per person) and taxis (B300 to Krabi or B500 to Ao Nang). Overnight air-con buses to Krabi leave from Bangkok’s Southern bus terminal; you’ll need to book ahead. Only a few buses drop their passengers in central Krabi: most pull in at the bus terminal 5km north of town in the village of Talat Kao, from where there’s a frequent songthaew service to Krabi’s Thanon Maharat. Ferries to and from Ko ...

Yoga class on the pavillion , spa at regular treatment room (only took photos at underwater spa ) . Snorkelling on your door steps , white sand beach . Ok staff . Free wine tasting at Vinum/ underground wine cellar . It rain in the evening (ants) , nice hotel umbrellas outside the room , we tried and failed to take it home , it dosent fit in our suitcase . The Sacred Bumthang Valley
2007-09-28 15:55:16
We carried on further East into the Bumthang province - a 9 hour journey with an hour’s stop when we spotted a family of Common Langurs (or white cap langurs) and stopped to try and photograph them amongst the forest canopy. We crossed the Pe Le La pass at 3350m and climbed up through the clouds. With ever changing vegetation and rising and falling temperatures, we ascended and descended through 2000m.
We passed a famous Chorten, which is a replica of one found in Lhasa, Tibet. Well almost… according to the story, a monk decided that he wanted to copy the Tibetan Chorten in Bhutan. He carefully carved a scaled image of the Chorten into the only suitable thing that he had handy - a carrot. When he arrived in Bhutan days later, unbeknown to the monk, the carrot had shrunk, which is why the Chorten is not correct in scale, and much, much smaller than it should be. Don’t you just love it!
We pulled up to our hotel at dusk - well definitely after dark. Bhutanese don’t switch on the ...

Mu Koh Lanta National Park - Krabi, Thailand
2007-09-23 12:13:17
As a sailing destination, Mu Koh Lanta National Park makes a fine day’s jaunt. You can snorkel, coastal cruise, trek and bird-watch, with wildlife encounters virtually guaranteed. The National Park is made up of 10 idyllic islands, of which Kho Lanta is the largest. Isolated and quiet, it is perfect for those tired urban attractions. It offers a small selection of quality accommodations. The island of Kho Rok Nai features a red, wind-eroded cliff, dropping down to broad beaches, while Koh Rok Nok offers an inspiring view of Ao Man Sai.
