Very Moé Fashion In Sukhumvit
2007-08-02 16:57:00
I’ve heard about this rather “unique” addition to Sukhumvit Road before, but I’d never had the chance to actually see it by my own eyes… ‘til now. Before you read further, I’d have to warn* you first: STOP READING this blog post if: - you know what otaku means and are extremely allergic to it - you know what moé (pronounced “mo-eh”) means and are ALSO extremely allergic to it - you hate bubblegum pop - the color pink gives you migraines - extreme cuteness makes you wanna barf/bang your head on the wall/commit hara-kiri - you find role-playing and costume-dressing disturbing/pathetic/disgusting - you think the idea of women working in a “maid café” ... ...

Moé Maid Cafe in Sukhumvit
2007-08-02 16:40:51
Opened in February this year, J-Trend In Love is a bona fide “maid café”, imported straight from Japan (from Tokyo’s famous Akihabara district, to be exact). Owned by a Japanese expat, the cutesy café can be found in Time Square (around Asoke, Sukhumvit 21).
The Thais have always enjoyed reading Japanese comic books (“Doraemon” is an all-time favorite, and now there are countless Japanese comics translated into Thai – “Naruto”, “One Piece” and “Bleach” just to name a few), following Japanese anime series on TV (there was the ancient “Saint Seiya” on TV about a million years ago, as well as Kenshiro, “Dragonball” and “Dragonball Z”) and watching Japanese movies (“Death Note”, “Nada Sou Sou”, “Hula Girls” and let’s not forget that “Nana” and “Nana 2” took Bangkok by the storm a few months ago).
So I guess it wa ...

A Cynic At The Beach
2007-07-29 11:00:00
I just don’t GET * w h y * people like to go to the beach. It’s hot and humid, dirty and messy. Where is the pleasure in sweating and squinting all the time (due to the too-bright sunshine), not to mention always having to swat one insect after another? “The view is awe-inspiring!” some said, to which I replied, “I can look at the view on TV; or maybe you can just send me a postcard - besides they all look the same to me anyway!” “I love the feel of sand between my toes!” others claimed, to which I answered, “You don’t know WHERE that sand came from! Are you sure you want that touching your toes?!” “You can relax and read a book at the beach!” and I rolled my eyes and scoffed, “Oh for Pete’s sake, I can read a book in my climate-controlled bedroom, surrounded by comfy pillows! Why do I need to go aaaaall the way to the beach just to read a freakin’ book?!” They would then throw their hands into the air and declared, “You’re just SO cyni ...

Who Says There's No Beach On Sukhumvit~?!
2007-07-29 08:49:34
In case you didn't know, Sukhumvit is the longest road in Thailand, going aaaaall the way to the Thai-Cambodian border.
If you're sick of Sukhumvit CITY life (which actually never happens to me), escaping to the beach is an easy option. The closest beach from metropolitan Sukhumvit is Pattaya, though I wouldn't recommend it, due to its polluted water (you might even catch some funky skin disease swimming in Pattaya's waters!).
But 7.7 kilometers from Pattaya (about 45 minutes by speedboat), lies Ko Lan (Lan Island), a small, tranquil island where the water is still clear and its ecology still "unmutated" due to the absence of too much trash, oil as well as drunk tourists and their vices.
To be honest, I am NOT a beach person (lengthy explanation here http://streetsmartsukhumvit.multiply.com/journal/item/20). I do not enjoy sea water, too-bright sunshine and the feel of sand between my toes (gimme polluted Sukhumvit CITY life anyday~!!!), so at first, I was a bit reluctant to.. ...

A Conversation With A TAXI Driver (PART 2)
2007-07-26 11:00:00
As I mentioned in "A Conversation With A TAXI Driver" (read it here), Bangkok’s TAXI drivers just say the darnest things. This time I was (again) riding a TAXI on the main Sukhumvit Road when the driver, a man in his late twenties with longish hair started to mention that he actually doesn’t like watching those stereotypical lakons (soap opera) but instead prefers the traditional lakons (unfortunately I didn’t catch the title of his favorite lakon because at this time I was busy fiddling with my cellphone - aaarrgghhh). This was quite surprising to me because stereotypically, lakon watchers are usually female, but hey, like I said, Bangkok has some of the most interesting TAXI drivers in the world~!! For those who don’t know, modern Thai lakons are usually filled with high drama, lots of screaming, crying, cat fights and hair pulling - and of course, the stereotypical love triangle between: - The stereotypical good guy character (soft-spoken, riep rooy - meani... ...
