Weird Stuff Found in Sukhumvit
2007-09-24 09:25:00
Since Sukhumvit is so (AHEM) "colorful" and "unique", it's inevitable that weird/nonsense/inexplicable stuff would eventually be found in its many corners. I've developed the habit of carrying a camera everywhere I go, so in case I encounter something worth shooting in Sukhumvit, I'm armed and ready~!! Here goes~~~!!! ...
HARD ROCK Hotel
2007-09-23 08:36:50
It is truly unfortunate for someone who's not fond of sun, sand and surf (like me ) to often be stuck with sun worshippers. This time I had to accompany some friends from abroad to Pattaya. Fortunately, the silver lining on my cynical cloud was the Hard Rock Hotel, a very funky (if not SO commercialized) hotel chock-full of musical memorabilia from far and wide~!! Everything about the hotel was meant to entertain, from the GIGANTIC guitar sticking out towards the sky, to the glass cases housing musical artefacts, to its loud and bright rooms and its HUGE connecting pools. I was one happy shutterbug~!! CLICK ON INDIVIDUAL PIC for a bigger view. streetsmartsukhumvit@gmail.com sukhumvitbangkokthailand ...
The Eight Wonders of StreetSmartSukhumvit
2007-09-20 08:40:00
OK. So I've been tagged by Kamenashifan. Now I'm s'posed to share EIGHT things that my readers don't know about me. Then I'm also s'posed to tag 8 other people to reveal their 8 most appalling, dirtiest, nastiest secrets... Or perhaps just something surprising/interesting. RULES: * Each blogger must post these rules first.* Each blogger must start with eight random facts/habits about themselves. * Bloggers that are tagged need to write their own blog about their eight things and post these rules.* At the end of your blog, you need to choose eight people to get tagged and list their names. So here goes nothing (by the way, some of you might already know some of these points): 1. I am what you call a TCK (Third Culture Kid). Wikipedia has a very good explanation: "TCK refers to someone who [as a child] has spent a significant period of time in one or more culture(s) other than his or her own, thus integrating elements of those cultures and their own birth culture, into a third cul ...
Jungle in Sukhumvit
2007-09-17 12:58:35
Something "BEASTLY" is going on in Emporium... From 14 to 23 September, the Emporium department store is covered by a thick tropical jungle, complete with some very exotic creatures to boot~!! All these wildlife accessories are meant to drive in the point that yes, our Earth needs some TLC. Check out the title - "Save the Global Tropical Paradise"!! However, I'm not sure if the idea to bring in exotic animal species (I'm talking about tiger cubs, binturongs, tortoises, even snakes!) for show in a department store is a good idea... I mean, the place has been turned into a zoo (pun totally intended), with crowds of homo sapiens jostling to get the best views of the creatures. I can only imagine the panic these animals feel when they see a sea of humans on all sides. Extra aircons also had to be put in to ensure all the extra plants are kept cool and happy... Anyway, from a publicity point of view, the ploy has worked very well, as the Emporium is jam-packed with extra vi... ...

A Conversation With A TAXI Driver (PART 4)
2007-09-13 16:13:00
So there I was, in a TAXI again, this time going to Sukhumvit 22. My TAXI driver this evening was a youngish guy, about mid-twenties.   He was listening to one of the usual TAXI radio stations featuring luukthung (folksy Thai music originating from the northeastern Isan province) when I suddenly recognized the song being broadcasted. The opening of the song sounded very similar to a cheerful, childish song I often hear on the Thai TV Channel 5: it’s a song sung by a very cute little girl about pandas (for those of you who don’t know, the whole Thailand went ga-ga when China decided to "lend" its pandas to Chiang Mai Zoo).   The lyrics go like this:   “Mii panda, mii panda, mii panda, mii mii pandaaaaaaaaaaaa~~” (There’s the panda, there’s the panda, there’s the panda, there’s the pandaaaaaaaaaaaaa~~).   The whole song basically goes on about how adorable pandas are: “They’re so cute… so clean… black and white…Let’s go see the panda togethe... ...
Hello My Big Big Honey!
2007-09-13 15:28:58
Why are some men SO obsessed with Thai prostitutes? Is money equal to love? Can a "customer" really "save" his favorite bar girl? What do bar girls REALLY think about their customers? These are just some of the probing questions that "Hello My Big Big Honey!" tries to answer. The book is a collection of the girls' very honest interviews and "love letters" between the working girls and their "boyfriends/customers". One thing's for sure, this book isn't for the faint-hearted~!! Many foreign men from far and wide come to Thailand and seem to "fall in love" quickly with the feminine, alluring and accommodating Thai bar girls. And why not? Thai women are famous for their sweet nature, slim physiques and sense of style. Those poor pasty-faced, big-boned, jiggly-armed farang women don't even stand a chance~!!! But is it real love? These men are often so blinded by "love" (or perhaps "lust"?) that they tell themselves "Thai bar girls are DIFFERENT" and develop a hero complex, a case o.. ...

Asia Herb Association
2007-09-10 10:56:06
The Asia Herb Association has the enviable achievement of actually having THREE shops in one soi (Sukhumvit 24). I've passed all three shops frequently, seen their ads on various magazines and even heard from others who had tried their services. This time, it was my turn. Entering the Asia Herb Association lobby was like descending into an exotic forest as my nose picked up strong herbal scents and my eyes adjusted to the dim lighting. The male (and very pretty) receptionist handed me an order paper where I could indicate what kind of massage pressure (hard, medium, soft) I desired (as a fan of tradional Thai massage, I chose HARD) and which two parts of my body I'd like to be extra massaged (I chose shoulders and calves). The menu was very extensive. There were various treatments for body, feet and face (both a la carte and package). Giving in to temptation, I decided to go all the way and chose the most expensive item on their package menu, "Asia One Day Spa" (2,900 baht, 4... ...
Sleepy on Sukhumvit
2007-09-04 15:06:00
I just HAD to share this with you guys... I was in a TAXI in Sukhumvit 26, waiting for the traffic light to turn green... when a pick-up truck stopped beside my TAXI. And I noticed this: ZZZ... ZZZ... ZZZ... ZZZ... ZZZ... ZZZ... The quick-thinking construction worker has hung hammocks inside the pickup truck~!! I gotta give kudos to this dude - after hard physical labor, he can stretch and relax on his own personal hammock, enjoying the sway of the pickup truck and the soft Sukhumvit "breeze"~!!   Thanks for the idea - I'm gonna get my own hammock, too~!! streetsmartsukhumvit@gmail.comsukhumvit bangkok thailand ...
