Scratching My Head in Wonder and Amazement...
2007-11-23 11:40:00
Woke up obscenely early today, excited as a kid on Christmas Day~!! (Actually, I was woken up by an SMS sent to my cellphone... turned out somebody else had checked today's "Guru" already while I was still deeeeeep in Slumberland~!!!) Stumbled outta bed and forced my still-asleep brain to answer the oh-so-important question: "Where can I get a copy??" I need to see it WITH MY OWN EYES~!! Ignoring the guards' stares (who actually looked quite shocked I was out and about so early in the morning HA HA HA), I spilled into a gas station's convenience store... nope, didn't see any newspapers there... "Mai mii nangsuuphim, roo~??" (You don't have newspapers?) I asked the woman behind the cash register and she shook her head. Crap, I thought... By this time I was staggering around Sukhumvit (why are there SO many people out on the street at this ungodly hour, I thought) when I spotted a 7-11 store. But nope, there were many tabloid magazines dedicated to dara (celebs) lifestyle and goss ...
I (FINALLY) Got It~~~!!!
2007-11-19 14:14:23
Gaaawd... after asking EVERYBODY and their mother PLUS their dog about the very specific "Guru" magazine (the free mag that comes with the Bangkok Post every Friday) which published my plagiarized article........I HAVE FINALLY GOTTEN MY PAWS ON IT~!!My blog entry, titled "The Issue of Skin Color" (read it HERE) was plagiarized and unwittingly published in the "Guru" magazine, volume 3, no. 29 (July 20-26, 2007), page 10, with the title "Is Beauty Only Skin Deep?". It came out FOUR MONTHS AGO, so I had grrrrrrrreat difficulty hunting for it - especially since "Guru" is a free magazine - most people wouldn't even hold on to last week's copy~!! I searched high and low... Braved dust balls... Endured weird looks and raised eyebrows... But now I got it I got it I got it~!!!! The oh-so-elusive "Guru" copy is in my haaaand~~!! Mwahahahahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa~~~~!!! And now y'all can feast your eyes (AGAIN) on the similarities between this "Guru" article and my original blog entry~!!! . ...
I've Been Plagiarized~!!!!!!!!!!
2007-11-11 15:44:00
"Imitation is the best form of flattery", so the saying goes. Well, am I feeling flattered now after I found out that one of my blog entries has been COPIED, STOLEN AND PLAGIARIZED~?! Hell, NO~!! I had the unpleasant surprise when I found a blog with the name of "Nikki Blog" actually has one blog entry that has almost THE SAME words as one of my blog entries. On 8 June 2007, I published a blog entry titled "The Issue of Skin Color" (read it HERE), about how the locals are obsessed with being fair-skinned while the Westerners strive to be tanned. In "Nikki Blog", the blog entry is titled "Is Beauty Skin Deep?", published on 23 July 2007 (read it HERE). Imagine MY HORROR when I found that this imitation blog entry is almost an exact copy of mine. You be the judge; the similarities are SO suspiciously alike, they're laughable: From mine: "Go into any beauty supplies store and you will notice that there are countless of "whitening lotions". " From Nikki Blog: "Go into any local su ...
Do Internet Dating Services WORK~??
2007-11-11 13:00:00
This is a long overdue blog post about my search for "volunteers" to try out a relatively new "dating service" right here in Bangkok.   Those of you who have been reading my blog since its inception will remember that I'd earlier written about MeetNLunch, which claims to be "an introduction service for busy Bangkok professionals" (read it HERE).   Imagine my surprise when one of its co-owners, Khun Nikki, actually contacted me (through my streetsmartsukhumvit@gmail.com address) and offered her dating services FOR FREE in return of a blog post~!!   The criteria of those who can be admitted into MeetNLunch's bosom are:   - must live in Bangkok (DUH) - must be single and looking for a serious relationship (this ain't the place if you're just looking for kiks~!!) - must be a professional (no janitors and truck drivers, please~!!)   So I sent a mass email to all my (single, professional Bangkok) friends and offered them this free chance. Were there an ...

PLAGIARISM - closeup
2007-11-11 09:04:42
HARUMPH~!!Here, feast your eyes on the suspiciously similar entry in "Nikki Blog", compared to the original one in mine~!! She has changed the words now... but I still think she shoulda been more creative~!! HAH~!!Now all I have to do is MAKE SURE that this "Nikki Blog" entry was NOT published anywhere, anytime~!! After all, she is "supposed" to be a freakin' "magazine contributor" (though an unethical one!!); she coulda written THIS somewhere else~!! Why do I have the sinking feeling that this isn't the end of this whole fiasco?! Niyom Pochana
2007-11-06 15:55:46
Over the years, I’ve developed a healthy suspicion against Chinese restaurants that are so tarted up. If the place is all fancy and has a gorgeous-sounding name like “Red Crystal Flying Gold Dragon” (note: a totally fictional restaurant name), chances are the food is CRAP (perhaps they’re trying to cover it up with all the fancy-schmancy packaging). On the other hand, if the ceiling’s got cobwebs, the walls have cheap-ass “decoration” (like the one pictured right) and the name is homey and uncreative like “Uncle Lee’s Kitchen”, then the food is guaranteed to be orgasmic. Case in point: Niyom Pochana (means “popular nourishment”), a seafood restaurant along Thonglo (Sukhumvit 55). It’s butt-ugly (I mean, the tiles look like toilet tiles for Pete’s sake). The cheapo plastic plates and lightweight spoons and forks are nothing to brag about. And the atmosphere? WHAT atmosphere? Oh wait… it’s n ...
Yellow Fever on Sukhumvit~!!
2007-11-06 12:29:00
Pheuh~ After several months walking around Sukhumvit every Monday and Friday with a camera (and getting WEIRD looks from people haha~!!), I am finally ready to proudly showcase my "Royal Yellow" collection~!! These pictures are dedicated to His Majesty the King, Bhumiphol Adulyadej, beloved King of Thailand and the longest-reigning monarch in the WORLD. Adblock Last year (specifically 9 June 2006), Thailand trimphantly celebrated His Majesty's 6oth Anniversary of Ascension to the Throne - the long awaited Diamond Jubilee~!! (Watch it here). The whole country was awash with the color YELLOW, the King's color (His Majesty was born on a Monday, and in Thailand every day of the week has its own color: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday). Not content with wearing yellow only on that special day, today the Thais - from the poorest of the poor to the most hi-so citizens - are still wearing yellow every Monday and Friday (and even on the other five days. ...
A Weepy Farewell to TCDC
2007-11-05 15:27:00
Hear that? That's the sound of my heart breaking. So it seems like the TCDC (Thailand Creative and Design Center) on the sixth floor of Emporium is REALLY going to be closed down. To say that I am devastated is an understatement. It seems like only yesterday when I viewed its first exhibition with rapt attention. Titled "Isaan Retrospective", this delightful exhibition showcased the creative ingenuity of the Isaan people (from the Northeastern part of Thailand - the poorest area of the country), who are often looked down upon by their own fellow Thais (check out the interactive online exhibition HERE). A succession of other equally intriguing exhibitions followed (click on each title to view its interactive online exhibition): "DNA of Japanese Design" "Vivienne Westwood" "Workers (With Money) Unite! China's Shopping Revolution" "Living Under the Crescent Moon: Domestic Culture in the Arab World" "Marimekko" "Mechanics Alive!" Each exhibition was well-executed, high-quality ...

Arcobaleno
2007-10-29 13:42:36
This was my fourth time eating in Arcobaleno. I was very impressed with my first visit, when it just opened early this year. The ingredients were top-notch, the décor formal and contemporary and one of the (female) chefs actually bothered to come out and make small conversations with the diners. But I’d noticed that the restaurant, which serves Italian fare “with a unique Japanese twist” (courtesy of Japanese owners and chef) couldn’t keep up with the number of diners when it became more popular later on, thus making the service extremely slo-o-o-w. The service on my second and third visits progressively grew slower and slower. On my third visit a few months ago, the food actually took 40 minutes to come~!! I’d noticed that many of the other customers were also getting very annoyed (and hungry!) with the snail-paced service. Suffice to say, I avoided Arcobelono for a while (especially after it made me “lose face” with my one of my very picky ...

Weird (and Amazing) Stuff Found in Sukhumvit - PART 4
2007-10-27 12:26:00
What the heck should one do if, while walking on a Sukhumvit sidewalk, smacks right into this? W-w-what is it? Oh, it's a friggin' electric POLE~!! Oh and look~!! There's a WALL behind the pole, blocking the entire sidewalk~!! ******************************************************************* The ridiculous time contol on alcohol sales (no alcohol sales from 11am to 2pm, from 2pm to 5pm and after midnight) is still in place. Thus you'll get to see such ridiculous nonsense like this: A bit overdone, don't you think? Here's another one: Niiiiice try, but if you look just a weeeee bit closer, you can totally tell what they're trying to "hide" under there... It's even more obvious from the front (D-UH):   Besides, what's gonna stop anyone from waiting 'til 5pm and then buying a WHOLE BUNCH of alcoholic drinks?! Psst... I'll tell ya a lil' secret. If you REALLY mustmustmust booze up and it's not "time" yet... What you can do is this: * Just tell the cashier ...
