Very Thai
2007-07-07 15:28:29
So you think the term "Thai logic" is an oxymoron? Perplexed by the tiny PINK tissues at local eateries? Can't think of any reasons why older Thai women ("khun naai") just loooove to wear retina-searing Thai silk outfits and shellack their hair into unmoving, frightening tower of 'do? You can stop scratching your head. Read "Very Thai" by Philip Cornwel-Smith. A longtime expat of Thailand, he has written an exhaustive record (and explanations) of Thai idiosyncracies that make the people charming, lovable and yes, sometimes frustrating and illogical. Why do Thais "sniff kiss"? For those who don't know what this is, a "sniff kiss" isn't really a kiss per se. Instead of planting a wet one on their beloved's cheek or lips, the Thais basically just come close enough to sniff your cheek. This is a deep sign of affection that foreigners find "weird". It's actually not weird at all, and here Cornwel-Smith displayed his genius of observation and understanding of the culture. Thais valu ...

Convenient Romance Without the Sleaze
2007-07-04 14:13:00
You aren't into the club/disco/pub scene. You can't imagine paying for (ahem) "companionship" either. On top of everything else, you're busybusybusy. Damn, no wonder you're single and lonely!!! But despair not... busy Bangkok professionals can now pay to meet other busy Bangkok professionals!!  MeetNLunch , which calls itself "introduction service for busy Bangkok professionals" will do aaaaall the dirty work for you (screening, matching, scheduling)... for a price (there's no such thing as a free lunch, you skinflint). Here's how it works: you contact MeetNLunch through the internet and set up an appointment to meet for a consultation session. You then tell MeetNLunch your dream partner's criteria (example: salary level, education background, still possessing real hair) and they will try to find your perfect match. Once your perfect match has been found (and you've passed their ID/background check!), MeetNLunch will set up a time and place where you can meet each other ... ...

Japanese Kitchen Yoka Yoka
2007-07-04 12:58:11
Newly opened on July 4. It didn't look much from the outside, but Yoka Yoka (which means "very good" in Kyushu dialect) is surprisingly spacious, chic and modern - a real departure from its homey-sounding name. Customers can choose where they want to sit: at the bar, Western style table and chairs or sunken Japanese style seating. The menu is pretty extensive, uniquely written on the front and back covers of Japanese children story books. Unfortunately, everything is written in Japanese, so those who cannot read Japanese will just have to close their eyes and pick (or perhaps just do "eenie-meenie-mini-mo"). Offered are various kinds of bold Kyushu-style sashimi, fried dishes and desserts. If you're hungry, perhaps just go with the rice set (40 baht) which includes Japanese rice, some pickles and miso soup. This being a Kyushu restaurant, the dishes have very strong taste, perfect for those who find typical Japanese food a bit on the bland side. Highly recommended are the ... ...

Asoke Shock
2007-07-03 02:40:52
WHAT IS UP with the bad taste, gruesome, nausea-inducing poster at the Asoke intersection (on top of the police kiosk, of all places too)?! OK, I understand the authorities are trying to drive in the point: "Drive safely!" "Wear a helmet when you're on a motorcycle!" blah blah blaaaaaaaaaaaah... But do they have to slap on THAT poster for the whole world to see? streetsmartsukhumvit@gmail.com sukhumvit bangkok thailand ...
Asoke Shock
2007-07-03 02:27:00
WHAT IS UP with the bad taste, gruesome, nausea-inducing poster at the Asoke intersection (on top of the police kiosk, of all places too)?! OK, I understand the authorities are trying to drive in the point: "Drive safely!" "Wear a helmet when you're on a motorcycle!" blah blah blaaaaaaaaaaaah... But do they have to slap on THAT poster for the whole world to see? Close up: The guy's dead, for sure. I mean, his brains are all over the road. This poster is so shocking that it's going to have the OPPOSITE effect. People will be SO shocked that they will actually GET INTO ACCIDENTS. Such a smaaaaart move. If I were a relative/friend/acquaintance of this dead guy, I wouldn't want his misfortune to be displayed for everyone's families AND their dogs to see. streetsmartsukhumvit@gmail.comsukhumvit ...
