There will be NO ALCOHOL SALES in the whole Kingdom of Siam starting from 22 December 2007, all the way to the end of the next day. OH THE TRAGEDY~~~ Is it because of some Buddhist holiday? A national strike of alcohol workers? THE END OF THE WORLD~?!?! Nah… it’s just the (long-awaited, multiple-times-postponed, much-joked-about) GENERAL ELECTIONS~~~!!! Yippaaaaaaay~~!!! That’s right, folks, we all are on the way of getting a new government~~!!! * * So of coz, everybody should vote with a clean (a.k.a. SOBER) mind; thus, the ban on alcohol sales * * Here on Sukhumvit Road, the election excitement has slowly been building up; and now it’s reached a fevered pitch~!! Nobody can even set one foot on Sukhumvit without coming face-to-face with hopeful candidates pleading (along with their hangers-on) with those weepy puppy-dog eyes, declaring that they would give you the world if only you would vote for them… The moment you step outside, you're assa ...

Blushing Pink in Sukhumvit~!!
2007-12-18 05:00:00
Pink is the new yellow. Yeap; this blog entry is a continuation of my previous one titled "Yellow Fever on Sukhumvit~!!" (read it HERE).** Thanks to Noel for suggesting it~!!While the locals are still tirelessly wearing canary yellow to show their love for His Majesty the King, they have also taken to wearing baby pink to wish good health for the monarch, who has turned 80 years old this month.Earlier, His Majesty the King needed to be hospitalized, and when he checked out of the hospital, he was wearing a soft pink blazer (as shown in this picture I got from the Taipei Times website). There were many people waiting outside to get a glimpse of the King, and sure enough, His Majesty's color choice created a new craze for pink pink pink. Why the new obsession for pink? There are several explanations...- royal astrologers have declared that the color pink is an auspicious color for His Majesty's birthday this year- the color pink is supposed to bring good health- pink is the color for T. ...

LONG LIVE THE KING - fireworks in Bangkok Dec '07
2007-12-16 00:11:09
A WICKED and super cool VDO showcasing the fireworks extravaganza this month celebrating His Majesty the King's birthday. The fireworks were recorded in three places in Bangkok: Ratchadamri, Sukhumvit and along the Chao Phraya River.
It starts up all mellow and then slowly builds up~!! Watch out for the GIGANTIC fireworks explosion at 4:26 over Sukhumvit~!! So bright it looked like a nuclear blast heh heh~!!
Turn up your volume~!!

SukhumvitAngel is baaack~~ and FAILS...
2007-12-13 05:30:00
The peak tourist season is here. No wonder there is more than the usual number of elephants on Sukhumvit. These exploited animals, who are actually one of Thailand’s national symbols, are now forced to walk around bustling Sukhumvit Road and beg for food. A few months ago, these pachyderms were nowhere to be seen on Sukhumvit. Then around November, they started to reappear on the streets (just in time for the Loy Krathong, I guess – read about the festival HERE). Now it’s almost Christmas, and hardly a day goes by without the SukhumvitAngel spotting one of these lumbering giants being forced to “act cute” in front of wide-eyed tourists who are more than willing to buy overpriced bananas and sugarcane sticks for a “cool vacation picture”, in the misguided notion that feeding these elephants on the street is actually “helping” them. ** NOTE: To those who have no idea who the SukhumvitAngel (or “S/A” for short) ...

Sukhumvit Alley between Soi 5 and Soi 7
2007-12-11 16:31:23
Found this VDO on YouTube and thought the presentation was GREAT (especially the background music).
The whole thing gives off some sorta weird, slo-mo dreamlike vibes...
NOTE: This was shot at night, in a teeny tiny alley between Sukhumvit 5 and 7, so for those who aren't familiar with Sukhumvit's many different personalities, this area is right next to Nana (Sukhumvit 3), Sukhumvit's "naughty" side (ahem ahem)... watch the VDO and you'll see what I mean~!!

Winter in Sukhumvit~~!!
2007-12-09 17:12:53
Dum-dee-dum… The weather is delightfully cooler nowadays. Yes, it’s the official “WINTER” of Thailand, and here in Sukhumvit, the locals get to pretend that we actually have “winter” and do “unusual” cool weather activities, like:
- Having picnics on (real) grass and hanging around outside (GASP~!!) instead of making a beeline to the nearest airconed room, as pictured on the right~!!
- Saving money on electricity by keeping the windows open
- Feeling “lazy” to take a bath coz it’s “soooo nau”~!!!
- “taking a walk” outside just for fun, rather than due to necessity
- wearing “winter clothes” without having to enter a movie theater with permafrost tem ...

(Half-hearted) Plagiarism Acknowledgment
2007-12-07 02:49:35
OK, so today is December 7, THE day when the "Guru" magazine s'posed to print the acknowledgment that one of its articles in the "Ying Thai" column was plagiarized from me.
I almost missed the so-called "acknowledgment"... because it came out on the 'CONTENTS' page of the magazine, waaaaaay down below, in such a tiny font that normal human beings wouldn't even notice.
Click on the THIRD pic to have a closer AND bigger view of the so-called "acknowledgment'... But anyway, the font is soooo teeeeny tiiiiiny you probably wouldn't see anything... SIGH~!!!
P.S. I actually noticed first that "Guru" editor Khun Voranai has stayed true to his decision to terminate the "Ying Thai" column... it was absent from today's "Guru".
Background story of this whole fiasco here:

Love of Siam
2007-12-02 15:34:06
Watching "Love of Siam" (or Rak Haeng Siam in Thai), I was distracted by the sniffles of a woman sitting to my left. And she didn't stop crying until the movie ended."Love of Siam" is a bittersweet, sensitive and thoughtful Thai drama which managed to stay away from being overly sappy and shallow. At first glance of its movie posters (full of pretty young faces), I'd earlier dismissed it as another fluffy teenage drama with no real substance.I am happy to admit that I was wrong. Director Chukiat Sakweerakul (who also directed 13 Beloved, another Thai film which impressed me) managed to paint love from different angles with such gentleness that at a running time of 150 minutes (another rarity in Thai films), the audience felt that they knew the two main characters so well. The title might mislead some, thinking that this is a patriotic movie, but the "Siam" in the title actually refers to Siam Square, the fashionable area where the young gather, shop, mingle, fall in love and cry when ...

Blood on the Street
2007-11-29 20:31:00
Things got kinda ugly the last few days regarding the whole plagiarism thingy. If you're the squeamish type, I'd advise you to stop reading now. On the other hand, if you thrive on sarcasm and conflict... READ ON~!! ********** So a few days ago I got a reply from Khun Voranai explaining why he was so adamant I'd NEVER see a formal acknowledgement/apology in his "Guru" magazine regarding Khun Nikki's article in "Ying Thai" column which plagiarized from my blog entry. Turned out these two are personal friends (A-HA~~!!!!!!!!) : Dear Street, The URL was printed correctly, but there was a drop page, so there's a hyphen -- a problem in the layout, which the designer didn't catch. I would be happy to reprint the URL again. But as to your request for an apology in the magazine, I can't help you there, and let me explain why. The articles that Nikki writes are Meet-n-Lunch articles, not Guru articles - as you can see from the box in the bottom and the e-mail link. We have a business pa ...

Weird (and Amazing) Stuff Found in Sukhumvit - PART 5
2007-11-28 01:34:00
So I was walking around Thonglo (Sukhumvit 55), when I spotted this sign for a Korean restaurant… Hmmm… a restaurant in Thonglo called “Thonglo”~?? Not very creative, are they?? Then imagine my confusion when I saw THIS other sign for a Japanese BBQ restaurant with the SAME name (“Thonglo”) just about two meters away from the Korean one~!! I thought I was seeing double~!! Of aaaaaaaaall the possible names in the whole wide universe… Why oh whyyyyy~~~??? (* scratches head with all ten fingers *) ******************************************************************* Spotted this “boobie scooter” at a gas station in Sukhumvit 26~!! I can’t guess whether the owner is male or female… Perhaps it’s a male since males are notorious boobs-lovers… But then again, would a male wanna ride such a cute, girly-looking BABY BLUE AND PINK scooter~?? ...

Buy Buy Krathong~~!!
2007-11-24 22:58:00
Shameless capitalism at its BEST~!!! Money hunters came out in full force tonight to net as much baht as possible from eager merrymakers~!! Here in Sukhumvit, preparations for the Loy Krathong festivities started in the afternoon, when sellers began to display their items for sale on the street. Even motorcycle TAXI drivers became krathong entrepreneurs for a day (pictured right)~!! As with other Loy Krathongs of the past few years, this year's floating krathongs were made of natural materials - leaves, flowers (orchids, marigold, roses, etc.), coconuts, bamboo. Sold for between 15-40 baht, there were also some yummy-looking edible krathongs made of colorful bread (pictured below right) and ice cream cones (pictured below left)~!! The idea behind such materials is because a few years ago, most krathongs were made of styrofoam and because it's not biodegradable, styrofoam krathongs posed a hazard to the environment (plus, imagine the headache ...
