Pocket Printer
2008-01-07 10:42:00
Polaroid, the company famous for cameras that print instant pictures, unveiled an ultrasmall photo printer today at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The company’s new handheld printers produce color photos using novel thermal-printing technology developed at Polaroid spinoff Zink Imaging and first demonstrated earlier this year. (See “Printing without Ink.”) John Pollock, the vice president and general manager of digital imaging at Polaroid, says that the printers will be available to consumers by the summer, and they will be priced at less than $150.Pollock calls the device, preliminarily dubbed the “digital instant mobile photo printer,” the ultimate in mobile printing. “When you talk about most portable printers today, you’re dealing with lunchbox-sized printers,” he says. “What Zink allows us to do is to get ultrasmall form factors.”The printer is about the size of a deck of cards. A user who takes a picture on a cell phone or camera can wirelessly se ...

Nokia E71 and Nokia E66, Soon Available as Nokia Liam and Nokia Dora
2008-01-07 07:11:00
A few days ago, leaked specifications regarding Nokia E71 and Nokia E66 spread all over the Internet, but there were no details that we could be certain of.Now we can know for sure that both E71 and E66 will come at Vodafone in the second quarter of 2008, as a leaked Vodafone Roadmap presentation for 2008 shows pictures and details about the two Nokia handsets. The phones are named Nokia Liam (E71) and Nokia Dora (E66), which is a bit surprising, since the Finnish producer doesn't usually name its devices in this manner. Anyway, this is a less important aspect, what really matters is that the handsets will be soon available.Nokia Liam (or E71) comes to replace Nokia E61i in the business-orientated Eseries family. The new handset is smaller than E61i, thus being more elegant, and it's a quad-band GSM / GPRS / EDGE phone with 3G / HSPDA connectivity, featuring GPS, Wi-Fi and a full QWERTY keypad. The phone packs a QWGA 2.36 inch screen, a powerful 3.2 Megapixel camera, a front camera fo ...

P2i Ion-Mask Coating to Waterproof Cell Phones
2008-01-06 18:15:00
In England, the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory has developed Ion-Mask, a compound that invisibly bonds to surfaces and allows them to repel water and dust. The compound was developed initially for the military for use on uniforms during chemical warfare, and a spin-off company, P2i, is in talks with mobile phone manufacturers about using the coating on handsets. Mobile phones are difficult to waterproof currently due to the need to seal them off. Such seals are not always easy to apply to small devices. Ion-Mask is an invisible coating that can safely be used to seal the exterior of a device, as well as the internal components. Ion-Mask is bonded to the surface of the cellphone using gas that has been electronically charged. Three major handset manufacturers are in talks with P2i to use the compound on future devices, though no commercial availability has been announced. Review: Samsung's P520 Armani Phone
2008-01-06 18:06:00
Samsung's SGH-P520 Armani phone is a high-fashion cell phone that is meant to take on the likes of Apple's iPhone and LG's Prada phone. It certainly has the good looks, and it packs some solid multimedia capabilities into its svelte form, but has Samsung been able to adapt to the concept of finger basic touchscreen navigation the way the other two have? When it comes to physical appearance and design, the Samsung Armani phone has what it takes. It is no larger than 9 or 10 stacked credit cards, 88mm x 55mm x 10.5mm (3.5" x 2.2" .4"), and weighs only 86g (3.0oz). The included case that it snaps into adds a good layer of protection for an additional 34g (1.2oz), while still providing access to the camera and all of the buttons and ports on the phone's edges. It is probably a good idea to use the case, even though the Armani's 2.6", QVGA resolution display seems reasonably rugged. The display is touch sensitive and intended to be used with a fingertip, just like the one on the Apple iP ...

Nokia E90 Communicator - Review
2008-01-06 06:33:00
Nokia's Communicators have come a long way as the latest addition to the series, the E90, arrives more than a year after the 9300i Communicator. The E90 packs virtually all the features there are available right now including HSDPA, Wi-Fi, built-in GPS, a 3.2-megapixel camera, large 800 x 352-pixel LCD (not touchscreen, though) and a full QWERTY keyboard. One of the biggest changes on the E90 from the earlier 9300i is the inclusion of a camera. Nokia explains the main reason for this is to capture a broader audience and also an increasing group of business execs who use their work phones after hours as well.Unlike the 9300i which was based on the older S80 system, the E90 runs on the Symbian Series60 platform which has a more robust interface. Other business smart phones that are on the S60 operating system include the E61 and the E61i, both offering candy-bar form factors compared with the clamshell E90.DesignWhen there's no need for the QWERTY keyboard, we can rely on the numeric ke ...

iPhone Firmware Update 1.1.3 Brings Lots of Improvements
2008-01-04 16:30:00
Some new features that should be available with the update are already known, and it's possible that other improvements, unknown yet, will also come with the 1.1.3 firmware. Probably the first new feature that will make users happy is the ability to drag and drop applications on the home screen. This ability makes it easy for any user to customize the iPhone and, considering the fact that the home screen will also support pagination, it's clear that Apple is more and more open towards third-party applications. The 1.1.3 firmware update will also bring the ability to send an SMS message to multiple contacts. Furthermore, Google Maps will have the "My Location" feature, to pinpoint user's location using cell tower triangulation. Also, Google Maps will be able to display the Hybrid map view. And finally, the last known improvement to come with the new update, consists in the fact that web bookmarks can be added to the phone's home screen. We can't know if any other improvements will be ...

Nokia Gaming Phone Has Been Revealed
2008-01-04 14:53:00
Well, by the look of it, there's not much time left till we'll put our hands on one of these devices. Just recently it has been revealed that Nokia registered a strange patent that looks just like the above mentioned 'gaming phone'.The released patent speaks about a 'handheld electronic device' comprising a housing and a retractable handle, the device being arranged to allow the handle to be retracted into the housing along a sliding axis to provide a retracted handle position and extended out of the housing along the sliding axis. Moreover, Nokia's patent looks more like a portable gaming console with camera and phone capabilities. The slim and easy to carry form of the device suggests that it will be an all-in-one device that will definitely make dedicated devices like MP3 players, PSP's, mobile phones or cameras less desirable.More excerpts from the patent: "... is a computer gaming console, input elements 121, 122 being provided for user input by the left hand of a user and ...

Samsung Patents New Keypad Idea
2008-01-04 14:17:00
There are a lot of people who cannot coop up well with the touchscreen displays and the stylus that's attached to most of these phones. That’s not how users expect it should be. Even if the touchscreen is very "trendy", it will never reach the same usability and tactile feedback as any physical keypads. Also, there are people who find it easy to use a QWERTY keypad. But, most of them find it easier than anything else to use the numeric keypad. For this entire situation, Samsung has come up with a brand new idea: a double keypad. Nottoo long ago, we had the Nokia keypad patent that would put in one phone the QWERTY and the numeric keypads, through a slider method.Even the rumored Sony Ericsson model P5i (codename "Bella") will feature a keypad, with a two way slider. Samsung seems to like the idea and came to patent an alternative method for these keypad issues that seem to rule the mobile industry. The mechanism is simple and requires only changing your keypad, instead of your phone. Nokia 3110 Evolve
2008-01-04 07:36:00
Based on an unremarkable and fairly inexpensive handset launched earlier this year, the 3110 Evolve is a basic tri-band GSM phone with a 128 x 160 pixel display, 1.3 megapixel camera, FM stereo radio, microSD expandable memory and an MP3 player, plus Bluetooth and USB connectivity. It's a pretty lightweight handset at 87 grams, but you can tell by the specification that the screen is the 3110 Evolve's biggest weakness. So what makes this different from a standard 3110? Well, Nokia say that there is "bio-sourced material on the covers", and they also say that the cover material is 50% renewable - so we guess that it uses some sort of plant-based hydrocarbon compound rather than plastic from fossil fuels. The Nokia 3110 Evolve comes in a much smaller sales package consisting of 60% recycled content, and there's a new more efficient phone charger. Nokia say that the charger uses "94% less energy than the Energy Star requirements" but does not give any figures comparing it to a standard u ...

Nokia N95 Review
2008-01-04 07:27:00
Nokia's N95 superphone is complicated, taking days for even the most experienced gadget journo to digest. That's why lots of reviews I've seen so far are either extremely light or 10,000 word stunners: This is one of those long ones. It's likely easier to pore over the phone yourself in our hardware and software gallery walkthroughs, and come up with your own opinion. But If you want the text heavy version, here's what's great and terrible about this phone.Aside from call quality, why Nokia's N95 Rocks:1.GPS: The GPS is really GPS, not some assisted-GPS that Sprint and Verizon have in their phones. That means you can really navigate with it, like I did, to streets around SF I wasn't too familiar with. (Specifically, the corner of Washington and Cherry, close to where the Zodiac killer blew away a Cabbie so many years ago.) The point of interest database is sizable and you can search for things by proximity (the nearest ATM or liquor store), and then get the phone dialing right ...
