Talk and Track: GPS Cell Phones
2007-09-14 22:37:00
By: Cecil RushoutThe recent increase in demand for improved 911 emergency calling capabilities has created a new crop of cell phones with GPS tracking technology. Consumer reports note that this leap was actually inspired by the events of 9/11. At that time, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) had released orders that required all cell phone carriers to provide the ability to trace cell phone calls to a location within 100 meters or less. Most cell phone carriers have since integrated GPS technology into their cell phone handsets as a means to conform to these new FCC requirements. This common move is taken as an alternative to overhauling the entire cellular tower network. However, the cell phone GPS tracking in most mobile phones is not like those in your handy GPS receiver which allows you to take hiking in the outdoors. Most cell phones do not even allow the user direct contact to the GPS data. There are also some units that accurate location data is only recorded if an emerg ...

Phone import ban put on hold
2007-09-14 22:10:00
That’s is, the end is nigh. The sky will fall and the four horseman will ride. Who could be responsible for bringing about this armageddon? McDonald’s, of course.Apparently McDonald’s has teamed up with SK Telecom Korea to bring customers a new way to order food, via their mobile phone. Apparently they can utilize RFID technology to allow customers to place their order using a “Touch Order” menu. They’ll be sent a message when their order is ready to be picked up.You’ll still have to stand in line to pay though, right? Nope, you’re charged via your cell phone as well. We still have a little time before the destruction begins. Once McDonald’s partners up with AT&T for a similar venture here in the states you’d better start heading for the hills.Link ...

The warning follows a case at Wick Sheriff Court in which Steven Brodie, 29, from Edinburgh, admitted having unlawful sex with a 13-year-old girl.Brodie met the girl through an internet dating site she accessed on her phone. The girl's mother said the case should act as a warning to parents who thought their children were safe because they did not have a computer at home. During the court hearing, it emerged that Brodie, of Sighthill Gardens in Edinburgh, had spent two nights sleeping with the girl in her bedroom in Caithness, unknown to her mother. Depute fiscal Morag McLintock said the pair met when the girl logged into an internet chat room on her phone last year. Just because children haven't got computers doesn't mean they can't get access to the internet Girl's motherAfter striking up a friendship, Brodie and the girl swapped numbers and began texting each other, exchanging 200 messages between them.At first the girl thought she was talking with a boy of her own age. Smart phone mania
2007-09-08 10:48:00
By John C. DvorakBERKELEY, Calif. (MarketWatch) -- A couple of years back, nobody except Research In Motion Ltd. with its BlackBerry could get much traction with a so-called smart phone. Now, because of the iPhone, everybody's taking another run at the category. It's a blunder. Apple Inc. (AAPL) has dropped the prices for its iPhone, causing consternation among investors since this price cut seemed premature and panicky. It may be an indication that yet another smart phone will meet the fate of the rest of the lot, with just moderate sales. Because customers that shelled out for the iPhone's higher price got so irate, Apple had to offer a $100 rebate to previous buyers. See full story. Still, there is no denying that the iPhone ignited interest in a category that seemed moribund. Just this week, we've heard the following: Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) says that a Zune phone is not out of the question. This phone would combine features of the Zune music player with the capabilities of Micro ...
