GPhone Not a Phone, But A Linux Software Suite: NYT
2007-10-08 04:25:00
By Rafat AliNot necessarily news to regular readers: the so-called Gphone won’t be an actual phone, but a suite of service, or even a new mobile OS. NYT now comes around to it, after speaking to its sources. What it would be is a Linux-based software suite which it is trying to persuade the carriers to use, and then subsidize the service by monetizing it through advertising. Google (NSDQ: GOOG) is not expected to charge phone makers a licensing fee for the software. It could announce the plans this year, and the service could launch next year, the story says. Some major skeptics abound: Arun Sarin, CEO of Vodafone Group (NYSE: VOD), which promotes the Google service on its phones, said it was not clear what compelling functions Google would offer that are not already available. “What is it that is missing in life that they are going to fulfill?” Sarin said. ”It is not a no-brainer. You can reach Google already through a number of devices.”Link ...
New Cell Phone Doubles as Personal Trainer and Shrink
2007-10-08 04:24:00
Fitness-oriented cell phones are nothing new (my old Sony Ericsson w710 had an integrated pedometer that I was addicted to), but NTT DoCoMo's Wellness phone, on display at the CEATEC electronics show in Chiba, Japan, takes things to new heights for the physique-obsessed.Naturally, motion sensors are integrated, but the Wellness doesn't stop at mere steps. It can also calculate how many calories you burn by determining exactly what you're doing when you move: walking, running, or even climbing stairs. And of course you can listen to music through the phone, throughout your workout.Want to see how you're doing, results-wise? Hold the Wellness with both hands and it turns into a body fat calculator. It can take your pulse, too, with a built-in sensor.A built-in breathalyser can also tell you if it's time for Listerine. And if you answer a few questions posed by the phone, it can tell you if you're under heavy stress and offer motivational advice like "Keep your chin up!" Yeah, like ...
Honey, iBricked the New Mobile Phone!
2007-10-08 04:22:00
By Steven LevyNewsweekOct. 15, 2007 issue - It wasn't like Apple didn't warn them. The small but proud number of owners who had "unlocked" their iPhones to work with networks other than AT&T knew that the warranty forbade such hacking. If that weren't enough, Apple sent out a message a couple of weeks ago that couldn't have been more explicit. "Many of the unauthorized iPhone unlocking programs available on the Internet ... will likely result in the modified iPhone becoming permanently inoperable when a future Apple-supplied iPhone software update is installed." Nonetheless, when the ax really fell—Apple released new iPhone software on Sept. 27—those whose updated phones were suddenly "bricked" (rendered no more useful than a ceramic block) were not the only ones who suffered. Apple, that perpetual engine of joyful and radical high-tech disruption, suddenly found itself on the wrong end of a revolution.True, the numbers of people who altered their phones are minuscule compared ...

EU mobile phone charges reduced
2007-09-29 22:42:00
Mobile phone calls within the EU have become cheaper under new limits set by the European Commission. The Commission has established limits on the amount mobile phone companies can charge their customers. Operators can now charge a maximum of around 34 pence a minute for making calls, and 17 pence to receive a call. The move has been welcomed by consumer groups, but some say charges are still too high when using a mobile phone outside the European Union. The new rules do not apply to text messaging nor internet access on a mobile phone. The European Commission says those prices are high, and it hopes operators will lower them voluntarily. BBC correspondent Sumant Bhatia said that in some cases, the new tariffs would be less than half the rate charged by networks earlier this year. And those costs are expected to fall further over the next two years. The European Commissioner in charge of Telecoms, Viviane Reding, also wants to reduce so-called termination charges - the cost of transfer ...

Cell phone distractions
2007-09-29 22:17:00
Common sense would seem to dic tate that driving while talking on a hand-held cell phone or text messaging poses distractions that endanger oneself and others. But since such thinking is in too short of supply, a legislative remedy to this public safety issue is in order. Reps. Josh Shapiro, D-Montgomery, and Eugene DePasquale, D-York, have introduced related bills to ban driving while using hand-held cell phones and place a similar prohibition on text messaging from these devices. Drivers would be permitted to use hands-free cell phones. This isn't the first effort on this front, and previous ones have failed to gain a floor vote. Lawmakers Shapiro and DePasquale are optimistic the time is now right because of Democratic control of the House, the support of Gov. Ed Rendell and rule changes guaranteeing an up or down vote. It would be nice if pleas from law enforcement and traffic safety advocates to pull off the road when using hand-held cell phones were being heeded. But they are no ...

Smart Cell Phone Sony Ericsson W880i
2007-09-29 22:08:00
by EditorsChoiceSony Ericsson W880i has a compact but sharp screen capable of showing 262K colours and 240x320 pixels. Sony Ericsson has made the W880i's keys as tiny slivers, which lack space between them vertically; large fingered people will have problems distinguishing the buttons. Sony Ericsson has abandoned its usual joystick in favour of a four-way nav key that, like the rest of the keypad, is fiddly and prone to accidental presses, mainly due to the closeness of the directional keys to the centre selection button. If your fingers are small, though, you shouldn't have a problem with navigation or typing text messages -- Sony Ericsson's interface remains one of the easiest to use.Flip Sony Ericsson W880i over and you'll find a 2-megapixel camera on the back, but without a flash of any kind. Shortcuts on the side of the W880i are for launching the camera, opening the Walkman music application and adjusting the volume. The proprietary charging and connection port is moved from ...
