Old cell phones have other uses
2007-10-09 03:02:00
By HELOISEAfter purchasing new cell phones, I really hated to toss my old ones, since they are still usable, just outdated. It didn't take me long to figure out how to recycle them. I keep one by my bedside, so if the weather is bad and there's a possibility of power failure, I set the alarm on my cell phone as a backup, just in case. No more worrying about being late for work.I also take along the phone while on vacation to use as an alarm clock. No more oversleeping.B. SMITH, Waynesboro, Pa.And talking about old cell phones, here's a comment from Janet in Houston. She says: "I read the comment from a reader about donating old cell phones. I work for a company in Sugar Land, and our volunteer council collects old cell phones and donates them to the local fire department. The fire department, in turn, gives them to survivors of domestic violence through a local women's shelter."Readers, if you want to donate your phone, contact "Call to Protect" (a program run by the Wireless Found ...

Lost Cell Phone Sparks Airplane Bomb Scare
2007-10-09 02:56:00
by Tim StevensIn case you needed another reason not to forget your cell phone on a flight, we've got a good one for you. Last week a flight was grounded and evacuated at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport after a passenger found an unclaimed cell phone in the pocket of the seat ahead of him. According to an AP report, the phone "appeared to have been taken apart, put back together and shoved into the seat." That was enough to raise the suspicions of the flight crew aboard the Alaska Airlines flight from San Jose. After the pilot was consulted, the plane was ordered to a taxiway in a deserted part of the airport and evacuated. Amazingly, The airport suffered only a 10-minute delay while the plane was searched by police and the FBI. No explosive devices turned up and the cell phone turned out to be just a cell phone.Perhaps fearing air-rage-induced bodily harm, no one has stepped forward yet to claim the offending handset.Link ...
Police find missing woman's cell phone
2007-10-09 02:53:00
By ALAN J. MCCOMBSNew Castle police say they have found the cell phone of Ernestine Mitchell, the 53-year-old New Castle woman who has been missing since Oct. 3. City police said the phone was found Wednesday and was in working condition. They would not say where it was found. Police say they do not suspect foul play in the disappearance of Mitchell, the daughter-in-law of Delaware civil rights activists Littleton Mitchell. Her husband, Philip Mitchell, 50, said his wife of 20 years usually carries her phone with her. “Oh, my gosh, that doesn’t sound good,” Philip Mitchell said. “She always had it with her.” Ernestine Mitchell was last seen walking from her home in the first block of Buttonwood Ave. on Sept. 27. She was walking north on Del. 9 wearing a green shirt and green pants. She told her husband that she was going to take a bus to see her father in Woodland, N.J., but never arrived there, according to police and family. Between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. that day she called her ...

No Cell Phone Use in Flights
2007-10-09 02:48:00
This is not unexpected, and I’m not sure that I don’t disagree with it. The US FAA has shelved any discussion on in flight mobile use for the “Foreseeable Future”. Stating that there was an outcry against mobile phone use meaning there were a lot of people with sense to know that we would be forced to listed to Mr. or Mrs. “I can’t hear so I will talk even louder to compensate” cell phone user. How many times has this happened in a restaurant or other public place where lack of desecration by a cell phone user made life very aggravating! Now picture this on a very tightly confined airplane! I would vote no also. I think WiFi in flight is a much better idea. However, it wouldn’t take long for some knuckle head to Skype. Instant Messaging or emailing from the flight should be sufficient to stay in touch with your work or business. Hopefully this can get accomplished in near future as a compromise.Aviation authorities in the United States have ruled out the use of mobile ...

Sajid’s cell phone blues
2007-10-09 02:34:00
Sajid (of Sajid-Wajid music duo) hasn’t been in the best of moods ever since he lost his cellphone a few weeks back. “My cell phone is much more than a phone for me. I store loads of music and photos in it,” says Sajid. “There are some 25 to 30 compositions which are yet to be polished in the phone. Among them are two songs from what I have composed for ‘Tom and Jerry’ (sequel to ‘Partner’),” he laments. But what’s troubling him the most is that with the phone, he has lost pictures of some very fond moments. “There are photographs of some people who are very close to me, like Salman, Zayed, Govinda and my family,” says Sajid. There were also some pictures he shot in Goa where he had gone recently to perform with some international artists. Apart from all these the phone also has personal numbers of many Bollywood celebrities - if they fall into the wrong hands, it could spell trouble. Sajid believes he left the phone in an autorickshaw he took to go to his gym. ...

Long-term cell users risk brain tumour
2007-10-09 02:33:00
NEW DELHI: Chances of developing a brain tumour doubles for those who are hooked to their mobile phones. This has been found in a study conducted by Swedish scientists, which indicates that an hour a day on a mobile phone for a decade is enough to increase the risk. According to Professor Lennart Hardell of the University Hospital in Orebro and Professor Kjell Hansson Mild of Umea University, long-term mobile users had double the chance of getting a tumour on the side of the brain where they held the handset for over 10 years. The team called for special caution regarding children. They said children should be discouraged from using mobiles because their thinner skulls and developing nervous systems made them especially vulnerable. This finding could come as news for the Indian health ministry which has just embarked on the nation's first long-term government study looking at what excessive mobile phone use can do to people's health. Cell phone use is India has rocketed in the past f ...
Basic Cell Phone Acronyms You Need to Know
2007-10-08 23:57:00
Confused by the alphabet soup of cell phone acronyms? I don't blame you. Here's a cheat sheet that'll help you navigate the waters while your shopping for your next phone—or trying to get the most out of the handset you've got. Most of the confusion arises when it comes to the various types of cell phone networks. For example, when I ask my aunts and uncles which networks their phones work on, they'll usually tell me their carrier instead of whether they're using GSM or CDMA—and frankly, before I started writing about cell phones for a living, I didn't know the difference, either. So first, let's start with a quick overview of the two main standard for cell networks:GSM: Short for Global System for Mobile Communications, GSM is the most widespread standard for cell phones networks in the world. If you're a jetsetter who likes keeping in touch during your far-flung travels, you should go with a GSM-enabled phone, and here in the U.S., AT&T and T-Mobile are both GSM carriers. ...
