New Dustless Bag System With HEPA Air Filtering Unit Offers First Effective Solution to Prevent Sensor Dust On Digital SLRs.
2008-02-08 11:38:00
Rockville, MD January 26, 2008 – Koh Global, has released the patent pending Koh Dustless Bag System that effectively prevents sensor dust on Digital SLR cameras. Finally, a system to prevent the nagging problems of sensor dust in the first place. The System features an 18 gauge clear polyvinyl bag with self-enclosing hand ports. Inside the bag, a HEPA air-filtering unit removes dust and other particulates to create a safe dust-free environment to exchange camera lenses. The versatile bag also functions as a rain cape. The camera sensor is extremely sensitive and functions as the eye of the camera, any and all physical contact with the sensor should be avoided. Francis Koh, co-inventor of the system, believes that sensor swabbing or wiping to remove dust off sensors will be a thing of the past with the Koh Dustless Bag System.Koh Global, AKA, Koh International, Inc., is a new company that specializes in digital photography accessories and specialty electronic equipment. Nikon D3 DSLR camera review
2008-02-08 11:32:00
8 February 2008 - There’s no denying that the Nikon D3 is a lot of camera, sporting a host of advanced features befitting a camera pitched at the top level of professional shooting - it even comes equipped with Live View. And before you ask, yes, it can auto-focus using all of the 51-AF zones available in Live View too.The new CMOS sensor provides a seemingly modest 12.1-megapixel resolution looking a little out of sorts particularly when compared to, say, Canon’s 21-megapixel EOS 1Ds Mk III, with which the D3 will undoubtedly compete, although, it must be remembered the Canon is almost double the price! On the upside it means the pixel pitch will be better than the Canon (that’s bigger pixels to you and me) and means an excellent signal to noise ratio, so noise is all but non-existent.Image processing is controlled by Nikon’s EXPEED image engine and as with the recently tested D300, it works very well indeed, allowing the camera’s amazing ISO range of 100 to 25,600 to becom ...

British photographer Tim Hetherington wins premier award
2008-02-08 10:23:00
The international jury of the 51st annual World Press Photo Contest selected a colour image of the UK photographer Tim Hetherington as World Press Photo of the Year 2007. The picture was taken 16 September 2007 and shows a US soldier resting at Restrepo bunker, named after a soldier from his platoon who was recently killed by insurgents. The 2nd Battalion Airborne of the 503rd US infantry is undergoing a deployment in the Korengal Valley in the Eastern province of Afghanistan. The valley is infamous as the site of downing of a US helicopter and has seen some of the most intense fighting in the country. Hetherington's photograph is part of a picture story that was also awarded 2nd Prize in General News Stories. He had traveled to Afghanistan on assignment for Vanity Fair."This image shows the exhaustion of a man - and the exhaustion of a nation," says jury chairman Gary Knight, and adds "We're all connected to this. Shooting tethered with the Canon EOS 1Ds MkIII
2008-02-08 09:36:00
The excitement of getting hold of a new camera can often be tempered by the frustrations encountered when having to learn how to work with a new piece of kit. First off I must say that I have so far been delighted with the EOS 1Ds MkIII camera in terms of the camera’s design and image quality. Canon have made a number of significant improvements that are very welcome. Although there have been some teething problems, the good news is that I have managed to overcome most of these. The main one though has been trying to get the Canon camera to work smoothly with the new Intel 24? iMac that I bought at the same time as the camera, which has also proved difficult to set up in the studio, but more of that later.Working in tethered mode with the EOS 1Ds MkIIIIf you have been accustomed to working with the EOS Viewer Utility with EOS Capture (as described in my previous article on tethered shooting with Lightroom)then you are going to have to change to the newer EOS Utility that is designe ...
Q&A: Canon's camera tech guru Chuck Westfall
2008-02-08 09:20:00
LAS VEGAS--Two's company, three's a crowd, and Canon's Chuck Westfall is a lot less lonely these days.Canon once was the sole camera company offering a digital SLR whose sensor is the size of a full frame of 35mm film, a technology that can increase the performance advantage and price penalty that SLR cameras already have compared with compact cameras. In November, though, Nikon began selling its full-frame rival, the D3, and last week Sony said it will launch its own full-frame competitor by the end of 2008. Westfall is a camera tech guru and the technical adviser for Canon USA's professional products marketing division. In his 25 years at Canon, he's amassed an encyclopedic knowledge not only of official camera specs but also deeply buried engineering details.Westfall shared his opinions about the full-frame market and other camera trends during the Photo Marketing Association trade show here. He also discussed fuel cells to replace batteries, flash memory technology, OLED displ ...

Digital Camera Market Heats Up
2008-02-07 08:22:00
It may be the easiest $700 sale retailers make this year: Americans are hot for D-SLR cameras and manufacturers exhibiting at PMA this week in Las Vegas are introducing lower-costing, higher-performing consumer models to meet the demand.Canon’s upgrading its top-selling entry-level D-SLR, the Rebel XTi, with the new 12.2 megapixel XSi, due out in April at $799. Nikon’s in the game with the D60, a consumer D-SLR with onboard editing and a “Stop Motion Movie” feature, launching this month for $750. Sony, Samsung, Pentax and Olympus have sub-$1000 contenders too. “We’re seeing very powerful products and great prices,” says Nikon’s Senior Technical Manager, Steve Heiner. “These products don’t sit on shelves.”Indeed, shipments and sales of D-SLR’s outpaced most analyst predictions in 2007. According to a new CIPA (Camera & Imaging Products Associations) report, 7.5 million D-SLR’s shipped in 2007 and over 9 million are expected to go out in ‘08, an increase of 22 ...

Sony set to challenge in pro DSLR arena
2008-02-07 08:11:00
Eighteen months after launching its first digital SLR system, Sony says it is preparing to take on Canon and Nikon with a pro camera. The as-yet unnamed Alpha camera will feature a 24.6 million pixel full-frame CMOS image sensor, dubbed 'Exmor', designed by Sony and fitted with its Super SteadyShot technology.A prototype of the camera was officially presented at last week's PMA show in Las Vegas, and is expected in UK stores by the end of the year, possibly making its debut at the Photokina trade show in Cologne this autumn. To complement the new flagship camera, Sony is also developing an optional vertical grip and a pro flash gun.A day prior to the announcement, Sony has sent out a briefing about a new 35mm full-size CMOS sensor with 24.81 effective million pixels, and a high signal conversion speed. The sensor utilises Sony's column-parallel A/D conversion technology, which provides each column within the sensor with its own A/D converter, effectively reducing image degradation du ...

Lens Test: Tamron 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 XR Di VC AF
2008-02-07 07:43:00
Add image stabilization to ultrazoom reach and remarkable sharpness. What do you get? A bargain. The fourth version of Tamron's popular 10.7X superzoom since 1999, this 28-300mm ($600, street) is the first Tamron to offer image stabilization. Called "VC" for "Vibration Compensation," the system is the industry's first to use a three-coil design (up from the usual two) that theoretically can compensate for vertical, horizontal, and diagonal shake.A full-frame lens that scales up to a 43-465mm on most DSLRs, it has been internally coated to suppress ghosting and flare off digital sensors. Like most superzooms, it's targeted toward amateurs, so we tested it on both the Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi, with an APS-sized sensor, and the full-frame EOS 5D.Packed with specialized optics, the lens has hybrid and molded glass aspheric elements, plus low- and anomalous-dispersion glass to control chromatic aberration. All this helped Tamron make the lightest, closest focusing, and most favorably p ...
Nikon D60 Review
2008-02-07 07:41:00
Feb. 7 (Bloomberg) -- The camera you carry can almost define your personality. Are you an avid shooter or a casual shutterbug? If you're somewhere in between, go for an entry-level digital single-lens reflex camera. It combines professional-level features, such as fairly fast shooting speed, great picture quality and a good deal of creative control, with the relative simplicity of a point-and-shoot camera. It's the kind of camera that can grow with you. One option is the new D60 from Tokyo-based Nikon Corp.Nikon's D60, introduced last week, joins an expanding market of entry-level digital SLRs, competing with Canon Inc.'s EOS Rebel series, Sony Corp.'s new A200 and others. The D60, at $749 including a zoom lens, will replace the D40x in Nikon's product line, landing it between the less-expensive D40 and the pricier D80 model. The D60 features a 10-megapixel image sensor, built-in flash, a SecureDigital card slot, a rechargeable battery with a charger and the usual ports, USB and vi ...
Sony Alpha 200 Review
2008-02-07 07:18:00
Sony A200 - Entry-level digital SLR cameraWith the introduction of the Alpha 100, Sony entered the DSLR market. This model has now been replaced by the new Sony Alpha 200. The new Alpha camera is Sony's entry-level model and offers a stack of setting possibilities for a very attractive price. When we look back at the moment the Alpha 100 got introduced, and after that the Alpha 700 with on top of that Sony's promise to introduce a professional DSLR in 2008, and we look at the A200 now, we can say that Sony are definitely branding their name on the DSLR market.Sony Alpha 200 - 10 Megapixel resolutionThe lens range is also enhanced time after time which makes the Alpha package very complete. The Sony Alpha 200 is an entry-level model but with serious intentions. It is a tool for those photographers that like to take their shooting skills to a higher level and grow to a higher segment. The resolution suffices for all-round photography and for editing pictures or making crops.Sony A200 S ...
