Sony DSLR-A700 Review
2008-01-16 11:41:00
IntroductionThe Sony A700 is the second DSLR camera from Sony, a more complex model than the original A100 that is aimed at the prosumer photographer. The Sony A700 bears more than a passing resemblance to the Konica Minolta Maxxum / Dynax 7D DSLR, which is perhaps no surprise given that Sony effectively inherited Konica Minolta's camera business a couple of years ago. The list of brand new features is certainly impressive. There's a 12.24 megapixel CMOS sensor, replacing the 10 megapixel CCD sensor of the A100, a 11 point autofocus system, extensive ISO range of 100-6400, 5fps continuous shooting (up to 17 shots in RAW mode), a fantastic, high resolution 3 inch LCD screen, magnesium body with dust/moisture resistant seals and a fastest shutter speed of 1/8000th. The A700 builds on the existing Maxxum / Dynax lens mount with the re-christened Alpha mount, with the majority of Konica Minolta lenses being supported. As with the A100, the new A700 incorporates several Konica Minolta tec ...

IR Photo Filter Allows Infrared Photography with the Mamiya ZD Digital Back
2008-01-16 11:20:00
Elmsford NY, January 10, 2008 — Mamiya has announced the release of an IR Photo filter for the Mamiya ZD Digital back."Today‘s CCD sensors are highly sensitive to infrared light," said Jeff Karp, Mamiya Product Marketing Manager, "and the IR Cut filter built into cameras reduces infrared light transmission. The result is more accurate and natural color. The IR Cut filter, however, makes infrared photography impossible. In response to the large number of requests from infrared photographers, especially with the scarcity of infrared film, this filter was created."Mamiya developed the IR Photo Filter for use on the Mamiya ZD Digital Back. The IR Photo Filter YD401 (which replaces the standard IR Cut Filter) is a clear filter that allows the transmission of infrared light as well as visible light rays."Unlike specialized IR cameras or modified systems," states Karp, "the Mamiya ZD Digital Back can be transformed from standard digital to IR digital, simply by changing the user-replaceab ...
Mamiya introduces Lens Adapters for Hasselblad Lenses
2008-01-16 11:19:00
Elmsford NY, January 10, 2008 — Mamiya has announced the release of two Mamiya Lens Mount Adapters that allows the use of Hasselblad V-series medium format lenses on Mamiya 645AF series cameras (645AF, 645AFD, and 645AFD II)."The adapters provide the mechanical interface and precise flange-to-film plane distance required for proper focusing of Hasselblad lenses," said Jeff Karp, Mamiya Product Marketing Manager, "allowing the photographer to use their existing Hasselblad V series lenses on the high-precision Mamiya 645AFD II. We are confident that photographers are looking to make the transition from film to digital as efficiently as possible, and this adapter is definitely a way to do that."To use the lenses, simply focus with the lens wide open (the camera provides focus confirmation assistance), then stop-down for proper exposure meter readings. The 645AF/AFD/AFD II can use shutter priority, aperture priority or manual metering modes. The adapters come in black (#404) or silver (# ...
Mamiya Upgrades the Mamiya Macro MF 120mm F4 Lens
2008-01-16 11:18:00
Elmsford NY, January 10, 2008 — Mamiya has introduced the new Mamiya Sekor Macro MF 120mm f/4 D Lens — successor to the popular Mamiya Macro MF 120mm f/4 Lens."The Mamiya 120mm f/4 macro lens is one of the sharpest lenses available today," said Jeff Karp, Mamiya Product Marketing Manager, "and it has already been critically corrected for digital imaging. But it needed an upgrade to be fully compatible with the latest cameras, software and digital backs."The primary upgrade of the new lens is related to digital communication with the camera. Data transfer is now controlled by a 16-bit CPU instead of the previous 4-bit CPU.The advantages of the new CPU are:Rewritability: The new 16-bit CPU is rewritable and can be overwritten with firmware upgrades that would be required for compatibility with future cameras and digital backs.Finer Lens Correction: Thanks to the bigger capacity of the CPU, the new lens has more lens data. It is possible to apply finer lens-characteristic corrections ...
Sony Alpha A700 Review
2008-01-16 03:03:00
When Sony introduced the A100 in June 2006, the company made a commitment to develop the Alpha system to include a full line of products. Since then, many Sony and Carl Zeiss ZA T* series lenses have been released, and now, the second camera is available. (A third D-SLR, targeting professionals, will be announced in 2008.) The new A700 maintains compatibility with Maxxum as well as Sony AF lenses, but this new 12-megapixel Alpha model is entirely different than the A100 in most other respects. A “prosumer”-level model, it provides superior resolution, versatility, and performance as I discovered while shooting over a thousand images.Design And FeaturesA rugged, weather-resistant D-SLR with an aluminum chassis, magnesium body, and carbon-fiber shutter, the A700 is a mid-size camera with a contoured grip that seems just right for small or large hands. Sony also markets an optional VG-C70AM battery grip that accepts one or two of the lithium batteries. This accessory is equipped with ...

Lab Report: Nikon D3 takes noise award
2008-01-16 02:46:00
How do you beat the 2007 Camera of the Year at its own game? Drop two zeros off its name and double its price -- and you get the Nikon D3 pro DSLR, (street: $5000.00) with a full-frame sensor, super-tough body, and faster burst rate. There's more to it than that, and we're still running a production model of the D3 through our gauntlet of tests in the Pop Photo Lab. But we can give you a peek at one of the D3's most outstanding feature: low noise at high ISOs.Even at ISO 200, the added light-gathering capability of the larger pixels on the D3's 12.1MP full-frame sensor beats the D300's 12.3MP APS-sized sensor. Shooting RAW takes full advantage of the D3's lower noise and 14-bits-per-color capture. And it gives you much more flexibility, especially when using the trial version of Capture NX 1.3 software (included with the camera) to convert NEF RAW to 16-bit TIFF files.Capture NX's exposure and noise reduction controls let you strike a balance between resolution and noise, depend ...
Pentax K20D sample images from Dubai
2008-01-16 02:37:00
The Pentax K20D is not a rumor any more. The first sample images from Pentax K20D 14,6 megapixel digital slr, have turned up at the pentaxforums.com and managed to block server access for a while. The following are but a couple of the images posted at pentaxforums.com. Credit to forum member Matjazz.Clearly, the Pentax K20D dslr has the capability, even before it is announced, to stir quite a bit of excitement. Although the body is basically the same as the K10D, more or less all of the insides are new.Pentax Japan has also officially on the Japanese site announced the date for new product announcements as January 25.Mikemore : stock-photo ...
Nikon D300 DSLR camera Review
2008-01-16 02:11:00
The D300’s new higher resolution sensor means Nikon has had to develop a new processing engine called Expeed that chews through the camera’s 16-bit files that are downsampled to 12 or 14-bit NEF RAWs or 8-bit TIFF or JPEG files. The boost in resolution of the new CMOS sensor and its extra 2-megaipxel’s of resolution might seem a risky strategy if it has adversely affected the image quality. So lets have a look over the new camera and those images. Some of the new kit includes a faster frame capture rate in continuous shooting jumping rather modestly from five to six frames per second and 8-fps but disappointingly only using the optional battery grip. The camera has a very nice 3-inch, 920k-pixel screen that is bright, sharp, and very easy to use and includes Live View technology that includes two modes with AF possible in both of them. Nikon’s D-Lighting system is also built-in as is Active D-Lighting (in three modes of low, normal and high) that helps sort differences between sh ...
Canon lowers DSLR camera price
2008-01-15 03:03:00
Canon has lowered the retail price in Taiwan for its EOS 400D, an entry-level DSLR (digital single-lens reflex) camera, with the price of camera body alone dropping by 10.9% from NT$22,900 to NT$20,400 (US$629) and that of body plus EF-S 18-55mm lens kit from NT$25,900 to NT$23,400, according to Canon Marketing (Taiwan). The price for the EOS 400D plus the 18-55mm lens kit is 6% lower than the NT$24,900 charged for Nikon's entry-level DSLR camera, the D40X, implying that Canon is attempting to compete with Nikon in Taiwan, retail channels pointed out.In addition, Canon has also offered a discount price of NT$28,300 for double lens kits, that is, an EOS 400D camera body together with a EF-S 18-55mm lens kit and a 55-250mm telescopic lens kit, Canon Taiwan indicated. Tips on Photographing Birds in Flight.
2008-01-15 02:58:00
1. The problem of stabilityStability starts, not with your camera, but with your feet and legs. As bipeds, humans are inherently unstable, any movement of our arms and/or shoulders is immediately compensated for by a complex series of lower body adjustments, all of which contribute to camera and lens movement. You can only be moderately successful shooting while standing and when it is windy you might as well forget it entirely. The answer is to sit on a chair or on a stool with three legs. No one wants to drag around a four-legged canvas chair and they are not stable on rough terrain. There are a number of three-legged stools available but most are not suitable. Rough terrain and the necessity of supporting a heavy body that will twist and lean to one side or the other precludes most of the lightweight camping stools or massage stools I have see advertised. The solution: for several years I have used a Swedish Walk-Stool which is very strong, easily collapsible, portable and comfortable ...

How to Make A Inexpensive Light Tent
2008-01-15 02:29:00
The following tutorial on constructing an Inexpensive Light Tent was Submitted by Jeffrey Bail over at our Forums. I thought it was well worth highlighting here on the main blog too! See Jeffrey’s Flickr Account here.If you’re like me, you don’t want to spend money if you can do it yourself and yield the same results. One day I was at my local photography store I saw one of these “Pop-Up” light tents. It consisted of a collapsible white fabric box with a hole in the front and 3 lights - used for photographing small objects in photographic studios (like the shot of the chocolate reindeer to the left).I was going to purchase it until I saw the $100 price tag. No way I am going to spend $100 on some fabric and 3 lights when the material costs far less. So I set off and built one of these light tents and it did not come out bad at all. more : digital-photography-school ...
