Ultimate Image Quality
2008-01-20 08:44:00
The two major goals to achieving ultimate image quality are image sharpness and ecstatic exposure. “Ecstatic exposure” means you get such a good exposure--one that reveals the widest possible breadth of detail from shadow to highlight--that you are ecstatic over the result. You’re ecstatic because with a good exposure you greatly increase your creative adjustment possibilities and minimize the tiresome and time-consuming software manipulations required to repair a poor exposure. In my recently published book, The Complete Guide to Ultimate Digital Photography, I address in great detail the principles needed to achieve these goals. In this three-part series, we’ll review those principles and show you how to implement them, but in somewhat less detail. By following the principles in each part, you can greatly improve your pictures. By following them all, you can reach, maybe even achieve, the cusp of ultimate image quality. Both understanding and enacting the principles are fairly ...

Going Ultrawide with the Olympus E-3
2008-01-20 08:26:00
The Olympus Zuiko 7-14mm f/4.0 lens takes it all in!We weren't content to get our hands on the Olympus Zuiko 300mm f/2.8 and EC-20 2x tele converter along with the new Olympus E-3 (see related story). We also wanted to go to the opposite extreme and check out one of the widest rectilinear Four Thirds lenses, the Olympus Zuiko 7-14mm f/4.0. Remember, there's a 2x factor with Four Thirds cameras, so this is equivalent to a 14-28mm f/4 on a full-frame SLR. At the wide end, that's a 14mm equivalency, which covers an exceptionally wide 113 degrees. It's an f/4, which is a little slower than some of its competitor's 14mm offerings, but due to the in-camera stabilization, you won't really miss that stop all that often.Jack Howard more : popphoto ...

Extreme Reach with the Olympus E-3
2008-01-20 08:24:00
Combine the Four-Thirds camera's 2x lens factor and the EC-20 2x teleconverter with the Zuiko 300mm f/2.8 for a hand-holdable, ultra-portable, Image stabilized 1200mm f/5.6 equivalent lens!Among many a photographer the sensor factor is considered a bad thing. Usually these complaints focus on the wide end of things, where the smaller sensors make wide angle lenses less wide (see related story). But at the telephoto end, it's a different story. A smaller sensor means more effective reach. And among DSLRs, nowhere is this gain more realized than on the 2x factor Four Thirds system. So, when the Olympus Zuiko 300mm f/2.8 Super Telephoto lens ($5895, street) is mounted on the Olympus E-3, it becomes, in effect, a 600mm f/2.8. Add in the Olympus Zuiko EC-20 2x teleconverter ($479, street), and you've got an effective 1200mm f/5.6 (EXIF data indicates an actual f/5.7 aperture, but this is a negligible difference) sensor-shift stabilized supertelephoto lens that weights just over eight poun ...

Camera Review: Diana+
2008-01-20 08:22:00
The Lomographic Society revives a plastic classic and adds some new features. The black and robin's-egg-blue Diana of the '60s and '70s is back -- with some major upgrades as the Lomographic Society's Diana+ (direct: $50). It's now packing heaps of megapixels (with a 120-capable film scanner -- not included!), a 33% increase in apertures on its 75mm lens (it now goes to f/gazillion, aka "pinhole"), and a built-in frictional torque Image Stabilization system (otherwise known as a tripod socket).Yes, we're talking about a 120-film based chintzy plastic camera with a plastic lens that's fully manual. No CIPA battery life rating here -- there's no battery! Burst rate? As quick as you can crank the winder -- but don't do it too fast or you might break something! Jack Howard more : popphoto ...

The Nikon D2X: A Review Three Years Too Late
2008-01-20 08:16:00
A few of the many questions that you may be asking as you read this review is “Why the D2x? Why now? Why even bother?” I’m not going to lie: I was set on buying the D300 when I thought about casually browsing that famous auction site for the prices of the D2X and its slightly improved sibling, the D2Xs. Lo, and behold! I found auctions ending with prices lower than a new D300!Then I realized that I need to reevaluate if I really need the new features of the D300. As you read through the review, I would be outlining my frustrations with the D200 and as you get to the end, choosing the D2X over the D300 may make sense… Or maybe not. At the least, you’ll be entertained…Or maybe not.more : subtleimages ...

Panasonic L10 review
2008-01-20 08:07:00
Panasonic L10 review : Panasonic carefully made a start with their first digital SLR camera. The L1 was mainly meant to gain some experience in this class and to establish a name as DSLR supplier. No high production figures were expected and the L1 found itself in the top segment straight away. The second digital SLR camera Panasonic introduced, the L10, is a lot less modest. The appearance might have become more conservative, but that is only the cover of what may be looked upon as a real revolution. Panasonic is redefining the DSLR with the Lumix L10. At the time the L1 got introduced, together with the Olympus E-330, we were somewhat scornful about the Live View function. • Read our complete Panasonic L10 review!Dennis Hissink more : letsgodigital ...

Panasonic Lumix DMC L10: Review
2008-01-19 12:45:00
It may look much like any other DSLR in its class, but where the L10 really differs is with its snazzy 2.5” free-swivel LCD screen. In a word, that is the sell point. Stack that up with Live View and the result is instantly quirky and fun, yet simultaneously professional and useable. Of course, both these features are now sported by the Olympus E-3, and this makes us wonder if the swivel LCD will prove as much of a 'must have' as Live View has become of late.Multiple shooting functions lead the 10megapixel Panasonic DMC-L10 to be more akin to the company's 'Intelligent Auto' compacts of late - instantly useable, but maintaining those manual options as you come to expect from a DSLR.There's a quick access “film type” menu that's quick and easy to toggle through, and the now compulsory Supersonic Wave Filter system for blasting the dust from the sensor each time you power down.Panasonic have gone down the Four Thirds route - the only existing universal DSLR format, where len ...

Bibble 4.9 Pro RAW Conversion Software Review
2008-01-19 12:05:00
Bibble Pro 4.9 is the latest professional photo workflow and RAW file conversion software from imaging technology company Bibble Labs. Marketed to the advanced amateur and professional photography sectors, Bibble offers a lot of flexibility and image processing control not seen in some other RAW file conversion packages. Its range of features and limited hand holding would easily overwhelm casual photographers just beginning to dabble in shooting RAW, but for serious amateur shooters Bibble Pro – available directly from the manufacturer in the full version for $129.95 – offers impressive bang for your buck and some conversion tools you simply can't get anywhere else.Offering much of the same functionality as Adobe's more well-known Lightroom package, Bibble Pro focuses heavily on its RAW conversion capabilities, but is equally at home working in a JPEG environment. Even in its Lite form (which strips away some of the features – tethered shooting support, for instance – that o ...
