Lens Test: Tamron 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 XR Di VC AF
2008-01-26 08:06:00
Add image stabilization to ultrazoom reach and remarkable sharpness. What do you get? A bargain. The fourth version of Tamron's popular 10.7X superzoom since 1999, this 28-300mm ($600, street) is the first Tamron to offer image stabilization. Called "VC" for "Vibration Compensation," the system is the industry's first to use a three-coil design (up from the usual two) that theoretically can compensate for vertical, horizontal, and diagonal shake.A full-frame lens that scales up to a 43-465mm on most DSLRs, it has been internally coated to suppress ghosting and flare off digital sensors. Like most superzooms, it's targeted toward amateurs, so we tested it on both the Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi, with an APS-sized sensor, and the full-frame EOS 5D.Packed with specialized optics, the lens has hybrid and molded glass aspheric elements, plus low- and anomalous-dispersion glass to control chromatic aberration. All this helped Tamron make the lightest, closest focusing, and most favorably p ...

Lens Test: Olympus Zuiko Digital 12-60mm f/2.8-4 SWD AF
2008-01-26 08:01:00
This 24-120mm equivalent zoom challenges Leica for super sharpness with almost no distortion.Introduced with the Olympus E-3, this 24-120mm equivalent is the first Zuiko lens available in the U.S. that incorporates the company's Supersonic Wave Drive (SWD) autofocus motor. Similar in concept to the USM and SWM motors from Canon and Nikon respectively, this system has not one but two motors, which Olympus claims produces the world's fastest autofocusing when used on the E-3. How? The two motors are mounted in opposition to each other, a design that the company claims will produce quicker AF startups and stops, as well as increased accuracy. (For more on AF speeds, see the camera test.)HANDS ON: This is a hefty piece of glass. By way of comparison, its closest competitor is probably the Leica 14-50mm f/2.8-3.5 Four Thirds zoom for Panasonic's Lumix DMC-L1. The two have almost the identical length contracted, but the Oly extends a considerable 1.5 inches further when zoomed out. It's ...

First Look: Pentax K20D
2008-01-24 15:39:00
Pentax's new flagship SLR is exactly like the K10D, but different in so many wonderful ways. You'd be forgiven for mistaking the brand-new 14.6 megapixel Pentax K20D (estimated street: $1,299) for its predecessor, the 10.2 megapixel Pentax K10D (current street: $700) at a quick first glance. Yes, the size and weight are nearly identical, to the point where the vertical shutter and battery grip comes forward with no changes or upgrades. There's the same weather-tough gasketing inside, and of course, there's a sensor-shift stabilization system in the newest top of the line Pentax SLR, and Pentax claims it is even more responsive to camera movement. The 11-point AF array and pattern are unchanged, as is the overall shooting feeling of the K20D. But a K10D this is not! For starters there is a bigger ultrawide viewing angle (160°) 2.7 inch 230,000 dot LCD with Live View via mirror flip-up (with black-out autofocus). Then there's the innovative mirrored-output dust data display for stub ...

Pentax K20D DSLR Digital SLR Review
2008-01-24 14:28:00
Pentax K20D First look Review - In mid January, it's good to get in the sun, so when Pentax took Matt Grayson to the burning desert to test their new DSLR, he packed his SPF50 with glee. It's just a shame it was cloudy and raining all the time. After the success of the mid-range K10D, Pentax release the successor to the Company's flagship. The K20D is physically the same, but with a monstrous 14Mp CMOS sensor, Live view and an improved Shake reduction system. One of the main features of the K20D is its robustness and in particular the dust protection. So it seemed fitting to test the model out in the desert. Luckily, they didn't leave us there.Pentax K20D SpecificationResolution: 14.6 Mp CMOS with Primary colour filterImage size: 4672 x 3120 JPEG, 4688 x 3120 RAWMetering: 16 segment TTL aperture metering, Multi-field, Spot, Centre weightedFormat: JPEG, RAW PEF, RAW DNGMemory: SD/SDHCMonitor: 2.7in Polysilicon TFT LCDShutter: 1/4000 sec - 30sec plus BulbViewfinder: Pentaprism viewfi ...
