Live View Photography with the Canon EOS 40D - PopPhoto
2007-10-15 07:12:00
We'll admit it. It took us some time to warm up to the idea of "Live View" functions on DSLRs. No more! Now that we've spent some time in the studio with the Canon EOS 40D and its Live View capabilities, we're sold on its uses in the studio and other controlled situations.Sure, there are times in the field when Live View on the camera's LCD may come in handy for low or high-angle framing, but the real strength of Live View is in the studio, when the 40D is tethered to a computer and the view is displayed on your monitor via a camera control utility.Mirroring the display to a computer monitor via the extra-long, shielded USB cord that ships with the 40D affords the studio shooter several real advantages:For more information : popphoto ...
Review : Canon 17-55mm f/2.8 EF-S IS USM
2007-10-15 07:05:00
This digital-only, 27-88mm equivalent ($1,000, street) is a pro-caliber upgrade of Canon's popular 17-85mm amateur Image Stabilizer lens ($515, street). It has the hallmarks of Canon's professional, full-frame L-series (solid construction, aspheric elements, UD glass). But it couldn't be labeled "L" because it won't work on all EOS bodies.HANDS ON: About an inch longer and half a pound heavier than comparable Sigma and Tamron high-speed digital-only zooms, it has a solid feel, with smooth-turning zoom and focusing rings. AF action is fast, accurate, and -- thanks to the Ultrasonic Motor -- almost silent.Julia Silbermore : popphoto ...

A look inside Nikon's Sendai digital SLR factory
2007-10-14 15:45:00
In August 2007, Nikon invited technology journalists from around the globe - including us - to take part in the D3 and D300 launch announcements in Tokyo, as well as tour the company's Sendai, Japan manufacturing facility where the D3 is being built. At the time, D3 bodies were being assembled at a rate of about 400 per day , but this was expected to grow to about 600 per day in September 2007 for a planned ongoing production of 12,000 units per month. A D3 is comprised of about 2000 individual components.Nikon's Sendai factory opened in 1971 and employs over 1100 full-time and temporary workers. In addition to the D3, Sendai has produced the D2Xs, D2X, D2Hs, D2H, D100, D1X, D1H and D1. Except at the busiest times, Sendai runs a single eight-hour shift per day.Rob GalbraithFor more information : robgalbraith ...

DSLR cameras are not worth making, says Kodak
2007-10-13 16:42:00
Kodak will not rule out future entry into the consumer digital SLR arena. But the company admits that it has so far stayed out of this market because it does not make the lenses necessary to make enough profit.Eastman Kodak vice president John O'Grady told Amateur Photographer (AP) that the firm thought long and hard about making a consumer DSLR but explained that it is in a different position to companies such as Nikon and Canon which make their own lensesChris CheesmanFor more information : amateurphotographer ...
Review : Olympus E-510 - Good Gear Guide
2007-10-13 16:38:00
Olympus is a relatively new company to the SLR space, but it is fast gaining a reputation for differentiating themselves by packing unique technologies into its models. Its latest unit and flagship model in the consumer range, the E-510, is no exception. It offers live view and dust reduction along with a 10-megapixel sensor and sensor-based image stabilisation. While it may not quite offer the same image quality as some competing models, the feature set should attract some buyers.Pictures captured by this model were fairly good, but not quite up to the standards of competing units from Canon and Nikon. They tended towards the soft side and while this isn't noticeable, in most prints if you're making big enlargements it may be problematic. Our Imatest testing software confirmed this, giving the E-510 a score of 1547 for sharpness, which is a little low, but understandable considering it also found 23.5 per cent under-sharpening.Chromatic aberration wasn't an issue, with very little ...
Sony Alpha DSLR-A700 - CNET editors' review
2007-10-13 16:25:00
The good: Exceptionally streamlined, comfortable shooting design; broad, functional feature set, including sensor-shift image stabilizer; excellent photo quality; generally fast performance. The bad: A few design quirks; proprietary hot shoe. The bottom line: A top-of-the-line amateur digital SLR camera, the Sony Alpha DSLR-A700 will delight Konica Minolta diehards and makes a great choice if you don't already have a stake in other lens systems. Reviewed by: Lori GruninI know Sony's older, entry-level Alpha DSLR-A100 has its share of fans, but I never got a chance to shoot with it, which made the 12-megapixel Alpha DSLR-A700 my introduction to Sony's take on dSLRs. And I soon found that the unprepossessing, very un-Sony-like design camouflages a sophisticated dSLR that's enjoyable to shoot and can hold its own quite well against models from veteran camera manufacturers such as Canon and Nikon. True, much of the DNA for Sony's dSLRs comes from the company's acquisition of deceased ...
