Review: Tokina AT-X M100 Pro D lens - smh
2007-10-21 09:34:00
Tokina AT-X M100 Pro D lensPrice: $800A good lens but . . .Low-down This is a 100 mm f2.8 macro prime lens. The unit tested came in a Canon mount and was used with the new Canon EOS 40D. Construction quality is excellent with a crinkle-finished barrel similar to the finish on some Nikkor lenses. In macro mode, the inner lens barrel extends about 5 cm and there is no wobble. Switching from auto to manual focus is simply a matter of pulling back on the focus ring to engage manual mode. There is the usual limiter switch to stop the lens hunting for focus through its entire range when it is in either macro or normal mode. A lens hood is supplied but is hardly necessary because the front optical element is already well recessed in the lens body. This lens works on both digital and film cameras. It doesn't have its own focus motor so it cannot be used as an auto-focus lens with Nikon D40/40X bodies. The manual focus control is smooth and well damped.more : smh ...

Olympus ME-1 Magnifier Eyecup review
2007-10-20 08:00:00
If you have difficulty in resolving the focusing screen in your E-System viewfinder, the Olympus ME-1 magnifier eyecup could be the solutionTypical price: US$39, UK£35, EU€47One aspect shared by the majority of DSLR cameras, and Four Thirds is no exception, is that the through-the-lens viewfinder experience isn't as big and bold as with 'full frame' 35mm film SLRs of old. On a Four Thirds camera this is because the lens projects an image circle just half the width a 35mm film. To preserve the brightness of the view through the reflex system, the apparent size of the viewfinder frame is limited.Ian Burleymore : fourthirds-user ...

Lowepro Cirrus TLZ 25 - CNET editors' review
2007-10-20 07:35:00
The holster design has been a staple of camera bags for a long time. Lowepro's Cirrus line is a new take on the holster design. If you're not familiar with the holster-type camera bag, it's based on a triangular shape, tapering toward the bottom, and holds an SLR or SLR-type camera, typically with a small zoom lens. There's not too much you can do to update this idea, but you have to hand it to Lowepro, since they do a great job of modifying simple things and giving them a classy contemporary look. One great example of this is the Cirrus TLZ 25's handle, which carves a cute curve over the top of the bag, while its gray color provides a counterpoint to the bag's otherwise mostly black color scheme. The bag has another splash of gray in the band that sits below the bag's top flap. Part of the gray band forms the top of the small front pouch, which has a tab of Velcro behind the Lowepro logo to keep it closed. This pouch doesn't seem very large, but it's bigger than it seems and c ...

Choosing Digital Camera Filters
2007-10-19 14:04:00
Filters are those glass or gelatin disks or squares that are affixed to the front of your camera's lens, changing the light that passes through the lens in some way. Filters were really popular before the advent of digital photography because some of the effects you could get with them weren't possible (or easy) to achieve in the darkroom. Glass and gelatin filters are less used today among casual photographers because you can achieve many of the effects they provide within Photoshop or other photo editing software. Yet, not all filtration effects are possible in the digital darkroom. Here's a description of the most essential filter add-ons: Infrared : Many digital SLR (single lens reflex) cameras are capable of taking photographs by using only infrared illumination, which produces a spectacular effect outdoors. You can get dark skies, vivid clouds, and ghostly white trees in your landscape shots and strange, pale complexions with your photographs of ...
