Sony Alpha 700 Digital SLR test
2007-10-27 02:27:00
ALPHA MALE? At last Sony has two DSLR cameras, but is the Alpha 700 good enough to convince photographers to switch their allegiance? Angela Nicholson finds outAs the first camera to be launched after the Sony takeover of Konica Minolta, the Sony Alpha 100 arrived under a heavy weight of expectation. Sony had already made it clear that as well as satisfying the requirements of existing Dynax system users, it aimed to win new customers and woo photographers away from other manufacturers. It aims to take the number two slot in DSLR sales and achieve a 25% share of the market. Although it was supported by a collection of compatible accessories, the Alpha 100 was the sole representative of Sony's DSLR market ambitions. Many enthusiast photographers like to invest in a camera that sits within a range, so this was a bit of a handicap. Having a series of cameras underlines a manufacturer's commitment to a system, and it means there are second-body or upgrade options available. Sony has trie ...

Pentax to Delay Camera Launch after Supplier Fire
2007-10-25 20:51:00
TOKYO (Reuters) - Pentax Corp said it would delay the launch of its new digital camera after a fire at a lithium-ion battery plant run by Matsushita Electric Industrial Co Ltd's battery unit caused supply disruption.Production at Matsushita Battery Industrial's flagship factory in western Japan has been halted since a September 30 fire and it is unclear when it will be able to resume operations—a potential boost to rival battery makers including Sanyo Electric Co Ltd and Sony Corp.Pentax planned to use a certain type of lithium-ion battery from Matsushita for its new digital camera, but the fire and ensuing production halt have made procurement difficult, forcing it to postpone the launch to February 2008 from November.Matsushita's battery business was already hit hard in August when Nokia warned consumers that 46 million batteries made by Matsushita used in its mobile phones could overheat, and offered to replace them for free.Matsushita said on Wednesday it plans to boost output ...
Shots in the Dark

A trio of new DSLRs kill static to take crisper photos in low lightTRENDMore digital cameras now use CMOS (complementary metal-oxide semiconductor) sensors to capture sharper images in dim lighting, with less "pixel noise"—colored flecks that occur at high light-sensitivity settings when the camera's processor tries to boost the brightness in a dark image.REASONSLRs have large sensors that absorb more light than those in point-and-shoots. CMOS is handy at these sizes because it consumes less power than the charge-coupled device (CCD) sensors in earlier models. And CMOS sensors fit noise-reduction circuitry right on the chip.BENEFITAt dawn or dusk, you can photograph outdoor vistas too big for a camera flash to illuminate. Inside, you'll capture scenes in the unique ambient light instead of the harsh, generic glow of flash.Dan Havlik more : popsci ...
Top Gear for Photo Enthusiasts
2007-10-25 19:26:00
So what if you're not paid for your photography? With the right software and hardware you can still make your photos look like a million bucks. But where do you start? Buying professional-grade gear isn't cheap, so you'll want to make sure you invest your cash wisely. It all starts with picking the right camera. Point-and-shoot cameras are good for taking snapshots on vacation or family events, but serious photographers will need to step up to a digital SLR. SLRs, or single lens reflex cameras, direct light toward the viewfinder as you compose a photo, letting you view a crisp optical image while framing, focusing, and snapping the picture. Since you're looking at the actual reflected light and not an LCD approximation, you see a brighter and sharper image, making composition easier. SLRs also tend to have more expensive lenses that produce sharper pictures with better color contrast than point-and-shoot cameras. In the past, buying a D-SLR meant shelling out $5,000 or more—out of ...
Canon's net profit down on yen
2007-10-25 19:22:00
TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan's Canon Inc posted an 8.9 percent drop in quarterly net profit on Thursday, hit by the yen's appreciation, but kept its full-year outlook on the back of strong demand for its digital cameras.Brisk sales of printers and copiers also helped keep Canon, the world's largest maker of digital cameras ahead of Sony Corp, Eastman Kodak Co and Olympus Corp, on track for its eighth straight year of earnings growth.Canon, which makes EOS digital single-lens reflex (SLR) cameras and IXY compact digital cameras, controls nearly half of the global digital SLR camera market, the most lucrative segment of the digital camera industry. SLR cameras are high-end models with interchangeable lenses.Backed by brisk demand, Canon lifted its SLR shipment target for the year to December to 3.2 million units from its previous projection of 3 million units."The momentum is keeping up," Canon Managing Director Masahiro Osawa told a news conference. "It is certain that we can finish this ...

Pentax beats the shakes
2007-10-24 13:18:00
WHEN I first studied photography at school in the late 1970s the SLR camera of choice was the Pentax K1000, a robust manual workhorse that sold for a reasonable price.Thirty years later Pentax is aiming for the same serious-amateur market with the 6.1-megapixel K100D Super digital SLR.Like the K1000, it is quite robust, has manual controls -- though it also has all the auto options you'd expect on a modern digital camera -- and is reasonably priced.Pentax SLRs have lost a lot of ground over the years to Canon and Nikon, so the price has to be good. At retail, you can expect to get the body for about $650.This is much more affordable than the nearest Canon model, the 8.2-megapixel EOS 30D, that sells for about $1400.But apples for apples, it's up against the 6.1-megapixel Nikon D40, priced at about $750.Dave Bullardmore : news ...
In the Aisles at PhotoPlus 2007
2007-10-24 13:09:00
When covering a show as big (and noisy) as last week's PhotoPlus Expo in New York City, it's easy to overlook some of the lower-key products tucked away in the various corners of the show floor. To be sure, the gear that grabbed the most attention at PhotoPlus 2007 was at the front of the hall where Nikon's new flagship digital SLR, the D3, and Canon's new top-of-the-line DSLR, the EOS 1Ds Mark III, were making their debuts. One of the biggest stories of the show was, undoubtedly, whether the Nikon or the Canon booth – which were located directly next to each other – was drawing more foot traffic.Dan Havlikmore : pdnonline ...

Depth of field: The small-sensor difference
2007-10-24 13:00:00
Having struggled on many occasions to explain the difference between cameras sensors the size of a full frame of 35mm film and the vastly more common smaller sensors, I thought I'd point readers toward this lucid explanation of one aspect by Canon tech guru Chuck Westfall in his October column with the Digital Journalist. One reason you might want to pay attention: the vast majority of digital SLRs use smaller sensors than film SLRs, though Canon and Nikon have some high-end exceptions.Westfall details in his article how depth of field changes in relation to sensor size. I'm drawing attention to the issue as an excuse to explain why a common practice in the camera business raises my hackles. Stephen Shanklandmore : news ...
Hasselblad deep-sixing H2 hybrid camera
2007-10-23 14:25:00
Hasselblad, a manufacturer of high-end medium-format cameras, is dropping its H2 product line, a move that spotlights the company's transition from film camera roots to its digital future. The H2 can record images on either film or a digital sensor, but there wasn't sufficient demand for the product, so the company is devoting more resources to its more popular digital-only H3D family, Hasselblad Chief Executive Christian Poulsen said in an announcement to customers Monday.
