Flying subjects
2007-11-04 14:20:00
Just as student pilots train on simulators, you can photograph flying birds before trying to tackle real aircraft. ONE of our readers, Jasmine from Malta, wrote to me asking about photographing aircraft at an air show. I couldn’t help her the first time she enquired about shooting fireworks and now, I am sad to say that I have never shot an air show before. But, thinking back, I did remember taking some photos of seagulls in mid-flight. This may not compare with state-of-the-art fighter aircraft zooming across the sky but the fundamentals of shooting both are similar. Recently, I was invited to Japan by Nikon to witness the launch of their new DSLRs (Digital Single Lens Reflex cameras) and part of the trip was a tour to their high-tech manufacturing facilities in Sendai city where we watched brand new Nikon D3 cameras roll off the production line. It was like watching precision Swiss timepieces being assembled (come to think of it, I haven't witnessed that either but have seen it o ...

A sturdy DSLR to make any shutterbug cheer
2007-11-04 13:31:00
With Christmas fast approaching, camera manufacturers are rushing to release their latest devices in time for the festive season.Among the new releases, one digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) camera will certainly hog the headlines and capture the imagination of photographers, amateurs and professionals alike - the Canon EOS 1Ds Mark (MK) III.Incorporating a whopping 21.1-megapixel image sensor coupled with not one, but two of Canon's Digic III imaging processors, the full-frame 1Ds MK III has plenty of other features that will make any shutterbug drool. This includes a high-speed five-frames-per-second (relatively fast for a full-frame DSLR), a high-precision 19-point auto-focus system, an integrated cleaning system, a liquid crystal display (LCD) Live View function and a reported 300,000 shutter release cycle.Trevor Tanmore : channelnewsasia ...

Digital Camera War Heats Up
2007-11-04 13:28:00
When digital cameras hit the market in the late 1990s, ordinary consumers could not get enough of them. But, now after a decade, it seems to be some minor sellers who have to worry about extinction.Amid the fierce war for survival, Samsung _ an underdog at the moment _ is poised to flex its distribution muscles to grab a bigger piece of the pie in the global market from the other vendors ahead of it _ Canon, Sony, Kodak and Olympus.According to sources last week, Samsung Electronics is bracing itself for an earnest sales campaign through its global network by integrating the sales and marketing functions of Samsung Techwin, the group's aircraft engine and film camera unit.``Samsung Electronics and Samsung Techwin have set up a task force to sell digital cameras through the group's global network,'' one of the sources said on condition of anonymity. ``Samsung's goal is to be the world's top seller by 2010.''Samsung, the consumer-electronics powerhouse based in Seoul, has already ...

Getting back into the fight
2007-11-02 13:01:00
Olympus Imaging recently launched its new professional DSLR, which it hopes will reestablish the company as a market force to be reckoned with. IN THE fast moving, quickly progressing world of digital photography, a lot can happen in a year. Such is the pace that this year’s entry-level model may outclass last year’s top-of-the-range model in several areas – obvious benchmarks being resolution (more megapixels), performance and image quality. So you can probably imagine how fans of Olympus’ DSLR E-system felt as the E-1 clocked up four years as the company’s sole professional offering. While the E-1 is still a very well-designed and superbly built professional DSLR by today’s standards, it is now even eclipsed by cheap consumer DSLRs – including Olympus’ own models – in these benchmarks. But with the launch of the E-3, the Olympus E-System range finally has a king that’s fit to wear the crown. And on many levels, this is also the most important camera the company ha ...

Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III photo gallery : When you are offered the opportunity to work with the latest digital equipment on a location you will probably never visit again; you do not have to think twice! I am talking about an invitation from Canon Europe on a press trip to Kenya with a number of colleagues from the Netherlands and many other countries. No less than 80 journalists from Europe, among them four colleagues from the Netherlands, were flown to Nairobi, Kenya, at the invitation of Canon. In Nairobi small groups were formed to fly to the Borana ranch in the Laikipia area, north of Nairobi and situated by the Mount Kenya. The Canon EOS Safari trip coincided with 20 years of EOS; a unique memorable moment in the digital world!Dennis Hissinkmore : letsgodigital ...
