Sony Alpha DSLR-A700 final production review
2007-11-07 14:00:00
The Alpha A700 is the highly anticipated second DSLR from Sony and the first to be entirely designed by Sony itself. Announced in September 2007 it fills a gap above the original A100 body, targeting serious enthusiasts and semi-pro photographers with higher resolution and more powerful features. The A700 features a jump in resolution to 12.2 Megapixels with a new CMOS sensor, making it the highest resolution Alpha body, and a step-up from existing rival 10 Megapixel DSLRs. The sensor measures the same size as the existing APS-C chip in the A100, so rumours of a 1.25x crop or larger didn’t emerge for this particular model. On the upside though, this makes the A700 compatible with the full range of Alpha lenses including DT models, and like the A100 before it, all effectively become stabilised thanks to the built-in – and improved – Super SteadyShot.Like most new DSLRs, Sony’s made the jump in screen size to 3in, but fitted the A700 with a super high resolution model sporting 640 ...

Many college students have a lot of reasons to have a camera around, not just for fun, but also for the serious photographer. Many college students have a lot of reasons to have a camera around, not just for fun, but also for the serious photographer. Most college students who are not into photography but still want to take pictures need to know what type of camera they should buy before shopping for one.“Every person is different with what they want,” said Tony Topalian, the store manager at Camera Country, located at 875 W. Redcliffs Dr. Suite 2.He said there are three different categories of cameras. First there is the compact, which is a pocket size digital camera.“Compact cameras with a big screen are good for the girls who want to carry them around with them at parties,” Topalian said.Bonnie Coleman more : Dixie Sun ...

Photographing Fireworks
2007-11-07 13:19:00
Yes, it's that time of year again. Clocks go back, nights draw in and people start to set fire to things. It seems only right to head on out into the cold and dark and photograph what they get up to! In this article you'll learn all the tips you need to produce great images of firework displays wherever you are.LocationI would strongly recommend attending an organised display. Not only is it safer it's also cheaper! A great organised event is going to cost you between £5 and £10 and should provide you with at least 30 minutes of photo opportunities. Spend 10 quid on a box of rockets from one of “those” shops and they aren't going to last nearly as long - you could also blow yourself up.At a display you want to make sure you have a clear sight of the fireworks. This sounds obvious but means two things (1) turn up early so you can find out exactly where they are going to explode and (2) turn up early so that you get to the front of the crowd. Most of the action is going to be i ...

Panasonic Lumix DMC-L10 DSLR test
2007-11-07 13:04:00
When it was released in autumn last year, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-L1 raised a lot of eyebrows. Panasonic's first DSLR was an unconventional-looking machine which, although it shared a lot of technology with the Olympus E-330, was unlike anything else around at the time. Panasonic's entry into Four Thirds also marked the arrival of the first stabilised lens in the system, in the form of the Leica D Vario-Elmarit 14-50mm f/2.8-3.5 with Mega OIS, which is bundled with the L1. Leica-badged optics, retro styling and rock-solid construction lent the Lumix L1 an air of quality and luxury appropriate to its £1,499.99 kit price tag, but in the face of stiff (and more affordable) opposition from the other major manufacturers it has failed to take the digital SLR market by storm.Panasonic is keen to stress that the L1 isn't going anywhere, but with the Lumix DMC-L10 the company appears to be aiming squarely at beginners and enthusiasts. Although a better specified camera than its elder brothe ...

Olympus E-3 DSLR Preview Part II
2007-11-05 22:16:00
Earlier in October we attended the Olympus E-3 digital SLR introduction party in New York City. A few days later I had a more detailed tech briefing on the new E-3 at the PhotoPlus Expo tradeshow. I met with Sally Smith Clemens and Toshiyuki Terada, Manager of DSLR Planning from Olympus Tokyo. At the meeting I got to see some of the guts of the E-3, including the image-stabilized Live MOS sensor assembly, the new auto focus drive system, and the specially formed magnesium camera chassis.Improved Image StabilizationThe E-3 shares the same basic sensor-shift image stabilization system that the E-510 uses. However, Olympus has increased the sensitivity of the gyro motion sensor that detects camera movement. The E-510 was supposed to be able to compensate for up to three stops of movement. Olympus is claiming that the new E-3 DSLR can successfully shoot up to four or even five shutter speeds slower. We shot a little video of the mechanism to show you how it works. Notice how the imaging s ...

Panasonic Lumix DMC-L10K - CNET editors' review
2007-11-05 22:02:00
When Panasonic introduced its first digital SLR, the Lumix DMC-L1, a lot of people had high hopes, which were subsequently dashed. Now, Panasonic has put out the 10-megapixel Lumix DMC-L10. If the L1 was Panasonic dipping its toes in the SLR pool, then the L10 is Panasonic diving into the deep end. Will the DMC-L10 sink or swim? Let's find out.Panasonic is marketing the L10 as an entry-level SLR, and its design works well for that market. It's on the small side, has an articulated LCD that can flip out to the left of the camera and swivel 270 degrees, live-view shooting, and its control buttons are laid out a lot like a superzoom or compact camera. The vast majority of buttons are on the right-hand side of the camera and reachable quickly and easily by thumb or forefinger. Like more and more SLRs lately, the grip is short, so your pinky dangles while shooting. However, it does have a nice shape, with a cutaway for your middle finger and a contoured area on the top of the camera back ...

Panasonic Lumix L10 Review
2007-11-05 22:00:00
The second full-featured digital SLR from Panasonic is the new Lumix DMC-L10. And while Panasonic is a relative newcomer to the SLR marketplace, the L10 packs an impressive set of features and a very interesting lens into one unique camera kit.The DMC-L10 is a traditional-looking camera that looks something like a cross between an old fashioned film SLR and the Panasonic DMC-FZ50 all-in-one camera. The L10 comes loaded with new features including a fully articulating LCD monitor, improved user menus, a full ten megapixels of resolution and the ability to use contrast-detection auto focus in Live View mode using the sensor itself (though only with compatible lenses). There are also several features that have migrated from Panasonic's compact Lumix range, including Intelligent ISO mode, image stabilization built into the lens, and compatibility with SD and SDHC memory cards. Sony Vario Sonnar T* DT 16-80mm f/3.5-4.5 ZA user reviews
2007-11-04 14:34:00
I just returned this lens ( DT 16-80mm f3.5-4.5 ZA ) because I wanted the very highest IQ I could afford , and had purchased it thinking this was it . The lens also had small but sometimes at high magnification visible CA .I had seen some very good ( great ) photos on DP Review Sony SLR Forums .I must have received a poor quality sample from the dealer .The build was very good , I believe the focus was smoother and finer than the Sigma focus . The rubber zoom and focus grips are ribbed too fine and do collect small bits and pieces or anything .Bottom line , just be sure you have the right to return the lens within a month or more , because it may take some time to isolate the cause of image blur .I finally decided that for night street scenes I needed an f 2.8 or better to see into the dark areas for framing the shot .JAMES00567more : photodo ...
