Samsung GX10 DSLR camera review
2008-01-30 08:35:00
REVIEW: 30 January 2008 - Samsung’s entry in to the D-SLR marketplace came by rebadging Pentax D-SLRs and allows the company to build a corner in the market from which it can attempt to expand its market share. Samsung threw money at building its compact model market share and it has worked and Samsung assured us that it will develop its “own” D-SLRs in the near future and already the GX10’s update, the imaginatively named GX20 has been announced. So, it is not before time that the GX10 arrived on my desk and on the face of it, the camera is identical to the Pentax K10D on which it is based. Advantages are the camera has a massive lens range to adopt with an even bigger installed lens base as all KA and KAF2 optics can be used.Build is tough with key camera seals proofed against ingress of dirt and moisture including the SDHC external storage port on the camera’s right side. The 10.2-megapixel sensor boasts a sensor cleaning system that unfortunately clearly does not work prop ...

Nikon D300 vs Canon EOS 40D: A Hands-On Workout
2008-01-30 08:01:00
Although the technology-showcase D300 ($1800) costs 50 percent more than the EOS 40D ($1200), we found them to be more evenly matched than we expected. While mid-priced DSLRs from competing manufacturers may excel in different ways, these semi-pro models from Canon and Nikon give you a winning combination of speed, image quality, extensive lens/accessory systems, and an upgrade path to their top-drawer professional brethren. Of course, pitting the two against each other isn't entirely fair, since the technology-showcase D300 ($1800), a junior version of Nikon's tour-de-force flagship D3, costs 50 percent more than the EOS 40D ($1200), which has evolved from humbler "prosumer" models. Still, we found them to be more evenly matched than we expected, based on our evaluations in the key areas detailed below.Jonathan Barkey more : popphoto ...

Hands On: Zeiss ZF Macros for Nikon
2008-01-30 07:59:00
We test drive two new manual focus primes from Zeiss that are razor sharp and impressively heavy.I've been shooting lately with two new Nikon F-mount Zeiss lenses, the ZF 100mm f/2 Makro-Planar T* ($1,500, street) and the ZF 50mm f/2 Makro-Planar T* ($999, estimated street). As you'd expect from a Zeiss-made optic, they are both simply razor sharp, and are also impressively heavy, in these days of featherweight zooms, due in part to their full-metal barrel. No, they don't have autofocus -- nor do any of the other "premium" manual-focus lenses Zeiss is making for Nikon F, Pentax K, and M42 (threaded) mounts -- but I haven't really missed it.Depth of field is so shallow when you're shooting very close that autofocus can be more of a hindrance than a help: Wide-area AF arrays rarely pick the focus point you need to put the plane of focus where it should be to optimize depth of field, and even if you switch to single-point AF it can take a few lock-focus-and-recompose routines to get ...

Sony Develops 35mm full size CMOS Image Sensor with 24.81 Effective Megapixel resolution
2008-01-30 07:31:00
Sony Develops 35mm full size CMOS Image Sensor with 24.81 Effective Megapixel resolution and extremely high signal conversion speed for use in Digital SLR CamerasAll-pixel scan mode of 6.3 frame/sTokyo, Japan - Sony Corporation today announced the development of a 35mm full size (diagonal:43.3mm/Type 2.7) 24.81 effective megapixel, ultra-high speed high image quality CMOS image sensor designed to meet the increasing requirement for rapid image capture and advanced picture quality within digital SLR cameras. Development backgroundIn recent years, the demand for digital SLR cameras featuring high resolution and wide graduation ranges capable of capturing every detail of the subject matter has continued to increase, particularly among high-end amateur users. Additionally, the increasing user requirement to shoot from the same focal length and angle as 35mm film cameras using interchangeable lenses has led to significant interest in the development of 35mm, full size CMOS image sensors. How ...

New CMOS sensors catching on in cameras
2008-01-29 14:09:00
LAS VEGAS--You may not know it from the outside, but digital cameras are getting something like an eye transplant.Deep within every digital camera is a sensor chip whose job it is to capture light. Most camera sensors today use CCD (charge-coupled device) technology, but a newer approach called CMOS (complementary metal oxide semiconductor) is catching on, particularly at the high end of the market. CMOS advantages can include lower noise, lower power consumption, lower price, and faster response times. In the prestigious and fast-growing digital SLR (single-lens reflex) camera market, Canon and Olympus have used CMOS sensors for years, but high-profile new arrivals on the CMOS bandwagon include Sony, Pentax, Samsung, and most notably Nikon.CMOS itself has been around for decades--it's the method used to manufacture the vast majority of computer processors--but its use as an image sensor rather than an information processor is a relatively new development. In recent years it's begun ...

Nikon D60 review
2008-01-29 13:39:00
Nikon D60 digital SLR camera review : Nikon changed direction with the introduction of the D40 in 2006 and the D40x in 2007. The digital SLR camera was allowed to become compact and one should be able to carry it around just as easily as a compact camera. Of course there are limits from a technical point of view as to how compact a DSLR can get, but it's definitely a great achievement to develop a compact digital SLR camera and keep it easy to handle at the same time. Nikon is continuing the concept of the D40 / D40x with the introduction of the Nikon D60.• Read our complete Nikon D60 review.Mark Petersmore : letsgodigital ...

Nikon D60 brief hands-on
2008-01-29 13:34:00
Pre-PMA 2008: We've had a little bit of a chance to play around with and handle the Nikon's latest digital SLR, the D60. Here we line it up against the camera we suspect it replaces: the D40X and see what Nikon has done to refresh one of its recent successes. The differences between the two models is, to say the least, subtle. The D60 shares its body with the D40X and most of their specifications are identical. The D60 adds a two-pronged method for combating dust accumulation on the sensor - a system to shake dust from the sensor and another channel dust away from the sensor in the first place.Other than this, the D60 adds active d-lighting that helps maximize dynamic range by adjusting exposure to retain highlights then boosting shadows. It also adds a digital rangefinder that indicates subject distance when manually focusing lenses. A stop-motion mode lets the camera clump individual frames together as an animation - the first time we've seen this feature on a DSLR. At the cherry-o ...
