Canon, Nikon Face Off in Major DSLR War
2007-11-13 06:08:00
The popularity of Internet blogs and mini-homepages has made digital photography a national hobby of South Korean youngsters. On any sunny day, there are endless flows of young women strolling on the cobbled street by the Kyeongbok Palace, with digital cameras in their handbags or hanging around their neck. While the point-and-shoot compact camera market is thought to be almost saturated, camera makers are now focusing on the high-end digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) cameras. Those expensive cameras were once for professional photographers and photojournalists, but now they are becoming more and more popular among amateurs especially those in their 20s and 30s. Lowepro Vertex 200 AW Camera Backpack
2007-11-10 08:34:00
I’ve been using the Lowepro Vertex 200 AW backpack for a few months now. Generally it carries a Canon EOS-1D Mark III, Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L, Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di, Canon EF 28-300MM f/3.5-5.6 L IS, a Canon 550 EX flash, Pocket Wizard radio slaves, memory cards, extra AA batteries, and miscellaneous other pieces of photographic paraphernalia. The backpack has a sophisticated harness system, holds a laptop computer, and features Lowepro’s adjustable Glide-Lock system for attaching a tripod or Lowepro Slip-Lock accessories to the outside of the backpack. It also has weather-resistant zippers and Lowepro’s Patented “All Weather Cover.” The Glide-Lock system carried my compact travel tripod securely and was easier to use than other tripod attachments I’ve used in the past. The Vertex 200 AW also comes with another removable tripod holder that will carry a larger tripod on the rear of the backpack. Photo-Johnmore : photographyreview ...
Canon telling EOS 40D owners to expect Camera Raw fix soon
2007-11-10 08:19:00
Customers calling in to Canon USA's customer support centre this week are being advised that an upcoming firmware update for the EOS 40D will fix an incompatibility between that camera's RAW CR2 files and Adobe's Camera Raw plug-in, Photoshop Lightroom and DNG Converter software. The incompatibility - which prevents the CR2 files from being processed - apparently affects only EOS 40D bodies with firmware v1.0.4 inside, and v1.0.4 only recently supplanted v1.0.3 as the firmware being installed at the factory. Version 1.0.4 has not been made available for download from a Canon website, so only newer cameras, and those who may have had the firmware installed during a service visit, are impacted by this. The new firmware, presumably to be called v1.0.5 or higher, is expected to be released for download by the end of November 2007. More information on the problem, and a link to a utility that purportedly corrects the incompatibility by altering the metadata in v1.0.4 CR2 files, is in th ...
Eye-Fi makes pretty ideas come true
2007-11-10 08:07:00
The Eye-Fi wireless memory card for digital cameras is rather clever. You can insert this memory card in any camera that works with the standard Secure Digital (SD) format and the card can transmit pictures as you take them or later over a Wi-Fi network. Pictures can be transferred to a computer on a local network, uploaded to various photo gallery and social-networking sites, or both. The Eye-Fi is supposed to solve three related hitches that make it time-consuming to move pictures from a camera to a computer or Web site. First, there's no cable. You don't need to find a cradle, a USB slot, or the particular style of connector you need to move pictures off the camera.Second, there's no effort involved in transferring pictures. You turn the camera on and leave it on within range of a network you've configured for the Eye-Fi, and then walk away.Third, the company's Web servers can automatically transfer your pictures to one of 17 initially supported services with zero additional effo ...
Japanese Digital Camera Makers Revising Up FY' 07 Shipment Plans
2007-11-10 08:04:00
Tokyo, Nov 8, 2007 (Jiji Press) - Many Japanese digital camera makers are revising up their shipment plans for fiscal 2007 to cash in on the expanding market, both at home and abroad.Industry leader Canon Inc. has recently announced it plans to ship 25 million digital cameras in the current fiscal year to March 2008, up from an initial shipment plan of 24 million units. The revised figure represents an 18.5 pct increase from the previous year.Sony Corp. , the second largest digital camera manufacturer, has lifted its planned shipment volume to 22 million units from 20 million units. The revised figure is up 26.4 pct from the previous year.Behind the rise in demand for digital cameras is an increase in product line-ups for single-lens reflex cameras, which, until several years ago, were mostly targeted at professionals. With many digital camera makers launching low-priced SLR models that can be easily used by beginners, "they are whetting the appetites of first-time SLR camera users," a ...

Olympus E-3 Digital SLR Review
2007-11-09 11:52:00
As my first ever camera was an Olympus OM-1 I have fond memories of the Olympus brand. When Nikon and Canon lead the way in the pro arena with models like the F3 and F1n Olympus beavered away on models that were lighter and quieter. but lacked in durability so when AF arrived Canon and Nikon both lead, leaving Olympus to concentrate on compact cameras. Now things have changed. The E-1 made a small dent in the pro arena but this all-new E-3 looks set to reshape Olympus' pro business and become a serious competitor in the field.Olympus invited a selection of photography magazine editors from around Europe for an exclusive trial of the E3. I joined them for the event in Istanbul on what they'd hoped would be a sunny day but turned out to be wetter than a typical UK day in April. Luckily the camera has waterproof seals! It was quite a rushed experience giving us a flavour/opportunity to sample many of the camera's features over three assignments - a fashion shoot, an editorial travel assi ...
