Worth Buying a DSLR for Your Travel Photography? Take this Quiz
2007-11-26 12:58:00
Digital SLRs are very popular items these days, especially among travelers. This article will explore the fundamental differences between a DSLR and a compact digicam, plus the facts on what a DSLR can and can’t do. We will end with a quiz to test if you’d be better off with a lighter pack and a point & shoot. The two fundamental advantages of SLR:1) You can see the image just as it will appear (through the lens).2) You can change the lens. Number one is no longer exclusive to SLRs. Every digicam on the market today has a large LCD that lets you see “live” what you will take. In many ways they are more advanced than DSLRs, (Example: Allowing you to actually see the change in brightness or White Balance before you ever take the photo.)So now we are left with changing lenses as the only fundamental difference. If you got a DSLR would you buy, and carry, multiple lenses? (opps did a say a quiz question already?)The major things a DSLR can do for you: Ryan Libre more : thetravelersn ...
The Ultimate DSLR Lens
2007-11-26 12:54:00
Got a photogenic pet? How about kids who play indoor sports or perform in band concerts? If you've graduated to a digital SLR and if you anticipate one heck of a holiday bonus, here's what should be on your wishlist : a 70-200mm zoom lens with a generous f/2.8 maximum aperture (lens opening) and optical image stabilization (OIS).Whether you're halfway back in a school auditorium, shooting from the sidelines to the middle of a playing field under night lighting, or following your pet romping in the yard, you'll have enough magnification at 200mm to fill the frame. Indoors in an arena or auditorium or outdoors at dusk, you can turn the digital film speed (ISO setting) all the way up and have enough light for decent exposures. An image stabilizer offsets camera motion and lets you do good work at one-quarter to one-eighth the shutter speed you could otherwise. Translation: If you can hold a non-OIS lens steady for 1/200 to 1/250 second (not as easy as it sounds with a telephoto lens), ...
Smithsonian magazine 5th Annual Photo Contest
2007-11-26 03:25:00
For the past four years, Smithsonian editors have judged a total of 58,500 photographs from more than 90 countries around the globe. As we enter our fifth year, we have a clear sense of what makes a photograph a Smithsonian winner. Technical quality, clarity and composition are all important, but so too is a flair for the unexpected and the ability to capture the right moment. We are excited when we can see the photograph through your eyes—through your skill, your passion, your vision. Contestants can enter photographs in five categories, The Natural World, Americana, Altered Images, Travel and People, that represent subjects of special interest to the magazine. Fifty finalists will be selected, ten for each of the five categories. Smithsonian will notify the 50 finalists by March 31, 2008. From these 50 finalists, five category winners and a grand prize winner will be selected. The entries of all winners and finalists will be published on the magazine's Web site on April 1, 2008. A ...

Panasonic Lumix DMC-L10 full review
2007-11-26 01:10:00
The Lumix DMC-L10 is Panasonic’s second digital SLR, and unlike its debut model, this one’s aimed squarely at the consumer market. Launched at the IFA trade show in Berlin during August 2007, the new L10 shares little more than a lens mount with Panasonic’s debut DSLR, the somewhat esoteric L1. So while both models are based on the Four Thirds standard, almost everything else is different. The new Lumix L10 sports the same 10 Megapixel N-MOS sensor as the Olympus E-410 and E-510 models, equipping the camera with Live View facilities. Making these much more useful though is the L10’s flip-out screen – the first we’ve seen on a DSLR since the Olympus E-330. Panasonic has further exploited the benefits of Live View to support contrast-based AF which allows the L10 to focus during Live View without flipping its mirror back and forth. The L10 even supports Face Detection – a first for a DSLR.While the Lumix L10 can use any lens designed for the Four Thirds system, you’ll need ...

Improvements keep people focused on new cameras
2007-11-25 04:26:00
Digital camera sales are defying expectations. Two years ago, camera sales were expected to hit a peak and begin falling. Instead, sales are expected to grow 16% this year, and analyst Chris Chute at research firm IDC expects them to grow an additional 8% in 2008.ADVICE: Today's cameras bruise easily, so handle with care"We really thought the growth had ended," Chute says. "People are either upgrading their cameras now, because prices are so low, or replacing dead models."About 122 million cameras will be shipped to stores this year, up from 105 million in 2006, IDC says.Camera manufacturers have found new ways to entice buyers, with tools such as image stabilization, first found in video cameras."It's really easy to understand," says Chute. "You don't want blurry shots? Try this camera, it will compensate for a shaky hand - and it really works."In the USA, about 65% of households own at least one digital camera, or 106 million Americans, says the Photo Marketing Association. One of t ...

Nikon Canada Reduces Pricing in Light of Canadian Dollar
2007-11-23 08:30:00
Retailers like Sears and Wal-Mart Canada aren’t the only ones making moves to adjust pricing in line with the strong Canadian dollar and the anticipation toward Black Friday in the U.S.: Nikon Canada has announced reduced pricing on all of its Coolpix point-and-shoot digital cameras, all of its DSLRs, and select NIKKOR interchangeable lenses.“At Nikon Canada, we are proud to announce a further price reduction for our Coolpix, digital SLRs, and NIKKOR interchangeable lenses; a move that shows our continued efforts to provide Canadian consumers with the best value in both products and services,” said Gregory Flasch, National Advertising and Communications Manager, Nikon Canada.Flasch goes onto advise that it’s “impossible” to achieve parity with U.S. prices because of things like economies of scale, tax rates, Canada’s health care system and social infrastructure. “Nikon Canada believes its price reductions make its products competitive with U.S. pricing, especially whe ...
Digital Camera Buyers' Guide - Year of the SLR
2007-11-23 08:24:00
Many predicted that 2007 would be the year of the digital SLR, and industry shipments confirm the huge growth in DSLR sales. In a time where home sales fell through the floor in the US and gas prices began to soar, digital SLR sales have grown dramatically. In the third quarter of this year digital camera sales increased 22% compared to the previous year, but industry breakdowns show DSLR sales almost doubled in the same period. That means that this holiday season many of you will be looking for a new digital SLR camera to replace an aging point-and-shoot digital or an earlier DSLR. While there haven't been many new entry-level models in the last year, the $1000 "advanced amateur" models of last year are today's entry-level DSLR. Several manufacturers have also redefined "entry-level" SLR down to $400 and have very capable models selling for that price, including a lens.Only a few new models have appeared in "Entry-level" this year. We will cover these in a look at entry-level choices ...
