When Nikon shipped the D200 a couple of years ago, its combination of speed and photo quality blew away the limited competition, and provided a powerful, relatively inexpensive alternative to Nikon's then top-of-the-line D2X. After months of rumor and rampant speculation, Nikon formally announced the much-anticipated pro body D3 on August 23, 2007. Somewhat of a surprise was the concurrent announcement of what most folks assumed to be the prosumer Nikon D300, ostensibly the follow-on to the D200. Both cameras reached the market near the end of November, with the much more limited production D3 still being hard to find if you don't qualify as a Nikon pro or weren't on the pre-order bandwagon back in August. The A700 takes exceptionally sharp, well-exposed shots.First impressions of the Alpha DSLR-A700, Sony's £1,124 inc VAT, 12Mp digital single-lens reflex camera, brings to mind terms like "massive," "brick-like," and "complex". With its deep righthand grip and 1.25Kg weight (which includes the zoom lens in the kit we tested), it feels big and heavy.That impression is, however, a bit deceiving. The Sony Alpha DSLR-A700's body is comparable in size to the Canon EOS 30D, and most of the Sony's weight is in the lens - the body, without a battery, is 0.68g, less than the 30D or the Samsung Digimax GX-10 we reviewed at the same time as the Sony.
