How Nikon bettered Canon with full-frame SLRs
2007-12-22 13:00:00
Canon beat Nikon to market by years with a high-end digital SLR whose image sensor is the size of a full frame of 35mm film. But while Nikon may have been late to the party with its new D3, I think it employed a much smarter approach to a lens compatibility issue. One of the chief merits of single-lens reflex (SLR) cameras is their ability to accommodate multiple lenses, letting photographers adapt the same camera body to shoot everything from faraway birds to the confined quarters of a small house. It's annoying that one company's lenses generally don't work on another company's camera bodies, but it's even more annoying when a single company's products are incompatible, and the full-frame trend in higher-end cameras has put the spotlight on the issue. more : news ...

Sound Advice: Pentax K10D camera is a Porsche for a Pontiac price
2007-12-22 12:58:00
Q: I'm buying a digital SLR camera and you write favorably about Pentax. I've seen the K10D, their top model, on sale recently with a $100 rebate. That makes it the same price as the entry-level Canon Digital Rebel XTi and Nikon D40x. Do you think the K10D is a better buy at approximately the same price? Anything else I should considerSTELIOS DOKIANAKISPittsburghA: I have used Pentax cameras for years and have always been pleased, particularly with the beautiful color rendition they are renowned for. (If you want to see a sample, look at the Paul C. Buff post under "Field Trips" on my Website.) Whether the K10D is right for you is best determined by what kind of camera you want and need. There are three classes of digital SLRs: professional, consumer and "prosumer."Professional models are heavy-duty workhorses with lightning-fast responses and a wide range of settings. This category is completely dominated by Canon and Nikon. Prices start at over $3,000 and go way up from there.more ...

Canon EOS 40D Digital Camera Review
2007-12-22 12:57:00
A year and a half in the making, Canon’s EOS 40D modifies the foundation set by the EOS 30D and 20D, while incorporating elements from the manufacturer’s 1D line. The camera is centered on a 10.1-megapixel APS-C-sized CMOS sensor, paired with a newly developed DIGIC III image processor, which boosts the continuous burst speed up to 6.5 frames per second. Mechanical improvements include a renovated autofocus system with 9 cross-type sensors, and the addition of Canon’s Integrated Cleaning System (dust reduction). Additional weatherproofing has been applied around the base plate and compartment doors, and a large 3-inch Live View LCD screen is affixed to the camera body. Canon also worked in Silent Shooting modes, sRAW files, and a revamped menu structure. The 40D is offered in various kits, ranging in price from $1,299 to $1,799, depending on the packaged lens.more : digitalcamerainfo ...

Lowepro Slingshot 300 AW Review
2007-12-22 12:52:00
The Lowepro Slingshot 300 AW is the largest model of Lowepro's Slingshot cases. It is similar to the Lowepro Slingshot 200 AW and Lowepro Slingshot 100 AW but significantly larger. As I said in the other two Slingshot reviews, I'm always looking for additional and better ways to carry and protect my gear. The Lowepro Slingshot cases have quickly become very popular, so I tried all three models currently in the line to find out if they were right for me. Over the last several months, I've been using them along with the Lowepro Toploaders that I most frequently use (at least at this time) for my light gear needs.Characteristic of a sling type of case is the single padded and liberally adjustable shoulder strap that goes over the head and hangs on a shoulder. The Slingshots are designed to hang from the right shoulder. Unique to the Lowepro Slingshot 300 AW is the full weight-supporting waist belt instead of the small side strap found on the 100 and 200. A handle is provided for carryi ...

Lowepro Slingshot 200 AW Review
2007-12-22 12:50:00
The Lowepro Slingshot 200 AW is the middle-sized model of Lowepro's Slingshot cases. It is basically the same as the Lowepro Slingshot 100 AW but larger. As I said in the 100 review, I'm always looking for additional and better ways to carry and protect my gear. The Lowepro Slingshot cases have quickly become very popular, so I tried all three models currently in the line to find out if they were right for me. The Slingshots are designed to hang from the right shoulder. An additional strap and clip under the right arm optionally secure the case while it is in the on-the-back position. A handle is provided for carrying the Slingshot off-the-shoulder. Continuing like the 100 ... To ...

Olympus E-3 review
2007-12-21 11:15:00
When Olympus and its partners introduced the innovative Four-Thirds system in 2003 it was considered by some to be a bold move. Now however, the system has become quite popular with a broad group of enthusiasts and over the years Olympus steadily kept adding new cameras and lenses to the range. The only thing that didn’t seem to materialise was an update to the E-1 pro model. This was by now four years old and - although still a potent camera - its specs were definitely becoming outdated for today’s discerning photographer. Now that 2007 has almost come to a close, we can finally introduce its successor, the Olympus E-3, the new flagship in Olympus’ Four-Thirds range. This 10-megapixel DSLR is clearly aimed at professional photographers, with the world’s fastest AF system and shutter speeds of up to 1/8000s; a range of new Zuiko Digital Supersonic Wave Drive lenses together with built in image stabilisation; Live View and the familiar Supersonic Wave Filter to keep the sensor du ...

Sony Alpha DSLR-A700 Review
2007-12-21 03:07:00
It's been almost two years since Konica Minolta pulled out of the photo business and transferred its entire camera division to Sony, and well over a year since the first Sony DSLR (the DSLR-A100) was announced. Two years is a long time in the digital SLR market, but the three years Minolta (latterly Konica Minolta, now Sony) SLR users have been waiting for a high end model to replace the innovative Maxxum (Dynax) 7D must have felt like a lifetime. But, finally, it's here, and it looks very much like the mockup shown earlier in the year.Like the A100, the new camera still wears its Konica Minolta heritage very much on its sleeve, and when you start to look a little more closely at the specification it's obvious that there's still an awful lot of Konica Minolta DNA in the A700. This is hardly surprising given that the circumstances behind its development. And, just as the A100 was obviously based on - and designed to be a successor to - the KM 5D, the A700 follows on from the 7D, and ...

Hands On with the Nikon D300
2007-12-19 13:00:00
Competition is at a record high in the mid-level digital SLR category and Nikon has staked its claim with its D300. At $1,800 (body only), the D300 is one of the more expensive prosumer models on the market but its advanced features, above average image quality, strong low-light capabilities and speedy autofocus performance can certainly justify the extra dollars, especially if your bank account is flush and you’re looking for a D3/D300 back-up combination. It has been a while since there’s been a really heated (or justified) Nikon versus Canon debate but the D300 – and, more likely, the D3 – has re-ignited the competitive flames. Despite loyalties to one brand or the other, the D300/D3 one-two punch is definitely food for thought regardless of which side of the fence you’re on.Catching Up or Nipping at Heels?Equipped with a 12.3 megapixel CMOS sensor, 14-bit A/D converter, on-board sensor cleaning system, Live View and a high resolution 3-inch LCD, the D300 meets or exceeds t ...
