Macro Photography, Microscopic Details
2007-12-28 09:45:00
WHEN Riva Berkovitz moved close to Griggs Park in Brookline, Mass., its beauty inspired her to take up photography.“I needed to capture it but I realized I couldn’t paint it,” Ms. Berkovitz said. “So I decided to buy a digital camera.”Ms. Berkovitz assumed she would use the camera for landscapes. But she ended up concentrating on the minute rather than the sweeping: close-ups of the fine details of flowers. She recently bought an Olympus digital single-lens reflex camera and a special close-up, or macro, lens.“If it were not for a digital camera and a computer, I would not be a photographer,” said Ms. Berkovitz, who recently turned 79.Close-up photography, of course, long predates the rise of the digital camera. But digital photography, along with the introduction of electronic light metering in cameras, has overcome many of the exposure and framing problems that previously made it something of a chore. And digital cameras also offer the ability to quickly review close-up ...
Nikon D300 Review
2007-12-28 09:40:00
The landscape of the mid-range D-SLRs has been taking form over the last six months, with a slew of new releases from the likes of Canon, Olympus and Sony. However, one big player was missing; Nikon's D300. Well finally it has arrived, and we can tell you it has been worth the wait.Sitting at a price point slightly higher than most of its competitors, this most definitely isn't a happy snap camera. It boasts a 12.1-megapixel sensor, six-frame per second shooting and a massive 51 auto-focus points, indicating it is clearly targeted at professionals and amateurs with a wad of cash burning a hole in their pocket. We tested using a 24-85mm lens which differs a little from the default kit lens, so keep that in mind. As you'd expect the image quality is nothing short of stunning. With a higher sensor resolution than its chief rival, Canon's EOS 40D, it captures incredible amounts of detail. As with previous Nikon SLRs, the D300's images tend to be slightly towards the soft side, but that ...
Are new Canon SLRs coming in January?
2007-12-25 23:53:00
A Swedish Web site, Kamera and Bild, has quoted Canon Sweden executive Robert Westin as saying the camera maker plans to launch new products on January 24, a week before the Photo Marketing Association trade show begins. That prediction is about as hard to make as figuring out if General Motors will share news at the Detroit auto show, but it does give us an excuse to venture our suspicions. My bet (and I'm not alone) is that we'll hear about successors to the entry-level EOS Digital Rebel XTi and the full-frame EOS 5D. They're the most elderly products in Canon's SLR line, but let me offer some other data, too. Timing is one indicator. Canon has updated its entry-level SLR line roughly once every year and a half. Canon announced in August 2006 the 10.1-megapixel Rebel XTi, the third generation of Canon's entry-level digital SLR line; the the 8.2-megapixel Digital Rebel XT was in February 2005, and the 6.3-megapixel Digital Rebel announcement was in August 2002.Stephen Shanklandmor ...
Canon, Nikon want 'friendly rivalry' to spur camera market
2007-12-25 23:41:00
Canon Inc. and Nikon Corp. want to move their digital single-lens reflex camera businesses onto a path of higher sustained growth through friendly rivalry, despite their neck-and-neck race for No. 1 in the world ahead of next year's Beijing Olympics, the companies' presidents said in recent interviews."Technology will not improve if there is only one leading company," Canon President Tsuneji Uchida said at the company's Tokyo head office Dec. 14.Nikon President Michio Kariya said in a separate interview Dec. 13 his Tokyo-based company has no intention of competing head-on with Canon in the fast-growing global market for digital SLR cameras.Noting that the corporate size of Nikon is much smaller than Canon's, Kariya said his company thinks it is important to offer new types of cameras to consumers when its chief rival does not, instead of waging battles with similarly priced products around the same time.As a matter of course, new models should be high quality, he said, but added th ...

Tokina AT-X DX 10-17mm f/3.5-4.5 Fisheye Review
2007-12-25 23:07:00
Build and handlingThe lens is relatively small and lightweight for it’s capabilities and sports a slightly retro ‘crackle’ finish that gives a not unpleasant feel to the optic. A conventionally styled lens, it has two rings separated by a distance window, marked in both metres and feet. The first of the two rings operates the zoom mechanism and is marked at 10, 12, 13, 14, 15 and 17mm and is well torqued, giving a feeling of solidity to the zoom mechanism. The front ring operates the focus mechanism and is torqued much more lightly when in MF mode but is stiff and not over-rideable in AF mode. The AF mechanism rotates the ring and does so with a quiet whine. It is, however, quite quick. The front of the lens sports a fixed hood with no filter thread and the lens cap is a nice fit over the wings of the hood.more : photodo ...
Sigma 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 DC OS Review
2007-12-25 23:05:00
Sigma 18-200mm Build and HandlingThis lens is surprisingly solid in its construction and is heavier again by half than its non-OS sibling. The difference is not just from the OS system though, with a better overall feel to it that encourages confidence in its abilities. Not that the lens is heavy, but it is certainly no plastic fantastic! Two substantial, rubber embossed rings, one to operate the zoom and the other for manual focussing adorn the majority of the barrel. Both are nicely torqued with the focussing ring being the lighter of the two to use when in manual mode. Two control switches adorn the left of the barrel (Canon and Sigma fit) one for the AF on/off and the other for the OS on/off. Both are sturdy and have well protected collars. A smaller zoom lock switch also sits just to the left of centre. The zoom action extends the barrel by some 60mm on a double trombone that has virtually no play in it. The first of the trombone sections is helpfully marked with a reproduction rat ...

Photology
2007-12-24 08:51:00
The first time you run the program it starts searching through your computer's hard drive, building an index of all the pictures it finds. It quickly analyses each picture using statistical and artificial intelligence algorithms, and builds a database which can be searched using filters. The process is surprisingly quick, and requires no user input. I have well over 20,000 photos on my hard drive, but Photology was able to index all of them in just a few hours. Each time the program is used after that, it quickly checks to see if any new photos have been added, and adds any that it finds to its index. The user interface is extremely simple and attractively designed. A row of buttons down the left of the screen offer a number of search categories, including date by year and month, the rough time of day (morning, afternoon, evening and night), location (indoors or outdoors), features such as orientation, over or under exposure, degree of focus and monochrome, text from captions or descri ...

Poll: Best SLR rivals to Canon and Nikon
2007-12-23 23:40:00
Canon and Nikon dominate the SLR camera business, but if you're entering the market or buying a new camera, it would behoove you to look at other options, too.One interesting question, though, is who's got the best alternatives today. It's a relevant question for someone buying a first SLR or deciding whether to stick with an existing brand or change. From another perspective, who should Nikon and Canon be fretting about most among competitors?I'd love to see your vote and hear your likes and dislikes, and other thoughts in the Talkback section below. There are two broad classes of alternatives. First, the companies that already have an established presence in the camera market: Fujifilm, Leica, Olympus, Pentax, and Sigma. Second are the newcomers from the consumer electronics realm: Panasonic, Samsung, and Sony. There are some alliances here that make that rough division more complicated than might appear at first blush. First, Sony's SLR effort is built on the assets it acquired ...
Delivering on the Promise of the 4/3 System?
2007-12-23 23:32:00
When we were taking a look at the new Digital SLR cameras for our recent Digital SLR Buyers Guide the Olympus E-510 proved to be a really impressive entry - except for one serious flaw. This small, fast, reasonably-priced 10 megapixel DSLR came with kit lenses that were also very small and much better quality than we normally see in kit lenses from the bigger players. It also featured Live View, which was pioneered by Olympus, body-integral Image Stabilization that worked with any lens, and automatic sensor cleaning, which was also pioneered by Olympus but which is now finding its way into cameras from all the makers. We were reminded how far the 4/3 system had developed with the E-510 and made a mental note to take a closer look at the Olympus E-3 to see if Olympus could finally fix their biggest issue. The E-3 is the Pro level DSLR which had been announced as a replacement for the four year old and seriously out-of-date E-1, and no there was never an E-2.I have toyed with the 4/3 dig ...
