Digital SLR market booms
2008-01-05 09:56:00
In digital photography, 2007 was a strong year for higher-end digital SLRs.Already, single-lens reflex cameras were disproportionately popular as photographers moved to models that responded quickly and worked better in dim conditions. The bulk and expense were worth it. But a panoply of new models arrived to satisfy the needs of experts and professionals in 2007. First was Canon's $5,000 EOS-1D Mark III, a rugged 10.1-megapixel photojournalist model unveiled in March that can shoot 10.5 frames per second. Alas for Canon, the camera's record was blighted with concerns about its autofocus performance. But the floodgates opened in the second half of the year with Canon's top-end, $8,000 21.1-megapixel 1Ds Mark III. Canon hopes this full-frame model not only wlll keep professional SLR shooters loyal but also to woo studio photographers using even more expensive medium-format cameras. Announced at the same time in August and aimed at the serious enthusiast was the 40D, a $1,300 10.1-mega ...

Object of Desire: LM DSLR Macro Lens
2008-01-05 09:52:00
If you like getting close, as in really close, to your subject, you might want to consider this super macro lens that will turn your digital SLR into a virtual microscope. Developed by an Austrian company called Micro Tech Lab, the 40mm LM DSLR Macro lens screws into your existing lens, enabling you to take extreme close-ups with a linear magnification of 6.25x. The one catch is that it only works with lenses with a focal length of 20mm-90mm and you may need an additional filter. But if zeroing in for a creepy shot of a bug's eye or the delicate seed head of a dandelion is your thing, than this lens is definitely worth checking out.By Dan Havlikmore : pdnonline ...

A Canon of excellence
2008-01-05 09:44:00
My Christmas wish came true last week — I got my hands on Canon's professional flagship DSLR (digital single lens reflex) camera. Yes, I'm talking about the highly-anticipated Canon EOS 1Ds MK III.Notwithstanding the whopping price tag of $12,799, this 21.1-megapixel full-frame camera is a stunning piece of digital imaging technology. It sports Canon's latest Dual Digic III imaging processors, dust-reduction Integrated Cleaning System (ICS), high-speed continuous frame rates of up to five frames per second, super-precise 19-point auto-focus (AF) system and 63 metering zones linked to AF points. The camera's weather-resistant magnesium-alloy body is packed with a large three-inch liquid crystal display. However, even the bright-in-all-weather screen could not help in manual focusing, as auto-focus cannot be enabled when using Live View.As a result, I found I preferred using the optical viewfinder, which has 100-per-cent frame coverage, a feature not seen in most current DSLRs in th ...

Sony Alpha 700 Review at digitalkamera.de
2008-01-05 09:22:00
The processing ergonomics and design of the Alpha 700 is something simple and not so striking as the Dynax 7D. Kennzeichnend ist das orange Alpha-Logo, das auf der Kamera prangt. Another feature is the alpha-orange logo, which is emblazoned on the camera. Selbst verpackt im Regal fällt die Kamera auf – der ganze Karton ist in dieser Farbe gehalten. Even packed in shelf falls on the camera - the entire board is in this color. In addition to the "Alpha" character of the Greek alphabet, the orange ring around the Kamerabajonett, in addition, there is a metal ring, the impression as if the camera lenses designed with larger diameter - but belongs to the design, to Sony has a ...

Flash Where You Least Expect It
2008-01-04 16:28:00
Use flash outdoors for effects that keep the spotlight on the natural world.Taking the perfect photograph is like creating the perfect pastrami sandwich: You pile on the pastrami higher and higher, and just when you think it's enough -- you add one more slice. In nature photography, your flash can be that extra slice. It isn't surprising that outdoor shooters often overlook the humble flash. Perhaps it's the abundance of natural sunlight, or fear of the overly artificial look.It wasn't so long ago that I had the same flash aversion, until a little boredom (the true mother of discovery) led me to some experimentation. Before I knew it, foregrounds were popping, shadows became tools for adding depth, and a new style began to emerge in my images. Finally, I had enough slices stacked up for that perfect pastrami sandwich. To get the job done, you need at least one accessory strobe. I use the Canon 580EX Speedlite, which is powerful enough to mimic studio-quality lighting and more than en ...

Sony a700 DSLR: Review
2008-01-04 16:13:00
Japanese consumer electronics giant Sony picked up the pieces of Konica Minolta's camera division almost exactly two years ago. The most obvious result of this combination of Konica Minolta digital photo smarts and Sony muscle is the Alpha DSLR range. The Sony DSLR-A700 is only the second model in this range - building on the success of the A100 launched in late 2006.The Alpha system retains the Minolta lens mount, which not only gives the Sony DSLR range an ever-expanding range of new lenses, but a wealth of second-hand Minolta flashguns and optics too (essentially, every autofocus Minolta SLR lens made in the last 20 years will work with the Sony DSLR-A700 and the A100).That Minolta-isation extends to the body shape itself, with the Sony Alpha range having a strong similarity to Minolta SLR and DSLR designs. Depending on your viewpoint, this makes the camera seem like an old friend, or a chunky and boxy plastic over magnesium Klingon battlecruiser. If nothing else, it invites strong ...

Panasonic L10 review
2008-01-04 15:49:00
Panasonic L10 review : Panasonic carefully made a start with their first digital SLR camera. The L1 was mainly meant to gain some experience in this class and to establish a name as DSLR supplier. No high production figures were expected and the L1 found itself in the top segment straight away. The second digital SLR camera Panasonic introduced, the L10, is a lot less modest. The appearance might have become more conservative, but that is only the cover of what may be looked upon as a real revolution. Panasonic is redefining the DSLR with the Lumix L10. At the time the L1 got introduced, together with the Olympus E-330, we were somewhat scornful about the Live View function. • Read our complete Panasonic L10 review!Dennis Hissinkmore : letsgodigital ...

Olympus Zuiko Digital 70-300mm Field Test
2008-01-03 11:39:00
Let me start by saying a couple of things.Number 1…I don’t tend to take photos of brick walls, bank notes, or test targets. I can understand why some people feel the need to scrutinize over the performance offered by their equipment. Photography is an expensive hobby. However I’m a little more laid back than some…so I tend to take my new purchase into the wilds and shoot what I normally shoot. If I’m happy with the results then I tend to be happy with my purchase. With that said, I think of this article as a field test rather than a true review.Number 2…I am a big fan of the 1st generation Zuiko 40-150mm. It does have some warts. I’ve said before that photographing birds-in-flight with this lens is like bringing a knife to a gunfight. It will work…but it’s not the most practical tool for the job. Yet I actually really like the lens because of all the things it does well. It’s cheap. It’s light. It is compact enough to slip into the pocket of my photo jacket. It is ...

Nikon D40x DSLR Review
2008-01-03 11:20:00
Introduction: Announced on the 6th of March 2007, the Nikon D40x is Nikon's entry level 10 megapixel Digital SLR, it features a 2.5" screen, a 3x optical zoom Nikon kit lens, 3fps shooting, a heap of user friendly shooting modes, and a compact body. The Nikon D40x is available from around £396 with a 3x optical zoom kit lens, this makes it very good value for money, as one of the cheapest 10 megapixel Digital SLRs. The camera is enclosed in a sturdy body and is available in black. The body is small, almost as small as the Olympus E-410, and measures approx. 126 x 64 x 94mm (without protruding parts), and weighs approx. 495g. excluding battery and memory card. Nikon have this to say about the camera:"The D40X is a lightweight and portable camera that proves that it can be both incredibly simple and tremendous fun to shoot images with a Nikon digital SLR. You only need to turn on the camera’s AUTO mode, look through the clear, bright viewfinder and shoot. The D40X responds fast so y ...

Canon 1D Mark III Review
2008-01-03 11:07:00
Welcome to my Canon 1D Mark III review.I’ve been the owner of a 1D Mk3 since early December 2007 and this review comes about a month in after many thousands of actuations. For those of you who are not familiar with my background, I have shot Canon for some time now (having transitioned over from Nikon) and shoot a variety of subjects including sports, portraiture, street and what I call narrative photography. For examples of my work, you can click on the galleries to the left (or simply follow this review). The Canon 1D Mark III has had quite a ride. Released as part of Canon’s 20 year EOS anniversary strategy it was both highly anticipated and widely applauded when it was announced. From the outset it has arguably generated more noise (of the vocal kind) than any other camera in the market today, with the possibly exception of the Nikon D3. Leading the emotionally charged opinions on the camera have been photographers from all walks - some highly respected professionals, some skill ...

Three
2008-01-03 11:01:00
Competition DetailsThere's never a bus when you want one, then three come along at once. And talking of three, it's not only the product number of our prize camera this month, but also the theme of the competition. The possibilities for the number three are pretty endless so we want to see your creative juices flow.In mathematics, the number three is really boring, but it crops up everywhere in world cultures. For example, three is a lucky number in Chinese culture, while the Vietnamese consider it unlucky to take a picture with three people in it.You may want to just show objects that have three of something such as pyramids or tricycles. What about observational humour, such as buses arriving in threes or third time lucky? You could look at telephone or keyboard keys, three blind mice, the number three in religion or any other version of the theme that you see fit. As long as we can see a reference to it in the picture you're in with a chance. If you take a surreal angle and it's ...
