Sony Unveils Alpha 200 SLR
2008-01-07 11:21:00
At the 2008 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas NV, Sony introduced the successor to its Alpha 100 digital SLR. The Alpha 200 has a more compact body and a slightly larger 2.7-inch LCD, new firmware, and a top light-sensitivity setting of ISO 3200 instead of the Alpha 100’s ISO 1600. Sony also says it offers improved optical image stabilization algorithms, an autofocus speed that is 1.7 times faster than the Alpha 100’s, improved image-noise control, and a quieter shutter. The new camera’s battery system provides a percentage-remaining readout as well. To achieve the Alpha 200’s more compact design, Sony removed a top-mounted control dial that provided direct access to several frequently used settings. Fortunately, the designers added a dedicated ISO button to preserve quick access to that setting, as well as a function-menu button for efficient adjustment to other frequently used controls. Sony Announces A200 DSLR
2008-01-07 11:00:00
Sony has announced the third DSLR in its Alpha range, the A200.The model replaces the A100 and is said to 'feature upgrades influenced by the A700' launched last year. It is also said to be 'faster, lighter and easier to use' than the A100.Like the A100, the new model utilises an APS-sized CCD sensor, but ups the effective pixel count to 10.2MP. The resolution of the LCD screen remains at 230,000pixels, but sees a slight increase to 2.7 inches, while a Bionz engine handles image processing – also claiming to reduce noise in Raw images before converting them to JPEG files. As was the case in the company's previous two models, Super SteadyShot image stabilisation claims to allow shutter speeds up to 3.5 steps slower than would usually be possible, and is complimented by Sony's D-Range Optimiser (DRO). Local photographer focused on furthering career
2008-01-06 11:05:00
Saskatoon photographer Chad Coombs's images serve as peepholes into the manic fantasy world in which he lives. The surreal view is enough to leave a psychologist begging for mercy. Good or bad, the goal is to elicit a reaction from the observer, he insists."I'm just a guy and his camera, trying to show people what I see, trying to disturb, make you think and feel," Coombs, 25, explained in a recent interview in his apartment.Like his mind, his suite is a place where the limitations of reality can't constrain his imagination. The ceiling in one bedroom is concealed in Astroturf, while wispy cloud-like carpeting is spread across the floor."They (images) are like dreams: They can be interpreted in millions of different ways. So step into my head, read my consciousness and watch my inner thoughts. Not everyday is great and not every day is bad. This is just my world."Lately, there's been some notable voyeurs and Coombs is beginning to reap global recognition. His work is in two U.K.-base ...

Kingston 8GB Ultimate 266x CompactFlash Card Review
2008-01-06 11:02:00
With Digital SLR cameras coming down in price, many consumers are looking at these cameras versus the old point and shoot style. Many of the new digital SLR cameras don't come with a memory card, so consumers purchasing a SLR camera will also need to pick up a memory card. Canon and Nikon are the leaders in the digital SLR camera revolution and both use CompactFlash memory cards in the majority of their high-end cameras. All Canon digital SLR cameras use Compact Flash, as do select Nikon cameras like the D200 and D300. Legit Reviews recently picked up the Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi, which is a 10.1 Megapixel camera that could be found for under $500 just before the holiday season. Upgrading from a 5 Megapixel point and shoot camera from 2004 (Canon Powershot S60) to a 10.1 Megapixel digital SLR camera was a big change and the need for a larger memory card was a must.Nathan Kirschmore : legitreviews ...

Canon, Nikon want 'friendly rivalry' to spur camera market
2008-01-06 10:56:00
Canon Inc. and Nikon Corp. want to move their digital single-lens reflex camera businesses onto a path of higher sustained growth through friendly rivalry, despite their neck-and-neck race for No. 1 in the world ahead of next year's Beijing Olympics, the companies' presidents said in recent interviews."Technology will not improve if there is only one leading company," Canon President Tsuneji Uchida said at the company's Tokyo head office Dec. 14.Nikon President Michio Kariya said in a separate interview Dec. 13 his Tokyo-based company has no intention of competing head-on with Canon in the fast-growing global market for digital SLR cameras.Noting that the corporate size of Nikon is much smaller than Canon's, Kariya said his company thinks it is important to offer new types of cameras to consumers when its chief rival does not, instead of waging battles with similarly priced products around the same time.As a matter of course, new models should be high quality, he said, but added th ...

Single-lens reflex cameras
2008-01-06 10:51:00
Little silver pocket cameras are small and cheap, they take movies, and they don't turn you into a tourist cliché by dangling from your neck. But those big, black digital single-lens reflex cameras take much better photos, thanks to a much larger light sensor and vastly superior light sensitivity. They also offer gorgeous, soft-focus backgrounds, zero startup time, no shutter lag, impressive burst modes of several shots per second, twice the battery life and interchangeable lenses.Last year was a big year for SLRs. New players like Sony and Panasonic entered the market. Prices dropped to new lows - you can get an excellent starter model for under $475. And as the year ended, four new semi-pro models debuted, defining a new midrange category ($1,300 to $1,800) almost overnight: the Nikon D300, Canon 40D, Sony A700 and Olympus E3. Thanks to the technology trickle-down effect, they offer many features from $5,000 professional SLR models at a fraction of the price. These cameras make you u ...

Nikon D3 and D300
2008-01-06 10:18:00
Nikon's Latest DSLRs,anda Biased Evaluation of The DifferencesBetween the Nikon and Canon BrandsThere are two major brands of 35mm camera in the pro and prosumer camera market – Canon and Nikon. Yes, Pentax, Sony, Olympus and a couple of others have their niches, but Nikon and Canon between them share the majority of the marketplace. Both companies have loaner and rapid repair programs for pros, and rental houses around the world typically carry bodies and lenses of both brands, while rental facilities for the other brands are almost nonexistent.Economics being what it is, few photographers own both systems at the same time. A couple of bodies and a selection of pro-grade lenses runs between $10-$20,000, and once a decision and investment has been made few bother to switch, or if they do so it isn't more often than every decade or two. Also, brand loyalty comes into play because no one likes admitting that they may have made an inappropriate buying decision. We see this carried to ...
