Lowepro Voyager C Camera Strap Review
2008-01-15 02:07:00
From an ergonomics standpoint, the most important aspect of any camera kit in my view is often the most overlooked: the strap. Shooting on a week-long vacation with a camera that's less than perfect in hand is usually a minor irritation at worst. In the same situation, however, a large camera on a thin, coarse strap can make an impression (both mentally and physically) that won't soon leave you. For larger, heavier cameras that don't fit neatly into a purse or pocket – DSLRs and ultra-zooms, primarily – having a comfortable way to tote the camera while keeping it close at hand for grabbing quick shots is often a must. For smaller cameras or less serious shooters, the strap that came with your camera may be sufficient, but if you've found yourself thinking, "This thing shouldn't be this uncomfortable," you're not alone.Enter Lowepro's flagship Voyager C, a thick, padded neoprene unit with about as many bells and whistles as you can put into a camera strap. For an accessory th ...

Olympus E-3: First Thoughts
2008-01-15 01:52:00
Nikon and Canon have dominated the professional DSLR market since the beginning of the digital revolution, effectively condemning Olympus, Pentax, Panasonic, Leica, and Sony DSLRs to second tier status. That's too bad because there are some really exciting and very pro-capable digital SLRs on that second tier, including the new Olympus E-3.It's a popular fallacy that professional photographers (and serious amateur shooters) need system cameras. The standard argument goes that second tier manufacturers like Olympus, Panasonic, Sigma, Leica, and Pentax can't produce cameras that are tough enough to stand up to the rigors of pro use. Other common complaints are that second tier camera manufacturers don't offer a wide enough selection of high quality lenses to cover the needs of professionals, that their professional product development is appreciably slower and less comprehensive than the majors, and that their pro support networks, when compared to Canon and Nikon, are much less effe ...

Nikon vs. Canon debate: a reasoned defense
2008-01-13 06:35:00
Among camera pros, the “Canon vs. Nikon” debate is as eternal and as heated any Mac vs. PC smackdown. And, with Nikon’s release of the D3 and D300 D-SLRs, the war of words has picked up with renewed frenzy. If you’re passionate about this, it’s easy to be drawn into the discussion at an emotional level and lose perspective, but there are some rational voices adding to the mix. One of them is Michael Reichmann, a professional photojournalist who also runs the excellent Luminous Landscape site. He has just posted a lengthy and very well-written review of the Nikon D-SLRs. Subtitled “a Biased Evaluation of The Differences Between the Nikon and Canon Brands,” Reichmann talks more about usability, functionality and flexibility than he does about image quality, because, for many photographers, those are the important things when you’re shooting every day under vastly different conditions. He clearly notes that he's not “switching,” but he does give some serious props to N ...

It said DSLRs would not become a mainstream product in the next two years, as the price is still too high.Beijing-based CCID Consulting was the first domestic consulting firm to be listed in the Growth Enterprise Market of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. Lensbabies Showcases The Original Lensbaby Flexible SLR Camera Lens at Macworld
2008-01-13 06:06:00
San Francisco, CA (January 11, 2008) Macworld Booth W-4725 – Lensbabies, LLC, showcases today The Original Lensbaby, a flexible camera lens that creates a 'sweet spot' area of focus that photographers can move around the image area by bending the flexible lens tubing. The Original Lensbaby brings the imperfect Holga™ look to digital and film SLR photography, but with greater versatility and new effects. While Lensbabies have broad appeal, the unique imagery is particularly attractive to portrait, wedding, product, and fashion photographers. An image created by a Lensbaby lens has a circular area of sharp focus. The photographer can move that in-focus area by bending the flexible lens tubing in any direction. The farther from this sharp area, the greater the blurring and prismatic color distortions. Photographers can control the size of the sharp area and the overall level of blur by using one of four aperture settings: f2.8, f4, f5.6, and f8."The beauty of these lenses is in their ...

Pentax K20D on show at PMA 2008
2008-01-12 14:15:00
Pentax K20D is coming and according to sources will be on display at the PMA 2008 show. The announcement of the 14 megapixel dslr together with the K200 is expected at january 24 2008 in Beijing. The Pentax k20D has a 14 megapixel Pentax proprietary cmos sensor, 2.7 inch screen with live view, revamped anti shake, and it also seems a new file format in addition to the PEF, DNG and jpeg presently in the K10D. We can only assume it may be a uncompressed raw format. The sensor itself is stirring a lot of comments at photo forums. This would be Pentax first sensor, but building a sensor demands huge resources and a foundry. Such an undertaking in secret is very doubtful and most seem to agree that the "Pentax sensor" must be a licensed 3:rd party product.source : stock-photo ...

Get close up with macro photography
2008-01-11 11:58:00
The term "macro photography" confuses many people. It conjures images of large, grandiose photos. In reality, macro shots are closeups of small objects. They're ideal for photographing flowers, insects or collectibles. With macro photography, you see details that are not possible cropping and enlarging portions of regular pictures. Many point-and-shoot cameras tout macro abilities. You can try those cameras' macro settings but they don't provide true macro reproduction. For better results, use a digital SLR.There are many ways to achieve macro photographs. A special macro lens is your best bet. These lenses have a 1:1 magnification ratio. That means the object is the same size on the digital camera's image sensor as in real life.In rare cases, you'll see a lens with a magnification ratio like 2:1. That means the image appears twice as large on the sensor as in real life. But magnification ratios like 1:3 are more common. That means the item being photographed is three times larger ...

Big two' continue to dominate Japan
2008-01-11 11:54:00
Nikon is expected to be Japan's DSLR market leader for 2007 says a leading Japanese market research company. But Canon's compact sales ensure it retains the top-spot for overall digital camera sales in the country. DSLR sales are expected to continue to grow as more manufacturers join the fray.Nikon and Canon share the spoils of Japanese camera marketTokyo-based BCN said that, having captured 43.3% of Japan's DSLR market between January and November, it expects Nikon to hold on to the top spot once December's sales have been calculated. Despite the successful launch of the 40D, BCN's research suggests that Canon will not be able to overcome its second place, having secured a 39.9% market share up to November. Pentax were positioned third, having taken 6.3% of the market to November.more : dpreview ...
