Pentax K20D photo gallery
2008-02-06 12:54:00
Pentax K20D test photos : After the press conference in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, I was able to take the new Pentax K20D with me into the desert and the environment of Dubai. Although the new K20D DSLR was a pre-production model we are able to publish the first test shots. Keep in mind that the firmware was not final so the image quality should be judged accordingly. Unfortunately due to an unexpected visit of President Bush to Dubai some of the planned events had to be cancelled. Thanks to a flexible organization we had some time to visit last-minute locations. One thing was impossible to influence, the weather conditions. Instead of sunny weather we had cloudy and rainy forecasts. The Pentax K20 D has an estimate price of EUR 1299 (kit).Pentax K20D photo galleryAt the heart of the camera is a CMOS sensor with an effective resolution of 14.6 megapixels with extremely low noise characteristics. A further new development is Pixel mapping that interpolates failed pixels, avoiding dist ...

Nikon D3: Review
2008-02-06 12:33:00
Alive with technologyYou can read the detailed spec sheet in forensic detail if you like, but the short version is if you think there's a DSLR feature worth having, the Nikon D3 has it (with a couple of key exceptions). Live View for example; digital compact cameras have had it since for as long as there have been digital compact cameras. Even bridge cameras have Live View... but the technology is hard to implement on a DSLR because of the mirror box inherent to the design. The Nikon D3, however, incorporates Live View. This isn't a new feature on DSLR - Olympus and Fuji got there first and it's now the 'must have' feature on most new DSLRs. However, it's generally only useful on a tripod, because it often disables focusing modes. The D3 has two different modes for Live View - tripod and handheld - that use different focusing systems. You have the choice of the regular 51 point autofocus system used in regular TTL viewfinder work, or tripod style live view mode. You can use contra ...
Nikon answers with D60
2008-02-06 12:29:00
HOT on the heels of Canon’s low-end DSLR announcement (see In.Tech, Jan 29), Nikon has answered the challenge with its D60, the latest in the company’s budget range of DSLRs. In terms of design, the D60 looks much like its younger sibling, the D40x, and even shares the same 10.2-megapixel image sensor. However, underneath its svelte exterior, Nikon has enhanced both the software and hardware to bring it up to speed with the rest of its newer models. The most interesting hardware feature is that the D60 has a completely new dust reduction system – not only does it have the “sensor shake” mechanism to shake of stray dust particles that have landed on the sensor’s protective filter, but Nikon has also integrated an “Airflow Control System” which channels air (and dust) away from the image sensor when the shutter is opened. Taking a page from DSLRs by Canon and Sony, Nikon has also integrated an eye sensor near the viewfinder so that the information display on the LCD will ...
Sony Alpha DSLR-A200 - full review
2008-02-06 12:23:00
The Alpha A200 is Sony’s new entry-level DSLR and the successor to its debut model, the best-selling Alpha A100. It features the same 10.2 Megapixel CCD sensor as its predecessor, but squeezes it into a smaller and lighter body; there’s still room though for the built-in stabilisation to counteract camera shake. Sony’s also increased the sensitivity to 3200 ISO, accelerated the AF by 1.7 times, enlarged the screen to 2.7in and employed an InfoLithium battery for accurate feedback. Today though the entry-level DSLR market has never been tougher, so to see how the latest Alpha compares against its predecessor and the current crop of rivals, check out our Sony A200 review, and for a demo of its features, see our Sony A200 video tour.more : cameralabs ...

Leica D Vario-Elmar 14-150mm/F3.5-5.6 ASPH./MEGA O.I.S. Lens
2008-02-06 12:09:00
Panasonic's new Leica D Vario-Elmar 14-150mm lens was announced at the end of August 2007 but has only recently become available locally. Although designed by Leica, it is fitted with Panasonic's Mega O.I.S. optical image stabiliser and Venus Engine LSI microprocessor. Developed for the company's Four Thirds System DSLR cameras, it is the first Leica D lens to extend to the equivalent to 300mm in 35mm format.Optical construction is complex, with 15 lens elements arranged in 11 groups. Four aspherical elements are included to reduce size and weight and minimise distortion. One of the aspherical lenses is a large-diameter 30mm concave-meniscus lens, which is difficult to mass-produce with conventional glass moulding press methods. An additional ED (Extra-low Dispersion) lens suppresses chromatic aberration. The lens surfaces are multi-coated to minimise flare and ghosting. The new lens is the first Leica D lens to incorporate Extra Silent (XS) technology for driving the autofocusing mo ...
Nikon D3 and ISO examples
2008-02-06 12:03:00
In anticipation of our upcoming in-depth review, Professional Photographer provides you with notes from our Nikon D3 reviewer Ellis Vener on its most notable features and functions that made a big impression. IMPRESSIVEThis is Nikon’s first full frame (24x36mm format) D-SLR—no crop factor. Nikon calls this format FX. While the resolution is only 12.1 megapixels, roughly equal to the resolution of the Nikon D300, the larger physical area allows Nikon to employ a second layer of micro lenses to really focus the light down into the pixel wells resulting in: • More clear resolution of fine detail than I’ve seen out of other 12 megapixel format cameras.• Large dynamic range when using the 14-bit per channel NEF format, especially in the highlights, about one and a half stops over the D2X. (This is also a result of the EXPEED processor technology implemented in the D3.)• Very low noise at high ISO settings, about two to four times the quality of the D2Xs.• Much greater resolut ...

Samsung GX-20 diverges more than expected from K20D sibling
2008-02-01 08:22:00
After a few minutes of hands-on time with both the new Samsung GX-20 and its technological counterpart, the Pentax K20D, it was surprising to see not how much the two devices have in common, but how much they differ. Previous Samsung DSLRs have been, for the most part, straight-up Pentax rebrands, but with Samsung looking to assert itself more dominantly in the digital camera market – they've made known their intention to become the number three player in digital cameras, an outrageously aggressive goal in the current environment – the GX-20 provides a somewhat different shooting experience from that of the K20D. Visually, the two cameras remain quite similar, with the Samsung sporting a slightly smaller, slightly more rounded body all around. Most of the substantive differences, however, are focused on the user interface, where Samsung's expertise in consumer electronics generally benefits the GX-20. Sony DSLR-A200 Review
2008-02-01 08:04:00
Sony's new DSLR-A200 model replaces the A100 and is targeted at entry-level buyers, for whom it provides all the functions a keen photographer requires. Most of the features that were introduced with the A100 model are provided, including the 10.2-megapixel sensor. However, many have been upgraded or enhanced to make the new model a more Sony-like product. Live view shooting is not supported. Marginally smaller and lighter than the A100, it comes to the market as a twin lens kit at a significantly lower price than the earlier model fetched when it was launched. The polycarbonate body looks and feels a little plasticky but is nonetheless solidly constructed and the battery, card and port covers on the test camera fitted securely. Some significant changes have been made to body design and control layout to make the new model easier for novices to operate. The mode dial on the top panel has been shifted to the left side of the penta-mirror housing, where it replaces the A100's function ...

Nikon D60 Digital SLR Test: Sample Image Gallery
2008-02-01 07:49:00
We have had the opportunity to briefly test the Nikon D60 with the new AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G Vibration Reduction (VR) kit lens. We have published a few sample images taken with a Nikon D60 (Firmware A 1:00, B 1:00) under a range of ISO sensitivity settings and exploring some of the available options on the camera.Featuring the identical overall body design to the Nikon D40x, the controls and menus on the Nikon D60 are equally well laid out and easily accessible making for user friendly operation. In most situations the Nikon D60 can be left in automatic / default modes with confidence. Ideal for more novice users. For those that desire more creative control the Nikon D60 offers custom options for setting exposure, image processing and autofocus modes. The Nikon D60 Retouch Menu is also a handy feature that allows for some convenient quick edits in camera (same as the Nikon D40X and D80, although now includes option for in-camera NEF / RAW conversion and adjustments).Fro ...
