2007-09-01 06:00:00
Sometime in June 2007, recruiting 21,880 torchbearers for the 2008 Olympic torch relay started. 19,400 torchbearers will come from mainland China. The oldest among the applicants was Cao Zuozheng. Cao, a 103-year old Beijing native came up with the idea in 2004 when she had a photo taken of her with a Chinese torchbearer for the Athens Games. She waited three hours in her wheelchair on the roadside to watch the relay in Beijing. To get physically fit, Cao started exercising in 2004, walking about 300 meters twice a day with a stick. She also insists on washing her hair with cold water, which she says keeps her healthy. During the last week of last month, the 103-year-old Beijinger, the only candidate from her residential community, was recommended to Beijing's Dongcheng District authority. Her family had kept their fingers crossed that Cao could become the oldest ever torchbearers selected across the world.Unfortunately, authorities turned down her application because of obvious heal ...

Beijing 2008 Olympics - Why August 8, 2008?
2007-08-31 15:10:00
Not a lot of people ever thought about this but there is a very neat significance why the Chinese chose August 8, 2008 to start next year's Beijing 2008 Olympic games. The number 8 appears three times in the date 8-8-2008, is considered very lucky in Chinese culture & traditions. In China, some people have to pay some certain dough in order to have the number 8 in their phone numbers, addresses, car plates & so on. The number 8 is significant in China because it's pronunciation in Cantonese is very similar to "make money".The number 8 written in ChineseThe Chinese, probably more than anybody else, are betting on hauling the most gold medals next year especially since they will be the host country. Funny as it seems, even with our high-tech society, one of the world's economic & military super powers still rely on superstitions to bring them luck. Here are some good reads about the Chinese & the number 8:The Number Eight And The ChineseIn Chinese communities around the world, ...

There were already 2 phases of Tickets selling. The first one was back in April 30, 2007 and the most recent was in June 30, 2007. Local Beijing residents accounted for the majority of ticket buyers back in April. Almost a quarter of tickets available for purchase were sold by April 2007. CCTV Building Beijing -The most expensive building in the world
2007-08-27 03:07:00
CCTV Building Beijing ChinaIn a lot of different ways, The CCTV building in Beijing, China is "the most." Costing $800 Million dollars to build, it is the most expensive building in the world. It is the most radically shaped building designed so far. For the architects & builders, it is the most technically challenging project of their lives. For a Socialist country, China sure is spending a lot for a single building supposedly for the Beijing 2008 Olympics next year though this building is not in any way a venue for sports competition. The building shaped like a letter z for others while some see it as 2 L's attached, is actually bulit by erecting 2 inverted L-shaped towers which meets the ends up several stories high. A techinal marvel that would rival the soon to be tallest building being constructed in Dubai, UAE. The construction has met a lot of hitches as there are people complaining about the cost of buiding the structure just for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Nevertheless, the CC ...
