At Least Mrs. Yastrzemski Didn't Use It: Sex Product Steals Nickname of Hall of Famer
2007-10-03 10:14:00
Language is a living thing and words can have different meanings to different generations. The newest of these words is Yaz. To middle-aged men this means baseball player Carl Yastrzemski but to 20-somethings it is now the name of a birth-control pill.
There's an old joke about the woman who marries a Polish man and how she got something long and hard on her wedding night. The punch line, of ...

Milwaukee Misses Mark in Banning Bernie Brewer's Beer Mug
2007-10-02 21:45:00
Brian's initial column takes on Milwaukee's ban of Bernie Brewer.
If you ask people outside of Wisconsin (and perhaps many Wisconsinites) for an association for Milwaukee, perhaps the most common answer would be beer. After all, Milwaukee is home to many breweries, most famously Miller. That is unless you are a fan of Schlitz, which proclaimed itself, “The beer that made Milwaukee famous.” ...

Here is the latest column. Also, sorry the postings have been a bit sparse but my day job is too damn busy! I will hopefully pick up the pace soon at least until the end of the World Series. ...

Down the Stretch They Come...
2007-10-01 08:01:00
Coming down the homestretch in my high stakes league, it all came down to Friday's games.
Though the baseball regular season ends tonight (Monday, and how about those Rockies!) for me in my high stakes league it all came down to Friday night. My closest challenger, who is a good pal a tough owner and even posted a guest post here on the blog, had four starters going Friday night.

Where did the Dodgers Go Wrong?
2007-09-26 07:47:00
The Dodgers had the second highest expected winning percentage in the NL West and had no chance at the playoffs. What happened?
Following up on my prior post about the Postseason Odds Report, I wanted to take a closer look at at where the Dodgers could have made a big difference. I think it comes down to James Loney and Matt Kemp.
Loney vs. Garciaparra
The first case is Loney versus ...

Looking for More Contributors and A Reflection on the Past Year
2007-09-25 08:11:00
Some thanks to those who helped us out this first year. We are hoping to expand next year also, so read on.
We had a very surprising first year this year (at least in my mind), and thanks goes to all of our readers. We had over 15,000 visits, and even got linked in the Boston Globe online as well as lots of other baseball and sports related sites. I can honestly say that I never thought we ...

Chances of Making the Postseason from Baseball Prospectus
2007-09-24 07:42:00
Some interesting notes from the Baseball Prospectus Postseason Odds Report.
With one week to go in the baseball season there isn't much left to do for the fantasy owner other than to sit back and let the chips fall where they may. I will be posting on some post-mortems for my teams and thinking about next year in the offseason. But for now there isn't much to do.
So, I was looking at a very ...

Thoughts on Alex Gordon
2007-09-21 08:06:00
Some thoughts on his rookie year, and whether owners should be concerned.
Is there anyone in the fantasy world who wasn't high on Alex Gordon coming into this year? Last year in my high stakes league I auctioned him for $5, and was able to trade him for Justin Morneau in the midseason as his speculative value was so high. That trade sure worked out for me.
I was reviewing pre-season ...

A Keeper Question--Ryan Braun vs. Miguel Cabrera
2007-09-19 08:53:00
My response to a question posed on a recent podcast--who would you rather have in 2008, Braun or Cabrera?
In a recent podcast, someone posed a theoretical question. Assuming you had to pick either Braun or Miguel Cabrera for 2008, who do you choose?
This is about the easiest question to answer, surprisingly, and about the answer I believe there cannot be the slightest doubt among reasonable ...

Making Oneself Unassailable--The Power of a Defense-First Strategy
2007-09-18 08:29:00
Analysis of my final trade in the high stakes league.
My penultimate trade for Rafael Furcal worked out like a charm. For my opponents that is. As the league stood now, I was at approximately 150 points in the AL and about 130 in the NL. I still had a 30 point lead at the time, but strongly felt my position was weak.
After the failure of the Furcal trade, and David Ortiz' power outage I ...

What Happened to Derek Jeter?
2007-09-17 08:03:00
Jeter is about to finish up arguably his worst season. What happened?
A superficial look at Derek Jeter's overall stats makes it appear that this season is on the low side of his career norms, but not terrible. After all, how bad can a guy be if he bats .314/.385/.431?
By more advanced metrics though this may be Jeter's worst season. According to Baseball Prospectus' BRAR and BRAA metrics, ...

The 1971 Wild Card-Jeremy has More Love for the Pirates
2007-09-16 18:03:00
Jeremy Looks at the 1871 season
1971
American League - #1 Baltimore vs. #4 Kansas City; #2 Oakland vs. #3 Detroit
Orioles – For the third straight year, the Orioles won over 100 games and were the class of the American League. This was possibly the best overall team of all three and they eventually lost to the Pirates in the World Series. They had three players hit over 20 HR, led by Frank ...

The Yankees Win The Wild Card. But in 1970?
2007-09-13 07:19:00
What if the Wild card Existed in 1970?
1970
American League - #1 Baltimore vs. #4 Oakland ; #2 Minnesota vs. #3 New York
Orioles – Earl Weaver’s club returned with 108 wins and the division crown, en route to the championship. What did they have going for them? Eight guys with double digits in HR – the whole lineup minus Mark Belanger, led by 35 from Boog Powell. Merv Rettenmund hit .322 ...
