Steeler Nation, a Missing Smile and Ads
2007-09-30 21:16:01
This is my first blog. Welcome to it. I’m writing from bright and sunny Orange County, California, thousands of miles away from my hometown, but, believe it or not, surrounded by Steeler fans. Well, at least a few. When my girlfriend and I moved here, we had two primary concerns. One, where would we watch the Steelers smash the Brown, tear apart the Pats, shut down Payton Manning, etc.? And, two, would we be able to find other Steeler’s fans to cheer them on to another Super Bowl victory? Enter Jim and Marsha, our neighbors. It just so happens that Marsha is from Greensburg, and she and Jim are rabid fans. They happen to have Direct TV and a beautiful Sony flat-screen television. Score. We bring the snacks and they let us watch the game. Good company and proof that the Steeler Nation lives and breathes in OC. Though California is now my home, pieces of my heart remain in Pittsburgh. So it’s a little sad that the first game I write about ends in a loss for t ...

Not a Good Way to Spend a Sunday Afternoon
2007-09-30 19:11:23
It had to happen sooner or later. As hard as it is to accept, we all knew the Steelers would eventually end up on the short end of the score. Too bad it was today. I’m new here, not to the area, but to this blog. I haven’t even completed my profile yet, but will soon. I wanted to get something written while things were still fresh in my mind. I’m one of those female football fans that were the talk of the town a week or so ago. I’ve been following the Steelers since the glory years, when I was exiled to Redskins’ territory. Had to move there to find work. The more things change … Anyway, when I retired from the federal government, I worked hard to make the move back to Western PA, where I was born and raised. I moved back in 2004, just in time to somehow inspire a 15-1 season and one for the thumb. I will not take any credit for last year’s performance, however. As one of those female fans, I have to vent about something that either Gumbel ...

Howdy
2007-09-29 12:51:40
Hey, everybody.  How are things?  I pretty excited that the Steelers are 3-0.  I’m even more excited that Mike Tomlin as a head coach is 3-0.  I hope we can keep it up.  There are plenty of fans that are thinking we’re going to pound our way to the Super Bowl this year.  I gotta say, I’m going to be cautiously optimistic about that.  The season just started.  I think we’ll have a great improvement over last year (anything worse would be horrible).  And seeing the playoffs doesn’t seem like an impossible task.  But, like I said, the season is only 3 weeks, and six days, old.  Anything could happen.  I hope they prove me wrong.       ...
Risk vs Reward - Week 4
2007-09-29 05:01:46
Week 2 was a nice turn around. Two out of three ain’t bad. let’s see if I can continue the trend for this week. If you took my advice and started Brandon Jones you got 73 yards receiving including a 35 yard touchdown. If you started Lamont Jordan you got 121 yards rushing and a touchdown. I should of listened to my gut on the Rex Grossman pick as he was horrible again, but at least Lovie Smith has figured it out as well. Ronald Curry - WR Oakland Raiders The quarteback situation in Oakland has changed. Culpepper will get the start against the Dolphins and I look for Curry to be the biggest beneficiary. So far this year Curry has 15 catches for 207 yards and two touchdowns. The Miami secondary is banged up at safety with the loss of Yeremiah Bell. Culpepper has a cannon for an arm and could get the ball deep to Curry if the Raiders can run the ball and set up some play action passing. If your looking at starting a guy like Lee Evans and you have Curry on the bench, you migh ...
No Chance for the Niners…
2007-09-24 15:20:18
Three games into 2007 the Pittsburgh Steelers remain undefeated.  The San Francisco 49ers were the latest team to catch an L at the hands of the Steelers.  The Niners kept it close for a half before the Steelers got serious.  At halftime the score was 14-6 Pittsburgh.  The final score was 37-16. Allen Rossum earned his paycheck this week.  The dangerous return specialist took a kickoff 98 yards early in the first quarter to put The Burgh on the scoreboard.  Rossum seems to have filled the void at returner that the Steelers have struggled to find since the departure of Antwaan Randle-El. Willie Parker rushed for 100 yards for the third time in as many games this season.  Parker actually has run for over 100 yards in his last four games dating back to last season.  Parker ran for 133 yards on 24 attempts.  In case you haven’t heard—this guy is REAL fast.  His running vision seems to be steadily improving as well.  Parker could very well be in the midst of career year this ...
Risk vs Reward - Week 3
2007-09-19 19:57:58
Not a great start. That’s what I’ll call it. Some other terms might be pitiful, horrible, or just plain stupid. I had to set the scale, and a genius isn’t what I’m looking like. But not to worry, if you break it down I wasn’t all wrong, just not right enough. Bernard Berrian did find some receptions and found decent yardage against the Chiefs, but he didn’t score. Deuce McAllister looked good on his part, 10 touches for 49 yards. But coach Payton continued to force the Reggie Bush card and the results were the same, Drew Brees and the rest of the Saints offense suffered. Daunte Culpepper never saw the field, but Josh McCown had a decent game and the Raiders almost upset the Broncos. Close again, but not quite right. The only player’s number I called that produced was James Butler, 5 solo tackles. But this is risk versus reward, let’s see if I can get more of the reward this week. Brandon Jones - WR Tennessee Titans The Saints secondary ha ...
Steelers Start Season Off 2-0
2007-09-17 13:36:48
The Steelers steam rolled Buffalo in week 2. This game was reminiscent to last weeks shellacking of Cleveland. Although this game didn’t get ugly on the scoreboard until the 2nd half, Buffalo was dominated for all 4 quarters. The Steelers meant business as soon as they got the kickoff. Pittsburgh held the ball for 7 minutes on their opening drive. After a 21 yard Willie Parker scamper, and another pair of first downs; Pittsburgh found themselves in field goal territory. Jeff Reed put The Burgh on the scoreboard early with a 34 yard field goal. 3-0 Steelers. Buffalo’s opening drive didn’t go so well for them. Actually, they only had one drive that went well for them all game. This wasn’t it. They were able to generate a first down, but it would be their only first down the entire first half. An incomplete 4th and 2 pass ended their first drive. The Bills did have momentum for a brief second late in the first quarter when Jim Leonard picked off Big Ben; but it was short ...
Fantasy Football - Risk vs Reward
2007-09-13 23:25:48
Each week here on the Steeler Maniacs site I’m gonna hit you with a little fantasy football genius, that is to say I’m a genius if I’m right and just another jerk-off if I’m wrong. But don’t worry, if you take my advice and it works you can claim it for your own. If it doesn’t, you can say you got it form some idiot on the internet! Bernard Berrian - WR Chicago Bears The Bears had an abysmal outing in week one from a fantasy outlook. Adrian Peterson put up practically no yardage without a score and Rex Grossman looked putrid. Not to worry if you have Berrian on your roster. The Bears face Kansas City this week and Herm Edwards ball clubs are notorious for starting the season slow, as witnessed by last weeks game against the Houston Texans where Andre Johnson racked up a little over 140 yds and a TD. Look for Berrian to do the same against a weak Chiefs secondary, and if your worried about Grossman coughing up the ball, relax. The Chiefs have virtually no pass rush and that ...
Steelers Dominate The Browns in the 2007 Season Opener .
2007-09-10 17:30:37
The Pittsburgh Steelers started the 2007 season off properly defeating Cleveland 34-7.  The Steelers dominated Cleveland in every aspect of this game.  The Browns never really had a chance.                                              Pittsburgh scored early and often against the Browns.  Cleveland went 3 and out on their first possession.  Cleveland looked as Brownesque as ever on a 4th down punt in which 4 penalties were called against Cleveland on a single play.  The Steelers first possession began on Cleveland’s 32 yard line.  A couple of plays later Big Ben found Hines Ward in the corner of the end zone.  Ward made an acrobatic catch to give The Burgh an early 7-0 lead.  Cleveland’s next possession didn’t go any better for them.  Deshea Townsend intercepted Charlie Frye and returned the pick 21 yards to the Cleveland 17 yard line.  The Steelers had to settle for 3 this time, as Jeff Reed converted on his first field goal ...
Steeler’s look good in first preseason game of 2007
2007-08-06 15:39:42
Sunday night in Canton Ohio, the Steelers played in the first preseason game of the 2007 NFL season and they performed well in the 20-7 victory over the Saints.  Big Ben was 3 for 73 with a toucdown pass to Cedric Wilson.  Wilson had 99 receiving yards including a 55 yard pass play from Big Ben.  Let’s hope that Ben and Wilson keep the chemistry going into the regular season.  It was strange watching the game and not seeing Bill Cowher on the sideline.  Coach Tomlin looked like he was enjoying his first preseason game as the Steelers head coach and he definately is off to a good start.  The offense this year looks like it will be more wide open under new offensive coordinator Bruce Arians. Troy Polamalu looked like the polamalu that we are used to as he flew around the field with blinding speed.  Let’s hope he stays healthy this year because the defense is not the same ...
Calvin Johnson: The Golden Prospect
2007-07-23 20:32:06
Calvin Johnson is expected to be a top 5 pick and the first receiver taken in the 2007 NFL Draft. Many analysts feel that Georgia Tech wide receiver Calvin Johnson is the best player available, but there’s a good chance he won’t go No. Calvin Johnson is definitely the best receiver in college football now. Calvin Johnson is just plain sick. At 6-foot-5, 235 pounds, wide receiver Calvin Johnson is a handful for smaller defensive backs. Calvin Johnson is the most talented player, in the draft. WR - Calvin Johnson is the best WR prospect to come out in years. Wide Receiver Calvin Johnson is arguably the nation’s top wide receiver, and is certainly one of the most spectacular players college football has to offer. Georgia Tech junior Calvin Johnson is this year’s winner of the Biletnikoff Award as the nation’s top receiver. Georgia Tech’s Calvin Johnson is clearly the top wideout in the game. Calvin Johnson is being touted as a top 3 pick right now. Calv ...
Trent Green - The New Fin in Town
2007-07-23 20:30:57
As the Miami Dolphins gear up for the start of the 2007 NFL season, they find themselves with a new fin in town: Trent Green. The former Kansas City Quarterback was traded to the Dolphins on June 5, 2007. In return, the Dolphins give the Chiefs a conditional fifth round draft pick in next year’s NFL draft: if Trent Green, who suffered a severe concussion keeping him out for half of the season last year, plays more than 70 percent of offensive downs, Miami will render the Chiefs a fourth round draft pick instead of a fifth. Trent Green is now ready to put the Kansas City Chiefs, his concussion, and last season in the past; he has gladly traded in his tomahawk for water wings. Born on July 9, 1970, Green is a product of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. After playing quarterback for Indiana University, he was taken by the San Diego Chargers in the 1993 draft. From here, he bounced around, playing as an NFL backup and in the Canadian Football League. In 1998, he not only found himself starting for th ...
NFL Europe Has Champion XV
2007-07-23 20:29:08
It was a thrilling game of American football played at an out of control pace, as the Hamburg Sea Devils went out to get an early lead and with that they ended the cheering of a highly enthusiastic crowd of 48.125 at the Frankfurt’s Commerzbank Arena. They beat the Frankfurt Galaxy, 37-28, and captured World Bowl XV and the championship of NFL Europa. With the situation the NFL Europe is going through at the moment, the league’s future management in doubt, this well-played struggle in front of an energized arena filled with frantic public might have been the advertisement its brand of football needed. Hamburg won by puzzling Frankfurt’s defense, they succeeded at hitting consecutive big plays. Quarterback Casey Bramlet was the outstanding player. Sent by the Washington Redskins for his second go-round in Europe, Bramlet passed for 347 yards and a World Bowl record four touchdowns as he won the game’s most valuable player award. The Sea Devils searched their stra ...
