The Steelers have yet to beat a good team.
2007-11-18 19:06:21
Pittsburgh(7-3) lost 19-16 in overtime to the lowly New York Jets (2-8). After watching this game it’s hard to imagine a scenario in which Pittsburgh wins the Super Bowl that doesn’t involve the Patriots team plane crashing.
The Cardinals, the Broncos, and now the Jets have beaten the Steelers. It’s a good thing the AFC is terrible this year aside from the Pats, because the Steelers probably wouldn’t make the playoffs otherwise. The offensive line was finally exposed, and the Steelers committed around 100 yards in penalties. 100 yards in penalties. That’s 13 yards less than Thomas Jones rushed for, breaking the Steelers streak of not allowing a 100 yard rusher. I didn’t really like the play calling, perhaps a screen pass or two might have helped off set the Jets rush, and I didn’t like all the draw plays on 3rd and long, but if no one gets blocked it really doesn’t matter what Arians calls. This was a pathetic football game, albeit an exciting one. Now ...

Family vs Football
2007-11-18 13:55:48
Sometimes family trumps football no matter how important the game. That was the case for me last week. I missed nearly the entire Cleveland game because of church and family obligations. I had a meeting at church that ran until kick-off. Then, I had to go pick up my dad and take him to lunch at the great little family-style place we always go to on Sundays, Clementine’s. It’s in Lower Burrell and has the best pies and the nicest people working there. If you are anywhere in the A-K Valley, I highly recommend it.
Anyway, after lunch, dad and I went to see mom, who is in assisted living in Plum. The game was well into the 2nd quarter by this time. We’d only heard a bit of it on the radio and what we’d heard wasn’t good. When we got there, things weren’t good with mom, either. She wasn’t feeling well and needed some help from one of the aides. Dad and I had to wait in the hall while the aide worked with her. When the aide was done, we finally were ...

Three game tune up for New England starts with the Jets
2007-11-16 13:00:09
Before the only game that matters this season, the Steelers face the Jets, Dolphins, and Bengals. Right now, the three teams have a combined 4 wins between them. If the Steelers lose any of there next three games due to reasons other than injury, it will be laughable to claim the Steelers are an elite team. There is no reason the Steelers should lose any of these games, in fact they shouldn’t win by less than 10 points. With the Denver loss marring the Steelers record they have to start bullying the teams that they are supposed to beat. While the Steelers playoff seeding won’t likely be determined by the “points scored” tie breaker, elite teams don’t struggle with bottom feeders like the Jets, Fins, and the Bengals. This is a nice three game tune up for the Pats on Dec. 9th. Let’s hope Pittsburgh gets out of it healthy.
Residue from the Browns game
I hated the call to have Santonio Holmes throw a pass on Pittsburgh’s first possession. The Steelers shouldn’t ...

Rethlisberger overcomes Steelers kickoff coverage, leads Pittsburgh past Cleveland
2007-11-15 01:47:26
The Steelers (7-2) survived early mistakes, overcame terrible kick coverage, and in the processes erased a 15 point deficit for a dramatic come from behind 31-28 victory against the resurgent Browns Reprise (5-4). The win gives the Steelers, in effect, a 3 game lead over Cleveland for first place in the AFC North as Pittsburgh holds the edge in all applicable tie-breakers should the teams finish with identical records.
I wrote earlier that should the Browns beat the Steelers the culprit would be either turnovers or special teams play. (Way to go out on a limb, I know.) In the first half of Sunday’s game the Browns scored off short fields provided by an interception and a 90 yard kick off return by Joshua Cribbs, who did one heck of a Gale Sayers impression last Sunday.
On the Browns first possession they put together an 8 minute 71 yard drive to take a 7-0 lead. The Steelers answer with a field goal. Then Cribbs returned a kickoff to the Steelers 3 and the Browns scored to go ahead ...

Ladies and Gentlemen, Ben Roethlisberger Has Arrived
2007-11-14 21:35:33
by John Cihon
I know that there was some worry about Ben Roethlisberger’s bruised hip that he sustained in the Monday Night Football game against the Baltimore Ravens going into Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Browns, but forget about that. Worry about whether or not his back is sore after pickup up the entire Pittsburgh Steelers team and carrying them to a win despite the Steelers’ lackluster play on both sides of the ball.
And don’t be mistaken, it was lackluster at best. Cleveland had a total of seven sacks the entire season going into the game, and they got four against the Steelers on Sunday. The offensive line has been a weak point for Pittsburgh all year long, and credit Ben’s incredible escapability for not getting sacked more times than he did. Pittsburgh’s defense has been one of the best in the NFL all season, but they gave up three touchdowns to Cleveland in the first half. Ben made more than a couple passes, especially early in the second half, which seem ...

So long, Brownies
2007-11-13 14:11:32
It was the game I thought it would be…a battle. Although, I didn’t think we’d be down so far, so fast. But Ben showed his stuff and pulled it out…by the hairs on their chiny-chin-chins.
Interception watch: up to 7. Up to. This time last year we would have traded half the Heinz ketchup in the Red Zone bottles for that total. And the touchdown total is going to blast apart Terry Bradshaw’s record. I didn’t know Ben hadn’t done that yet. Good for him. And for all of the guys that catch the passes to make it even possible!
On that note, Sunday was not a great day to be a Manning. Woah, Peyton. I know everyone has bad days, but those 6 interceptions (4 in the first half) were a little shocking/surprising. On the other hand, the Colts are 7-2 now…just like us.
7-2, baby! And sitting on top of the AFC North!

Roethlisberger emerging as head of 2004 draft class
2007-11-12 18:07:48
I’ll have a Pulitzer worthy, Browns Steelers recap posted after the Penguins game tonight, first some quick thoughts on Ben Roethlisberger; Yesterday, I watched in succession, Roethlisberger vs. Cleveland, then Eli Manning vs. Dallas, and finally, Phillip Rivers vs. the Colts. There is no question Pittsburgh drafted the best QB in the draft, Ben was a steal at the 11th pick. Were it not for Tom Brady and Randy Moss, Big Ben would probably be the favorite for MVP this season. If the Steelers don’t pay Ben what he’s worth, it will be a crime and I will quit watching NFL football.

Close Call
2007-11-12 15:36:13
For a while this game was scary. Actually it was nightmarish. The first half seemed like a woken bad dream. Cleveland (yeah-The Browns) jumped all over Pittsburgh early in this game. At one point the score was 21-6 Bad Guys. The Steelers struggled to find any rhythm early, and had to rely on Jeff Reed to keep them in the game. However the 2nd half was a completely different story. Final score 31-28 Good Guys.
Big Ben got his legs and arms going in the 2nd half. Roethlisberger connected with both Heath “Ghostface” Miller and Hines Ward for touchdowns. Roethlisberger also scampered down the middle of the field for a 30 yard touchdown which is the longest TD run of his career thus far. Roethlisberger threw for 278 yards and ran for 49 on Sunday. Willie Parker bounced back from his 42 yard performance a week ago with 105 yards on Sunday. Ward led all Pittsburgh receivers with 7 catches for 80 yards.
Despite giving up a deceptive 28 points (more on that later), o ...

Winslow II will not be honored on Veterans Day
2007-11-11 11:19:57
Happy Veterans Day.
Kellen Winslow II will not be honored.
Today perhaps you can play Count the War Analogies during your local telecast, and see how a game is blown out of proportion on a day when the real American heroes are honored.
The only way the Steelers lose today is if they allow a kick return for a touchdown, or if the offense turns the ball over too many times. I was talking to my friend Dan the New England Fan, and he thinks the Steelers have a chance to lose. I obviously argued in favor of Pittsburgh, but he made some good points. In summary, the Steelers lose to teams they should beat (Arizona, Denver), and the Browns will score points. Still, the Browns defense can’t stop the run.
The Pats won’t win today.
Let’s hope the Manic Depressive Kids in San Diego, can beat the emotionally scarred, physically banged-up Colts. If rooting for Brett Favre is like rooting for America, does that mean Vikings fans have now been added to some kind of secret government blackl ...

75th Gala on KDKA
2007-11-10 19:30:57
I just finished watching the 75th Anniversary celebration, or should I say the abbreviated version, on KDKA. Man, wish I could have been there. What a rush seeing all those players together.
Now that the Rat-Birds have had their tail feathers shaken, I’m looking forward to seeing the Browns, darn, there’s no good play on words for that. I’m just hoping that Cleveland plays as poorly tomorrow as they did during the season opener. And, that the team that beat up on the Ravens and the Seahawks comes to play.

Browns Reprise comes to town
2007-11-10 15:40:09
Steelers vs. Browns Reprise
The Browns are better, but still not good enough to beat the Steelers at home. The Steelers have won 14 of their last 15 games versus Cleveland. For all the wizardry Derek Anderson has displayed in conjuring up 17 TD passes and a 5-2 record as a starter, he is still not very mobile and tomorrow he will face a defense that seems rejuvenated after a terrible 31-28 loss to the Broncos back in week 7. This week the Steelers welcome back DE Aaron Smith who was injured in the 1st quarter of the aforementioned embarrassment in Denver. Here is a quote form this week’s Post-Gazette on how D-coordinator Dick LeBeau feels about Aaron Smith,
“He’s very big and very strong,” LeBeau said. “He’s a strong man. And he plays strong.”
Very insightful.
James Harrison is also strong (how’s that for a transition?). Not that anyone cares about my fantasy football team, but I have Harrison as an independent defensive player. Last ...

Brady Quinn provides builliten board material for his own team
2007-11-09 14:44:22
In quite possibly the most worthless gimmick provided by ESPN the Magazine; the back page athlete on athlete interview, Brady Quinn was asked by Cleveland Indian Ryan Garko, “Where would the Browns put a slow, short, fat white guy?’
Quinn’s response, “We’d probably put you at linebacker.”

Welcome to the James Harrison show
2007-11-07 17:28:20
The stage was set. It was the 75th anniversary of the Steelers franchise and many of the heroes from the past were on hand to watch. On hand were Terry Bradshaw, Lynn Swann, Jerome Bettis, Jack Lambert, Mean Joe Green, Jack Ham, John Stallworth, Rocky Blier & more. Even Bill Cowher returned to Heinz Field to celebrate on a night when the hated Ravens came to town. The Steelers were 5-2 with the Ravens and Cleveland staying 1-step behind in the division.
The Steelers got the ball first and it Willie Parker’s first run was for 1-yard. The Ravens defense has always been tough against the run and I figured it was going to be a struggle for Parker. Ben hit Ward for a nice 15 yard pass play that resulted in a 1st down. The Ravens starting corners were inactive due to injuries so the passing game was going to be the key. During the 1st series it was raining so hard that I thought the game was being played in ...

Cleveland fans happy with 5-3 Browns, Baltimore fans want Colts back
2007-11-07 14:12:03
“And the silken sad uncertain rustling of each purple curtain
thrilled me…”
Pittsburgh (6-2) took control of the AFC North with a 38-7 taming of the Baltimore Ravens(4-4) Monday night in Pittsburgh.
The Steelers beat up the Ravens in front of members of the Steelers 75th anniversary team who gathered for a half-time ceremony in their honor. Joey Porter was not in attendance.
Ben Roethlisberger proved he is at least as good as Mark Malone, tying his record for TD passes in a game with five. Roethlisberger was lights out, (13-16 205 yards 5td’s, 0 int.) taking advantage of the great starting field position the Steelers defense provided. On a night when Willie Parker was held to 43 yards rushing on 22 attempts Roethlisberger continued to show the elusiveness that has allowed him to thrive behind an average offensive line this season.
Santonio Holmes and Nate Washington caught two TD’s a piece, and Heath Miller was on the receiving end of what might have been Ben’s most impr ...

Take that, Ratbirds!
2007-11-06 19:25:54
6-2 Baby! What a perfect game for the 75th Anniversary party/Homecoming!
Ben was on fire! And I totally figured when interviewed about the 5 touchdowns he would point out the receivers and o-line and all involved for making them. He’s good and predictable with sharing credit.
I have to say, I had an instant reaction of panic/worry/”oh no!” when Ben took his turn to be on the ground in pain. It seemed like the second half, the fourth quarter in particular, had quite a number of guys not getting up right away/needing assistance, on both sides. I never want anyone, no matter what team, to be hurt more than ice, a bandage, or rest would fix. To think that way would be unkind and bad sportsmanship. Good thoughts/prayers for good healing.
We took perfect advantage of those turnovers and got big points out of them. There was lots of ketchup pouring in the first half!
And how about James Harrison?! It couldn’t have been mentioned more that ...
