Bring Back Porter
2007-11-27 14:52:48
No, I don’t want to get rid of James Harrison.  Harrison is having a spectacular season.  His performance against Baltimore earlier this season was probably enough to get him into the pro bowl single-handedly.  Right now James Harrison is definitely a better (and younger) linebacker than Joey Porter. But we miss Porter.  His days as a football player in Pittsburgh may be over, but he needs to be a Steeler again.  If I were a Rooney, I would hire Joey Peezy as a motivational speaker after he retires.  Remember Matt Foley-the motivational speaker Chris Farley portrayed on Saturday Night Live.  That would be a great role for Porter.  Granted I’m sure that a motivational speakers’ salary wouldn’t compare to what Miami is paying him now, but his signing bonus alone should be able to ensure that he never has to live in a van down by the river. Think about it though…I believe Tomlin is gonna be a great coach, but he is one laid back dude.  Porter on the other hand is a tras ...
Reed’s late field goal the difference in Steelers 3-0 victory
2007-11-26 23:42:59
A win is a win. The Steelers (8-3) beat the Dolphins (0-11) 3-0 in a slop fest that should have been played in the parking lot, or maybe Duquesne University’s IM field. The sod conditions leveled the playing field, literally, against the winless Dolphins. This has to be the last season of natural grass at Heinz field. Bring on the Field Turf. A few things It’s hard to really evaluate much here given the conditions. Joey Porter’s “boot” celebration was mimicked ad-nausea by the Steelers defense. I’m surprised there weren’t more turnovers given the rain. With the win Pittsburgh remains a full game ahead of Cleveland in the AFC North. Add the phrase “in the most atrocious, divot-filled muck on which I’ve ever seen a pro game played” to the end of each of the following sentences. Hines Ward had a great game… Pittsburgh had trouble running in obvious rush situations, but Parker did well over all Joey Porter’s much ballyhooed return to Pittsburgh resulted in the L ...
Just a Reminder. . .
2007-11-26 18:11:25
by John Cihon . . . That if the one-win New York Jets can beat the Steelers, than the no-win Miami Dolphins could beat the Steelers (even though I don’t think they will). These guys are still professionals, after all. Enjoy the game! ...
Dolphins come to town for muddy Monday night game
2007-11-26 12:55:19
it’s rumored Don Johnson has received an offer sheet from the Dolphins It’s pouring rain in Pittsburgh. In the past three days, Heinz field has hosted four high school football games, and a Pitt South Florida gathering that resembled Div. 1 NCAA football for about 30 minutes. The pitch for the contest between the Dolphins and Steelers tonight is not going to be very firm. The last time the Steelers played a Monday night game in the rain, they beat the Baltimore Ravens within an inch of their playoff lives. Roethlisberger threw a career high 5 touchdown passes despite the slick conditions, while James Harrison lead the defense in one the units most inspired and inspiring performances in recent memory. Harrison probably still haunts the Ravens after his 10 tackle, 3.5 sack, 3forced fumble, 1 int. performance. There is a prime time performance by a linebacker that is almost on par to Harrison’s last Monday night game and it came from of Joey Porter, who had 2 sacks, and ret ...
Miami’s Finest Players
2007-11-25 20:39:53
The Miami Dolphins have the obvious Pittsburgh connection with Joey Porter, but he’s not the only one.  2006 NFL Defensive Player of the Year Jason Taylor is from Pittsburgh, and of course one can’t forget about Dan Marino.  As I type this I sit in my house, less than half a mile from both Dan Marino’s childhood home and Dan Marino field. As bad a season as the Dolphins are having, I wanted to find something positive to say about them.  Clearly, the team has problems, but I found one part of the team that has not failed to impress this year: the Miami Dolphins cheerleaders. Today let’s shine a spotlight on Lily.  Lily tells us that since becoming a Miami Dolphins cheerleader, ‘My flexibility is improving because we stretch so much.’  She also tells us that she enjoys going to the beach, just like every other member of the Miami Dolphins cheerleaders say on the team’s website. So Lily, while you’re cheering the team on, let’s take this opportunity to cheer on you ...
Steelers WR’s and other minutia
2007-11-24 15:04:24
for the record, I’m not upset that the Steelers didn’t make a run WR, Mike Williams. However, I don’t think Antonio Bryant is doing anything this Sunday… Just kidding. Speaking of NFL players with a penchant for reefer, with Chatman banged up, it is very possible Ricky Williams will make an appearance this Monday. Ricky Williams is a great example of why we should be happy the Rooneys don’t take chance on players with questionable backgrounds.  Williams had some great years, but I’d say he is less than reliable. It’s been my experience that it’s helpful to know both sides of an argument when making a point, so while I sometimes chide the Steelers shortcomings, and point to off-season moves that hypothetically could have bolstered various trouble spots on this season’s Steelers team, I am very aware of how lucky I am, as a Steelers fan to have a perennial contender to root for every season.  In the grand scheme of things the Roo ...
Sometimes You Just Get Outplayed
2007-11-23 14:48:06
by John Cihon A lot of Pittsburgh Steelers fans are still trying to decide who’s to blame or what decision the coaches could have made to avoid a loss to the New York Jets last week.  I’ve got to tell you guys; sometimes it’s not that easy. ‘But the coaches should have-‘, you say.  I say thee nay!  Sometimes you just get outplayed.  Sometimes you just get your behinds kicked in the trenches.  The offensive line failed.  You cannot strategize around that.  No amount of trickeration can make up for a non-existent offensive line.  You can’t coach a bad player into a good player.  There is no play set that effectively covers up a weak offensive line.  Sean Mahan has been a disappointment all season, no doubt about that, but it’s getting worse.  I believe I saw Alan Faneca attempting to cover his position and cover for Mahan on Sunday, which only resulted in Mahan and Faneca failing to do their jobs, ultimately letting Ben Roethlisberger get sacked seven freaking t ...
Amendment to my all-time Steelers team
2007-11-23 12:37:21
I forgot to add TE’s has Heath Miller played long enough? I say yes. TE: Heath Miller, Eric Green. I’d want Mark Breuner in there for the offensive packages that include Bettis, to block and to pick him up when he was tackled. Merril Hodge would be on the 47 man roster somewhere, he was everything Carey Davis isn’t.  Hodge could catch, block and run. ...
My ‘87-’07 All-Time Steeler’s team?
2007-11-20 18:13:03
Teusday seems like a good day to do this. I’m only including players I remember watching. I was born in 1981, so I’ll go from ‘87-’07. I told my dad I was making up an all-time team from the last 20 years, and he said, “Why bother?”. Of course he was around in the 70’s. Then he added, “I guess you have to give ‘em their due for what they did two years ago.” Feel free to tear this apart, feed back is good QB: Ben Roethlisberger, Tommy Maddox RB: Jerome Bettis, Willie Parker, Barry Foster FB: Dan Kreider WR: Hines Ward, Louis Lipps, Yancy Thigpen, Plaxico Burress OL: Leon Searcy, Alan Faneca, Dermotti Dawson, Carlton Haselrig, Justin Strzelczyk DL: Casey Hampton, Aaron Smith, Joel Steed LB: Gregg Lloyd, Levon Kirkland, James Farrior, Kevin Greene CB: Rod Woodson, Carnell Lake S: Darren Perry, Troy Polamalu (I realize the DB’s are somewhat out of position) KR: Rod Woodson PR: Antwaan Radle EL K: Gary Anderson P: Dan Sepulveda Special teamer: Fred McAfee Coach: Bill C ...
Steely McBeam comes out
2007-11-19 19:54:14
An alleged intern who supposedly works near the Steeler’s South Side training facility claims, McBeam’s absence at recent Steeler’s home games can be attributed to his recent, new found love affair with the 49ers mascot, who has been openly gay since he arrived on the scene in the 80’s. McBeam was never really accepted by the blue collar Pittsburgh fans, who like their beer cold, and their mascots heterosexual. Neither the Pirate Parrot or Pittsburh Penguins mascot Iceberg were available for comment. The two foam rubber men met randomly at a downtown Pittsburgh “gay bar” after the 49ers, Steelers game September, 23rd. They plan on spending the off season in a Vermont cabin, and the regular seasons in San Francisco, which has historically been a far more liberal city, with a more excepting and open minded population than Pittsburgh, which ran African American quarterback Kordell Stewart out of town, after he was allegedly spotted at Schenly Park so ...
Critical thinking and objective analysis are not symptomatic of a half-hearted fan.
2007-11-19 19:01:53
Response to “Patriot Maniacs?” Well thank God you’re back, Tim, and thanks for reading. Now you can write about how great the loss to the 2-8 Jets was, and how there’s nothing to worry about. The Steelers can beat any team in the league, unfortunately it’s become apparent they can also lose to any team in the league. I apologize for my realistic view of the NFL, and for keeping my expectations in check. Clearly that means I’m not really a Steelers fan. Thinking the Steelers will have to play their best, and create turnovers to beat the Pats…I might as well just tattoo Brady’s face on my ass, and try conjure up an arranged marriage between his son and my 3 month old daughter to get those genes intermingled with the Gwin lineage. Oh, wait, I forgot, you don’t understand Irony or sarcasm. I was kidding. If you could grasp sarcasm and irony, and didn’t simply pick out the things I’ve written that you disagree with or don’t want to he ...
Passenger seat my ass
2007-11-19 17:24:27
I wrote this in 2005, in the style of David Foster Wallace Benjamin Joseph Gwin Imitation piece Go Steelers New Year’s and Christmas have passed, but this winter Steeler’s fans have another holiday to celebrate. On February 5th (six weeks after Jesus’ birthday), the Steelers will play the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl XL. When the Steelers earned a spot in the biggest game in professional sports, by beating the Denver Broncos in the AFC Championship game January 22nd, the city of Pittsburgh erupted into a frenzy of civic pride. After watching the Steelers beat the Broncos, at a friend’s South side (Pittsburgh’s bar district) apartment, I ventured out onto Carson Street. and found myself surrounded by fellow Steeler fans waving “Terrible Towels”, singing Super Bowl chants, and high-five-ing[1] the passing motorists(most of whom were honking their horns in sync with the ‘Here we go Steelers’ chants, adding a rhythm section to the night’s slap-hap ...
The Steelers were dominated in the “trenches”
2007-11-19 16:49:41
That was a killer loss to the Jets yesterday. Roethlisberger was unable to pull another victory from the jaws of defeat. It looked like the line thought Arians called twelve consecutive screen passes in the first half. At least Big Ben didn’t throw his offensive line under the bus, the way Peyton Manning did after the Steelers upset the Colts in the 2005, AFC divisional game. The Jets played better than the Steelers in every phase of the game. With the line as terrible as it is, Dan Kreider has to be used more in the running game. The defense bent, but didn’t break and thankfully so, if the Jets had converted any of their 3 field goal drives into touchdowns, the game might not have made it to overtime. The offensive play calling for Pittsburgh was littered with 3rd down draw plays. I thought the 3rd and long draw play left Pittsburgh when Cowher moved down south to wait for a big pay day. After watching the Patriots disembowel the Bills in Buffalo 56-10 on Sunday night, it make ...
Patriot maniacs?
2007-11-19 13:51:08
Been gone for a couple weeks and haven’t had the chance to catch up on things. After reading some of the stuff that’s on this page I’m really disappointed. I guess you could make the argument that some people here are trying to be objective (good luck with that pulitzer). Some people round here would lead you to believe New England can’t be beat. That’s absurd. How many Colts fans thought that on their way to a 14-2 record. The reality is there are probably a few Patriot maniac sites out there, maybe some of you should be posting there. If you want to go on about how great the Pats are it’s your business. If you want to compare Sepulveda to Moss that’s your business (kinda lame don’t ya think). If you want to mother Tom Brady’s next child….. Steeler fans fear not. We are 7-3 with a first year head coach and a brand new offensive coordinator. The defense has played to high level for so long that we have one off game (and it w ...
Admit It
2007-11-19 08:13:46
I’m not the only person who knew that the Steelers would end up collapsing like a cheap folding table loaded with an overstuffed Thanksgiving turkey. From the moment the Jets began to march down the field, I knew it was over. I didn’t even pay much attention to the game. It was just too pitiful to watch. Instead, I kept flipping to Fox to see how the ‘Skins were doing - not too bad, actually. After all, I lived in Redskins territory for 30 years. Some of the madness rubbed off on me. So when my best friend called me one day a few years back to crow about the “second coming”, I knew it was Joe Gibbs, not Jesus, who was returning. Back to Sunday’s game. Where, oh where was the number one ranked defense? Maybe it went to Radio City Music Hall to catch the Rockettes? Or to one of NYC’s famed restaurants for a pre-game meal and got caught in traffic? They must have been joined by the offensive line because Ben had no protection whatsoever. You&rsqu ...
