Lawler, Smith Set For Rematch At EliteXC: Saturday Night Fights 2
2008-06-16 11:56:18
A quality matchup has been assured for July 26 when Brian Lawler and Scott Smith have been tabbed to be on the card of EliteXC: Saturday Night Fights 2, scheduled to be telecast on CBS on July 26; the promotion, despite the rematch announcement, has yet to secure a venue to stage the event.  The previous Lawler-Smith fight ended in controversy after Lawler accidentally poked Smith in the eye; doctors at ringside ruled that Smith couldn’t continue and as a result, the match ended up as a draw.  Lawler (15-4, 1-0 EXC), a former student under Pat Miletich, will carry a 4-fight win streak going into the rematch; He sports wins over former Icon Sport middleweight champion Frank Trigg, Jackson’s Submission Fighting’s Joey Villasenor and UFC welterweight veteran Chris Lytle.  Smith (13-4, 1-0 EXC), on the other hand, has won 3 of his last fights; he made a successful debit in EliteXC with a win over Kyle Noke and also has victories over International Fight League middlew ...
Lutter Downplays Retirement Plans
2008-06-16 08:57:36
Typically if you’re 35 years old and happen to be defeated by a younger opponent, one of the first things that come to mind is retirement talk.  If you’re Travis Lutter, you throw the retirement stuff out of the octagon; according to Tommy Messano of Sherdog.com, Lutter, instead of contemplating retirement, is looking to take stock of his current health and improve his staying power in the octagon.  What Lutter is doing isn’t what your typical MMA fighter would do in a similar scenario; specifically, he is utilizing the services of the medical department of the University of Texas-Arlington in order to get his body back unto peak fighting condition. According to Lutter, “I came back from the fight and went back to training jiu-jitsu.  I got to talking with a doctor at the University of Texas at Arlington.  He ran some tests on me: an oxygen test and the lactate acid threshold test, just to see how good of shape (I’m) in and where (I’m) at.&rdq ...
Cole Charged With Rape
2008-06-16 08:33:36
In an unfortunate event in the MMA world, according to Sherdog.com, International Fight League veteran Devin Cole was arrested by the Medford (Oregon) Police Department at 7:40 AM Saturday; Cole, 31, was charged with first-degree rape, 2 counts of first-degree sodomy and 2 counts of first-degree sexual penetration and is currently being held at the Jackson County Jail.  He is being held on - get this - $5,000,000 bail. Cole had competed for the IFL’s Portland Wolfpack and Seattle Tiger Sharks, sporting a 2-4 record; after leaving Team Quest, he moved back to southern Oregon.  Back in May 2007, Cole had defeated Vince Lucero by TKO at the Palace Fighting Championship in Lemoore, CA; prior to his pro career, he was an All-American wrestler at Southern Oregon University.  Attempts to reach Cole’s representatives were unsuccessful; for more details on this development, continue to check back with Octagon Buzz as this story develops. ...
UFC Event In The Works For July?
2008-06-16 08:13:12
Mark July 19 on your calendar if you’re a MMA junkie, because that day  - as crowded as it already is - may just get even more crowded as according to Sherdog.com and verified by several MMA sources, the UFC is in the planning stages of an event (no doubt in response to the Affliction: Banned pay-per-view event) that assuming it comes to pass, will be televised on Spike TV.  Zuffa, Inc., parent comp[any of the UFC, is looking to hold the event in Las Vegas; such heavyweights (pun not intended) such as Wanderlei Silva and Brandon Vera have been approached about participating in the event (in probably a light heavyweight championship main event), although as in a lot of cases, a combination of the aforementioned two along with other fighters is also being considered, as well. Vera has made it no secret that he would want to fight in the 205-pound division; he is looking to rebound from his controversial first-round loss to Fabricio Verdum at UFC 85 on June 7 in London.  On the ...
