What Is More Important To Fans? Traditions or Trophies?
2007-08-31 06:07:31
So like it or not - yesterday’s public announcement by Dein made on the same day as the European draw was a master stoke in ensuring that all Arsenal fans would be fully aware of his sale of shares/ his new appointment as chairman of Red and White Holdings. Do you think that Wenger would have been surprised at the announcement - no chance - as you can be sure that Dein would have already told him in private of his intentions. Recently,Wenger admitted that he was close to sorting out an extension to his contract and had also stated that he still missed his day by day involvement with Dein at the club. Managing Director Keith Edelman believes the sale of David Dein’s shares and the establishment of the Red and White group will have little impact on the future of Arsenal Football Club. It was announced on Thursday that the former vice-chairman’s 14.58 per cent stakeholding had been bought by a company jointly-owned by two businessmen, Alisher Usmanov and Farhad Moshiri. It is ...
A Game That Resembled A Productive Training Session (Sparta Prague) (h) Reaction
2007-08-31 05:58:04
The clock showed 6 minutes 54 seconds when Tomas Rosicky put the 3rd round qualifying tie beyond doubt.  After this goal the game was put way beyond any doubt.  Any nerves were settled and the Arsenal faithful were in for an easy night.  It was a pity the players felt this way aswell.  Sparta put up little or no fight at all and it almost became a training game for the lads in red.  Arsenal played it around and at times became lethargic and allowed Sparta a rare venture forward.  Otherwise it was a simple exercise of keep ball with the odd flourish into the opposition box.  Unfortunately the players never moved out of first gear and a second goal didn’t really look on the cards. Half time arrived with every Gooner in the Emirates Stadium sitting pretty with their overpriced drinks (which have got smaller and gone up in price) and hot dogs (aids dogs as my mate calls them).  The second half started better with the home team pressurising Sparta into errors.   However this d ...

No Surprises On Deadline Day! - And A Poll!
2007-08-30 01:38:05
I am absolutely sure that Wenger is not bluffing this time when he says that there will be no more additions to the squad before this week’s deadline. Will Arsenal be able to win the Champions League at the end of this season with a team of mainly unknown players like Ajax did in 1995. They looked good against Sparta on Wednesday night’s second leg qualifying match where they scored 3 goals to add to the two goals they scored in the first leg match a fornight ago. Senderos,Walcott, Diaby,Eduardo and Hoyte were the players who started the match and who were not included in Satuday’s team against Manchester City (apart from Eduardo who was brought on as a late substitute in that game). However, after starting the match well by Rosicky scoring an early goal, the team gradually became too casual and laxidasical and were almost made to pay when Sparta missed two good chances. However, sparked on by some late substitutions in the second half - Fabregas for Diaby, Denilson ...
Any Answers?
2007-08-29 07:38:37
Firstly my apologies for the nature – or rather timing of this piece – it should have been posted on Monday. But I forgot. So I am sorry, and I will post it now nonetheless, as most of the questions are relevant. It goes as follows: I wonder dear readers if anyone out there can answer me half a dozen questions regarding the lovely victory over the Blue Mooners last Saturday? 1/ Why wasn’t Hamann red carded for that terrifying leg breaker of a tackle on RvP? 2/ Why wasn’t the penalty retaken when Schmeichel moved nearly two yards off his line before the kick was made? 3/ Why did the referee ignore the linesman when he indicated the above fact? 4/ Why did Arsene not start with Eduardo instead of Adey? He was fresh from a good and relatively easy international run out and scored a goal as well. Adey on the other hand was just back from injury and surely should only have been used as a second half sub to ease him back to match fitness. We all saw that he was well short of match ...
Fab 4 Should Be Rested Tonight?
2007-08-29 02:13:34
I’m not sure how many people will agree with me on this but I think it would be a good idea for Arsene to rest Cesc for tonights game. We are 2-0 up with 2 away goals so why risk more injuries by playing Cesc against a team who clearly hold him responsible for Repka’s injury in the first leg. The way Repka and his team set out to kick Arsenal in the first leg is a clear indication of what they are all about. These guys will play dirty! Say we get to 80 minutes of the second leg and there is no chance of Sparta Prague getting back into the game then it will not surprise me one bit if they decide to have a go at Cesc. With Gallas and Sagna out with injuries already we don’t need another injury, especially not to our key player. Raj ...
Time To Test The Squad
2007-08-28 11:37:57
I know that the champions league qualifier is very important to us and we should not take Sparta lightly. But I really dont think Arsene will get a better chance to assess his squad for a long time to come this season. I say this for two reasons- Persie and Fabregas are both on a yellow. So it would make sense to rest them. Also, Repka despite any media reports can be expected to come after Fabregas. Any chances of injury for Fabregas could be disastrous. How I believe the team should line up? I don’t think we should experiment much at the back, so that our two goal cushion sees us through despite any possible hiccups due to experimentation. Hoyte should come in for the injured Sagna. Probably Traore can come on as a substitute if we are sailing. I would really be interested in seeing Gilberto and Diaby playing in the middle of the park. It would be good tactically, as well considering the physical nature of the game. Also, give Walcott a full 90 minutes today on the right wing. The ...
A Lack Of Urgency In The Team Right Now? (Manchester City Reaction)
2007-08-26 12:09:07
Having watched yet another lacklustre first half at the Emirates on Saturday afternoon I began to wonder.  What has happened to the days when we shot right out of the blocks and the game was over after 30 minutes? Last season the players could explain they had just moved to a new ground and it would take time to get used to the new added length and width of the pitch.  However after 1 full season there this excuse no longer can stick.  I worry now that Arsenal as a team seems to lack that sharpness and edge we really requite with our style of football.  A few seasons back games were won by half time. The players came out and went at teams so fast they couldn’t cope and the rest of the game was simply routine.  I know counter attacking football is harder with teams sitting back with 10 men behind the ball but there isn’t the energy we’ve seen in previous seasons.  Manchester City were top of the league after 3 straight victories having not conceded a goal.  This match wa ...
Arsenal 1 Manchester City 0 - Match Report
2007-08-26 05:00:50
Kasper Schmeichel’s heroics were not enough to preserve Manchester City’s 100% record in the Premier League this season as Cesc Fabregas struck late in the match to earn Arsenal victory. Fabregas found the top corner to become the first goalscorer against Sven-Goran Eriksson’s City, who had won their first three games. It was particularly harsh on the imposing centre-back duo of Richard Dunne and Micah Richards, Richards’ only mistake resulting in a penalty that Schmeichel saved from Robin van Persie. And at the other end, Eriksson and his bench were up on their feet in the second half claiming a penalty when Kolo Toure flattened Michael Johnson, but referee Chris Foy waved play on, allowing Arsenal to take advantage. Emmanuel Adebayor returned to frist team action after a groin problem and Tomas Rosicky was also back in the team as Arsenal looked to break down a stubborn City defence. At the back, though, Philippe Senderos was injured in the warm-up and Gi ...
Arsenal vs Manchester City – Match Preview
2007-08-25 03:02:10
Writing this after the international fixtures, so far it seems we have come out of the other side with no fresh injuries.  William Gallas will be out until October so Philippe Senderos will step in.  Tomas Rosicky, Emmanuel Eboue and Abou Diaby are injured from the midfield with Gilberto still lacking match practice (or on the move?)  Up front there are no injuries it seems; in fact Adebayor should return from injury.  Denilson has also returned fully to the squad. Team selection will be very interesting for Saturday.  Starting at the back, who will take their place in goal?  Well, Jens Lehmann has dropped two clangers in two league games and had a dodgy night for Germany.  He looks short on confidence and with two able keepers in the wing I would like to see Wenger give them a chance.  He has talked about competition for the no.1 jersey; this is the time to prove this point.  This weekend we cannot afford any errors from whoever is selected between the sticks. Moving into ...
Arsenal V Man City
2007-08-24 01:53:11
I’ve did a few game preview last season and to my immense pride got most of them right however these were all based on my extensive football knowledge of the opposition. With that in mind I am at a bit of a disadvantage with the City game in that I know pretty much nothing about the majority of their first eleven. So, this game preview may be a bit below the usual high standards expected on the InsideArsenal site! Being Irish (and proud of it) I was always able to look at Sven from the outside in without any national fever taking hold and I can honestly say that he always left me distinctly under whelmed. I know that his qualifying record was pretty impressive but he never did anything at any tournament. And when you consider the pool of players available I feel that it isn’t all that much to expect England to have added either a World or more realistically a European cup to their single title. Some of his tactical decisions were poor and he I don’t recall him ever making a go ...
Getting The Arse With Arse.
2007-08-22 11:49:32
My mates and I were talking about the weekend’s football as usual in the pub last night (that’s both talking football as usual and in the pub as usual) when the discussion came round (as usual) to Arsene Wenger. The general feeling amongst us was that we are starting to get bit worried about Arsene. It’s now beginning to look more and more likely that he is not bringing any more players in – and that’s very worrying indeed. Our squad is simply too thin as it is. It isn’t a question of if we get injuries, it’s a question of when and how many. We are just three games into the season and have already been without Diaby, Denilson, Adebayor, Eduardo and Rosicky - and now Gallas is out till October for heavens sake. Since those wonderful days just three years ago when we were winning the Premier League undefeated, we have lost 14 members of that illustrious and experienced squad. Henry, Vieira, Bergkamp, Keown, Parlour, Pires, Edu, Lauren, Campbell, Cole, Reyes, Aliadiere an ...
Only A Few Days Left To For Wenger To Buy Some Players!
2007-08-22 11:31:50
Everyday day I switch the computer on to Newsnow and check the newspaper sports news on the BBC website in the desperate hope that I will see that someone is coming to the Arsenal - just like thousands of other fans! Here we are now - 2 premiership games and 1 champions league game and we have already lost Gallas for at least 6 weeks and RoSICKY is also out injured as well! I wish Rosicky had a twin brother with the same footballing talent - then we could alternate them to make up the fact that he seems to miss half the games every season with injury. As soon as I saw that Djourou had been loaned to Birmingham, I somehow knew that would guarantee one of our 3 centre backs who were left would be injured early into the season. If Toure or Sendoros get injured in the next few matches I suppose Gilberto or Hoyte will be drafted in and that is not good enough for a club with so-called ambition. We still have not got that left side wide man to balance up that side of our team yet and I am ...
