Wenger IS A Genius At Finding Talent In The Transfer Market, But Does He Miss Out Aswell Sometimes?
2007-08-22 05:22:41
This summer Arsene Wenger has brought in three players: Lukasz Fabianski, Bakary Sagna and Eduardo Da Silva. The first is for the future and Arsenal can only trust Wenger’s previously brilliant astuteness in the transfer market when it comes to finding players with potential. Bakary Sagna looks brilliant; he has made the defence more solid and adds options going forward aswell. Eduardo Da Silva has only played part of one competitive match but has looked good in pre season and certainly offered Arsenal something different. These signings do look very good and will improve the team, in some cases they already have.
However has Wenger missed out? If his shopping is finished then I hate to say I think he has. The team lacks a dominant centre back with pace and strength. Senderos lacks the pace but has the others. I’m not saying we would have got him, but I will use Micah Richards as an example. When Stuart Pearce left Manchester City Richards was unhappy, somethin ...

In Conversation With A Sp*rs Fan…
2007-08-21 16:52:12
In a break from the norm i am going to write a post about our neighbours. Dear old Tottenham Hotspurs. They never learn, they never get it right. They self sabotage on grand scales and every year it is going to be their year.
Typical Tottenham supporter from 2 weeks ago: I just can’t wait for the new season, our glorious leader Martin Jol has gone and bought us a brand spanking new striker and he’s going to propel us into the top 4. Hurrah!
Arsenal supporter from 2 weeks ago: Er…your midfield is still shit.
Tottenham: Oh no we’ve got little Aaron Lennon who is the best winger in the league, even better than Ronaldo.
Arsenal: He’s always injured, and my mum can cross better than him.
Tottenham: Don’t be rotten. Also we have Didier Zokora who turned down mean old Arsenal for us and he’s great. And we have ‘The Hudd’.
Arsenal: Yes, yes you do you have a man who is physically incapable of staying on his feet and the boy who can&rsqu ...

Dutch…Not French!
2007-08-21 13:13:28
You may think I’m crazy, but I’m not actually comparing this Arsenal side to that great Ajax team, more towards the entire Dutch culture towards football and it appears to relate to this new Arsenal side.
Naturally it is easy to look at past Dutch players at the club, when you had arguably the most influential player of his era in Dennis Bergkamp. He often said, ‘I guess I’m not interested in scoring ugly goals’, and this is clear to see nowadays with a number of flair players at the club, preferring to pass the ball to create an opening and scoring a ‘pure’ goal. It is this moral superiority of aesthetically better football, which causes defeats against inferior opposition. The Dutch have had a nemesis in the shape of the dreaded penalty shoot-out, and it is interesting to note that in 1998 World Cup Semi-final penalty shoot-out defeat against an inferior Brazil only Overmars and Bergkamp scored their respective spot-kicks, perhaps showing a different, perhaps English ...

Arsenal A Finishing School For Other Clubs?
2007-08-21 12:26:15
David Bentley, Matthew Upson, Fabrice Muamba, Steve Sidwell. What do they all have in common? They were trained at Arsenal and now are at other Premiership clubs. This highlights an issue within Arsenal Football Club. We have arguably the most exciting crop of youngsters in Europe. Youngsters from all over the world are at Arsenal learning their trade. The only problem is that they cannot all make it. This becomes a problem when they decide they will not get a chance. They may want to leave and will end up somewhere else in England or Europe. Other teams benefit from the footballing education we give them and we lose such players. When we had the problem with width last season, David Bentley was hitting the heights of form with Blackburn and surely would have been in our team if he had the chance.
Therefore, is Arsenal more of a finishing school? It does seem that way with past examples. The players mentioned before all learnt at Arsenal and now are elsewhere when maybe they could h ...

A Dissaffecting Sunday
2007-08-20 14:14:06
Leave home at 9am on Sunday morning, get to Blackburn at 12.30 for 3pm kick off. Find usual pub far busier than usual neccessetating different car park further away from ground. Go to pub for drink and first half of United game, take 25minutes to get served and then find they have no beer left and only cans of Carling. Go to game. Watch the usual bollocks from North Western, Anti-Footballing pricks, and an ever so predictable inept referee. Begin to contemplate victory, watch Jens chuck one in. Go home. Get stuck in car park for an hour. Listen to Alan Green and the rest of the Liverpool mafia go mental on 5live. Get held up before M6. Get home at 11pm. Watch Match of the Day 2 coverage of the game. 11.06pm lament the sheer laziness and shitness of the Match of the Day 2 coverage. Go to bed.
That was my Sunday how was yours?
Yea so it was not my favourite away trip of all time, in fact at times on the journey home i would have swapped it for one of the many Bolton defeats over the y ...

Blackburn Verdict: Guilty As Charged!
2007-08-20 12:57:23
Well….before we get into actual football matters can I just say Mark Hughes and his team are a bunch of filthy b*stards.
Blackburn should be ashamed that they turned a game of football into such a fight.
Blackburn fans enjoy your season as I wouldn’t pay a penny to watch a team like that at home games. There has to be some underground fighting in Town that will cost half the price of a football ticket if that’s what interests you….
I’m very proud of our Boys despite the result and another howler by Lehmann. I don’t think some of our players were ready just yet like Eduardo but we had little choice but to start him I suppose. Well done the lads! We didn’t get pushed around and we played the game
Blackburn’s way but came away with a lot of positives. We dominated the first half. Second half we struggled but this is down to us not playing natural game but still think we were very unlucky to concede in the end.
Wenger had the following to say after the game: ...

One Up, Two Down
2007-08-20 06:43:52
All in all we are not in a bad position after the first two games of the new campaign. Like most of our rivals we have dropped a couple of points but it’s a shame we couldn’t have taken advantage of the fact that Manure have stuttered badly and that Chelski and the Pool have already dropped points.
Obviously the aforementioned scousers can be more satisfied with their start, having had a difficult away game at Villa and an even tougher game at home to a full strength Chelski.
They were also robbed of all three points by a piece of utter idiotic refereeing from that prize numpty Rob Styles. How can a ‘professional’ referee get a decision so wrong from so close to the incident?
Back to our ‘battle’ up at Ewood, and what about mad Jens then? You may know I am not the greatest fan of our German stopper. Yes he has made some remarkable saves over the years, and was a vital member of the invincibles, but I just don’t think you can ever be totally relaxed with him in goal. He ...

Liability?
2007-08-19 16:31:20
This week has led me to question Arsene Wenger somewhat on two fronts. These being: his tactical substitutions and his refusal to give up on certain players. Jens Lehmann has dropped two clangers in two league games. Against Fulham the players bailed him out but were not able to repeat the trick today. They were not simple errors, but down right horrible clangers. Last Sunday a simple pass caused him to lose co-ordination and today a shot straight at him somehow made him punch it behind him and into the top corner. The problem with Lehmann is it seems like he is becoming more of a liability as time goes on. We all know about him problems at set pieces. He has trouble coming through a crowd to collect a ball without trying to knock half these people and this creates doubt and uncertainty, which often leads to the opposing team grabbing a goal.
So what has this got to do with Wenger? Well, surely Lehmann should be dropped. Maybe one can excuse one error at the very sta ...

With Lack Of Wide Options Let Us Hope “Great Attitude” And “Old Heads” Is Enough Against Blackburn.
2007-08-19 06:37:03
After seeing Everton’s run come to an end today and Spuds finally getting a win (albeit against a very weak looking
Derby). I find myself waiting with bated breath (…and firmly clinched butt cheeks) on our game tomorrow against Black “pass it to Benni” burn. In fact I’m happy how we have performed but like Everton they have been performing well too.
Let’s hope they go the same way as Mersey blue tomorrow. Benni is a doubt but they do have Santa Cruz who worries me and our midget defence….We look stretched to say the least with Adebayor, Gilberto, Diaby, Eboue and Mr Jinx himself Rosicky looking set to miss this game. (Hey… it could be worse……he could be as injury prone as Ledley King who I think may have taken over Darren Anderton’s locker…..They should seriously consider fumigating the place….makes me smile though) Who to play then? Eduardo would be a risk so doubt Wenger will start him……so maybe Bendtner or possibly Walcott who are b ...

Blackburn Rovers vs. Arsenal – Match Preview
2007-08-19 05:25:15
So as we are off to Ewood park for a crucial fixture, especially considering that Man U is playing its derby and the other two are playing each other, three points from this fixture could really put us in a decent position.
Blackburn is our general nemesis though we did play against them quite well last season. Going by the Middlesbrough game, Hughes can be expected to start with a flat 4-4-2 with Santa Cruz and Roberts upfront. Their main threat would be as always from the wings, David Bentley on the right and Pedersen on the left. It would be great to see how Sagna deals with Pedersen. I expect Pedersen to be nullified by Sagna completely. Clichy was slightly below his game against Sparta in the defensive department. But Bentley is never really going to trouble him. Robbie Savage will be at his irritating best in the middle and Dunn would look to add the creative spark. The partnership between Samba and Nelsen has come in for rave reviews so far. They are tall strong defenders, so ...

Arsenal V Blackburn - Match Preview
2007-08-18 09:16:48
Background: permission
Arsenal and Blackburn had their midweek fixture postponed because both had to play in European qualification matches. Both teams had to travel and play tough matches abroad. Arsenal had a 24 hour rest advantage, which could be a crucial factor in the outcome of the match. Arsenal beat Fulham 2-1 at the Emirates stadium with a last minute goal from Alexander Hleb, before traveling to Prague to beat Sparta Prague 2-0. Blackburn on the other hand was able to come back from being 1-0 behind to beat Middleborough 1-2. They also won their UEFA cup qualifying match against Mypa (Finland) 0-1.
Expectations:
Arsenal has considerably easy home fixtures up till the end of October, but if we want to challenge for the title, we’ll need to pick up points on the road, and tomorrow is our first test.
This game at Blackburn will prove to be decisive in the campaign of our young gunners. If we could pull of a win at tomorrow’s match, then add on 6 more points from our 2 co ...

Are Options The Key For Arsenal This Season?
2007-08-16 11:07:27
Looking at Arsenal last season it looked as though the squad looked very thin. This was most apparent in the defence and the attack. With Gallas injured for a very large chunk of the season, Arsenal were left with only 3 natural Central defenders, 2 of which were only young talents, (Senderos and Djourou). These two did an admirable job but are still learning their trade. In attack, the most glaring statistic is that Robin Van Persie was our top goalscorer with 13 and his season ended in January. Emmanuel Adebayor played most of the season and should have scored more with the chances he had. Julio Baptista was the same but now he has left.
What makes this season any different you might ask? Well at the back Bakary Sagna – even by Wenger’s standards – seems to be a “real quality signing” (Charlie Nicholas). He is a right back by trade and has added solidarity to what was a shaky defence but has not shirked on his attacking duties aswell. A perfect example be ...

Any One Will Do Tonight.
2007-08-15 12:09:31
What a most delightful evening on the TV last night, seeing the ‘Glory Glory’ ones from down the Lane (that’s the same team you will remember that most of the pundits forecast will take our place in the CL next season) get a right good thumping from Everton.
I have never seen so many miserable Totters mates in my life before.
You have to say in Spuds defence, however, that after Kaboul limped off in the first half, they had their three first choice central defenders missing. Can’t see why they still insist on playing Gardener – he looks a cross between Cygan and Gus Ceasar.
Makes you think what we would do in the same situation without Kolo, Gallas and Swiss Tony. Actually it’s something I don’t really want to think about.
Is it my imagination or there a lot more injuries these days? According to Norman Whiteside, that cynically dirty Mancs midfielder of many a year ago - turned modern day podiatrist - it may be down to the players boots.
Whatever the reason, i ...

A Win Would Be Handy
2007-08-15 11:11:14
So on the night Arsenal return to Europe, so I return to posting. Having taken a break over the Summer due to a mixture of work, tiredness and growing bored of the infantile comments. Anyway a new season brings a new start so here goes…bearing in mind this is my equivalent of a pre-season post i shall work my way in with a short one.
So Sparta Prague again, a team we’re reasonably familiar with. There best player is an overweight ex West Ham player who is now really old, so in an ideal world they shouldn’t pose too much of a problem. They are certainly no better than Zagreb who we dispatched with some ease last year, Zagreb of course at least having one player who turned out to be good enough to play for us.
In reality though, any game such as this could turn out to be a banana skin so a professional performance from the boys, which needs to start with solidity and a clean sheet and preferably a goal apiece for a striker and a midfielder would be lovely. It look ...
