Learn To Ski - Skiing Beginners Tips, Part I
2007-11-30 16:15:37
Finally the temperature went below zero here in Finland! It is winter now. It is really weird that there has been snow in Europe for weeks already, but nothing here in Nordic countries (remember our news of cancelling Levi alpine skiing race?). Anyhow, now the temperature is cold and soon we will receive masses of snow, right? Have you just started skiing or are you planning to start skiing? Have you already tried skiing? If you are a beginner, this article series is right for you. We provide you the best skiing beginner’s tips we can imagine. We, three authors of this blog, are all very experienced skiers with more than 20 years of experience, which makes more than 60 years of skiing all together. We know a thing or two about skiing, snowboarding, telemark skiing, moguls skiing and even monoskiing and ballet skiing. We have crawled backcountries and been to races. We are not alpine champions but we have a broad experience in skiing. Ok, was this enough self-promoting? I think it ...
Christmas Presents for Skiers - Top 9 Christmas Presents for a Skier
2007-11-29 08:36:15
As we all know, Christmas is coming again, and it is time to find presents for our kids, parents, friends, mates, etc. We gathered our top ten Christmas present ideas and decided to recommend them for our readers. This is a list of presents we would purchase as well, so we do not recommend anything we personally would not like. What are you going to give as a Christmas present for your friends and beloved? Have you already purchased all the presents? I went shopping with my wife and all we got so far is just one baby doll for our daughter. All the rest, 99 presents are still not found.. If you are a skier, snowboarder or a telemark skier, or your friend(s) belong to that group, you probably would like to give presents related to the sport, right? Last year I gave my son brand new Volkl skis for alpine slalom skiing and I saw that it was his best present last year. This year he will get something different, in fact a Jackson RR guitar, but my younger son will get new skis. Anyhow, those ...
Why You Should Become a Snowboarder? - Three Good Reasons for Going Snowboarding in Addition to Skiing
2007-11-28 09:05:35
Janne wrote about his love to snowboarding in addition to skiing. As Janne said, we both go snowboarding and even telemark skiing in addition to ordinary skiing. In fact we cover all types of skiing related sports, even monoskiing that was popular in the 1980’s. It is also true that our boards are leftovers from Finnish pro riders. The truth is that we have spent all our money on skiing and traveling, and therefore we have always looked for the cheap or free second hand snowboards. It is very expensive to buy all the equipment from stores, so for our budget this has been a very good solution. Starting snowboarding when you are 25 or 30 or even 40 years old may sound too challenging, and I can understand that. If you have not been in snowboarding, surfing or skateboarding scene, it must be difficult to get in it, even just a little. In that case I can only say that forget other people, find a board and a good place to practice and go for it! Snowboarding is fabulous and you can ne ...
I’m a Skier - and I Love Snowboarding
2007-11-27 08:37:38
Both Marko and I own snowboards in addition to our (many) skis. Being the cheap bastards, both of our boards are some left overs from the Finnish snowboard pros we have known/contacted (through friends) over the years. We have not been even riding for ages. If there is time on snow to be had, naturally we hop on our skis these days. I have not even thought about riding a single plank for a while. Then, one day I was going through some old pics on my computer. Damn, couple of ones from the year 1999 - the legendary snow year in the Alps - where I was riding a board. Yes, I rode a board because there was not (or they were really rare) ordinary fat skis at the time…I needed to float on that one metre of bottomless, soft snow. And my Burton Supermodel 168 did that, giving those effortless, weightless powder turns. Without having (that much) skateboarding or surfing background riding a board was just a way to slide down the mountain. Actually, I still thought I was skiing. Everyth ...
Alpine Skiing World Cup - Aksel Lund Svindal and Marlies Schild Winners in Lake Louise and Panorama
2007-11-26 09:00:52
Norvegian Aksel Lund Svindal took the first position in men’s super-G alpine skiing race in Lake Louise in Canada. Svindal’s time in Sunday’s race was 1.29,19, while Austrian Benjamin Raich came 0,42 seconds behind. Third position was taken by Swiss Didier Cuche with time 1.29,79. Men’s cup situation after 4/41 races is: 1) Svindal 234 points, 2) Raich 166, 3) Kalle Palander 140, 4) Hudec 132, 5) Cuche 106, 6) Manfred Mölgg and Marc Gini 100, 8] Ted Ligety and Marco Sullivan 80, 10) Kucera and Jerman 72. Ladies slalom race winner on Saturday was Austrian Marlies Schild with time 1.39,95. Second one was Sarka Zahrobska with time 1.40,63, and third one was Kroatian Ana Jelusic with time 1.40,64. Marlies Schild dominated the race with great skiing. This was the first time the race was arranged in Panorama and the slope was a little steeper than before. ...
Learning to Ski - Few Good Tips for Beginners to Learn To Ski
2007-11-25 03:00:58
What would be the best way to learn to ski? Well, to ski. Just like in programming. You can read much from books and you should read, but becoming a really good programmer you need to program a lot. How is this related to skiing? Skiing is a hobby you learn by doing, but is it enough? It can be, but probably it is not the optimum way to learn to ski. This article provides you few good tips to learn to ski so that you will be a good skier in a reasonably short time. First of all, think about your motivation to ski. Are you really willing to go to slopes and ski? Are you willing to be out there in cold weather? Especially you need to think if you are ready to accept that in the beginning you will not be a good skier, just like it has been with every single skier. I ask you to think about your motivation because I have seen so many people quitting because they have not been really motivated and they have felt it embarrassing to be a beginner. So you think you are motivated and ready to st ...

Cool Skiing Video Found by Ben Carr
2007-11-21 03:45:46
Ben Carr sent me email a while ago and gave some really good positive feedback of Homeboyski.Com. Thanks Ben, I really appreciate you took the time and sent me your feedback! Ben enjoyed my skibum articles, namely Life of a Skibum and Being a Skibum. Receiveing positive feedback motivates writing and helps to keep up our daily posting frequency. Sometimes it is hard to write daily because we have other duties as well. We have our day jobs, family and kids, sports, etc. On top of all that we write to few blogs such as this homeboyski.com. Another blog I am running is homeboyastronomy.com for those who are interested in skywatching. If you are into astronomy, check out my most popular article Finding the Andromeda Galaxy. If you are new to astronomy and interested to start, read my article Basics for Beginners - Telescopes I. Astronomy is one of my few interests, as well as skiing and mountain biking. Astronomy gives something different from sports, something to think and wonder. Sports ...

Bode Miller Wants Doping To Be Allowed
2007-11-19 07:46:15
According to Welt am Sonntag, the alpine ski star Bode Miller wants doping to be allowed. 30 years old American alpine skiing world champion (2005) says that there is no point to ban doping as long as we cannot identify all the doping users. According to Miller, doping tests have nothing to do with justice. “They are just waste of time and money”. Last time Bode Miller called for releasing doping was a year ago. That time he drove the FIS and the Olympic Committee nuts with his comments. What do you think about Miller’s straight comments? Is he a visionary and should we listen to him or his this just a trick to get media attention? Leave a comment for discussion. ...
Eric Pollard for President…
2007-11-19 02:00:23
Monday. If you’re having tough time at the office/work place, check these videos out… I did a review about the new ski film Idea few days ago…and when searching the trailer from the web I also bumbed into these clips of Eric Pollard. Hard to admit to idolize anyone at the age of 34 but this guy is pretty much my hero (skiing-wise at least). And the thing that separates him from your average new schooler is right there at the start of the first video (Focused clip)…the guy can SKI not just jib… Btw. the Primus song on the Focused clip is pretty killer too! ...

Sunday Ski Movie Review - Ski Porn!
2007-11-18 06:00:46
Now, it is time to rock and roll! Ski Porn! is a skiig DVD that really got my attention. Just play the teaser below and you will understand. As all the skiing movies nowadays start with helicopter images, this one does not make a difference. Next my good old skiing hero Seth Morrison shows some fantastic powder skiing in a forerst while pretty good rock music is played in background (yeah, I’m into rock and metal music..). Just look at Seth skiing on 00:32. Holy… How about 00:42? What a jump. Bullseye! Next the teaser continues with classical big moutain skiing. That’s where Seth is at home. On 1:17 I can just sit back and dream that I was there. Hold on! What a powder field on 1:32. Fabulous. The end of the teaser reminds us the dangers of big mountains and backcountries. Looks bad. What a movie! Lots of great skiing by great skiers. Featured skiers are Pep Fujas, Simon Dumont, TJ Schiller, JP Auclair, Sammy Carlson, Andy Mahre, Andreas Hatveit, Chris Benchetler, Pe ...
Ski Movie Review: “Idea” by Poor Boyz Production and Erik Iberg
2007-11-17 00:00:46
Skiers with no poles, small label reggae/beats, no actual parts or names anywhere, smaller mountains, even skiing at the resort (vs. the usual heli footage), switch landings and take-offs anywhere, nice “normal” tree skiing, insane mt. Baker powder, a part including pro skiers snowboarding, very mellow editing… Idea by Erik Iberg and Poor Boyz Production is truly different. The film follows three pro skiers (Eric Pollard, Pep Fujas and Andy Mahre) through one season and tries to capture their every day, “real” experience. Whether the film is as ground breaking as some people claim (especially in www.newschoolers.com) is yet to been seen. I wouldn’t say it compares to the Greg Stump stuff or even to early MSP or TGR in pioneering new fronts. But what is really nice in my opion is that the film kind of sets the new pace and mid-set for the ski flicks (In addition to another cult classic: Teddybear Crisis by Chris Ostness and Henrik Rostrup). In snowb ...
