2008-01-21 06:07:52
American alpine skier Scott Macartney’s crash in alpine world cup downhill race in Kitzbühel was probably the worst crash in this season. Scott Macartney crashed in Kitzbühel with high speed (140 km/h) and hit his head heavily on icy ground, resulting into unconsciousness. He lost both of his skis as well as his helmet and glided over the finish line. As paramedics arrived, Scott Macartney’s body was shaking on ground and it looked like he had suffered a neurological trauma. After the first aid unconscious Scott Macartney was transported to a hospital in Innsbruk. Latest news of Scott Macartney tell that he is recovering and is not unconscious anymore. Scott Macartney suffered concussion, but did not breake any bones or suffer other injuries. Scott Macartney is still in hospital in Innsbruck and doctors expect him recovering 100%. Mind The Gap - One Spectacular Ski Movie!
2008-01-20 04:00:01
We are lazy dudes. We watch skiing videos on Sunday mornings instead of cleaning our houses. I love being lazy, I love skiing DVD’s. I h-a-t-e cleaning our house on weekends. Sure I understand it is a must but I want to start my weekends with a cup of coffee and a ski video. You might ask why don’t we go skiing on Sunday morning? Good question. There are two reasons. We just ran out of money and there is no snow in Talma Glacier, my local ski resorts. Dudes go skiing in northern Finland and I become more and more jealous as the days go by.. Let’s get to the business. Here is a fantastic ski movie! Mind The Gap is a high quality ski movie bringing some of the biggest names in freeskiing to the screen. 45 minutes movie has lots of adrenaline and action that makes you think “those guys are out of their minds..”. Big stars skiing in this film are Simon Dumont, Jon Olsson, Candide Thovex, Andreas Håtveit, Charles Gagnier, Peter Olenick and Sammy Carlson. Mind ...

Ski Resort Review - Talma Glacier: Fabulous Little Ski Resort in Southern Finland
2008-01-19 03:00:45
Yesterday I wrote a ski resort review of Chamonix. I have been skiing in Chamonix since 1997, almost yearly, and more often than in my local ski resort here in Finland. Chamonix is a great place to ski, especially for so called ski bums. Why do we go skiing so far from Finland? Read this ski resort review of Talma Glacier, my local ski resort and you know why we go skiing in Europe. Finland is a small country located in Scandinavia, next to Russian border. Despite of the high standard of living, Finnish ski resorts are tiny compared gigantic resorts such as Les 3 Vallée in France. Anyhow, Finnish ski resorts are crowded and popular. Why on Earth? The reason is that skiing is in our veins. We learn to ski when we are two or three years old and we skiing is one our most popular hobbies. It is in our blood. Finnish alpine skiers, such as Kalle Palander, have shown their skills in the Alpine Skiing World Cup. Also our mogul skiers, cross-country skiers and especially snowboarders and ski ...
Ski Resort Review - Chamonix: European Mountaineering and Backcountry Skiing Mecca
2008-01-18 06:46:44
In 1997 I called through a number of hostels in Chamonix and asked if they had room for me. I was planning my very first skibum trip to Chamonix, to the European skiing and mountaineering Mecca. This was going to be my first time in the Alps as well. So far I had been skiing only in northern Finland. I was excited, enthusiastic and highly motivated to start my big journey. I got a room in a nice little hostel, hosted by an American couple. I arrived in Chamonix in late January 1997. It was already night when I arrived, so I did not see much peaks around the valley. In the morning the sky was clear as I opened the window. I was shocked. I had never seen such high peaks and massive mountains so close. In that moment I knew it. I had arrived to the right place. I felt being at home. I knew nobody in Chamonix and I arrived there alone. I understood I need to get together with other skiers in order to get myself to the backcountries, because that was the reasons why I was there. I started s ...

The Importance of Adjusting Your Bindings Correctly - Part 1/2: Let Ski Service Adjust Your Bindings
2008-01-15 07:18:38
Correctly adjusted bindings play an important role in skiing. It is important to secure your skiing by adjusting your bindings correctly for your needs. If bindings are loosely adjusted, they can release while you ski, which can lead to a serious crash. If bindings are adjusted too tight, they can stay locked and do not release even though you crash. Again, this situation can lead to injuries. Therefore it is very important to adjust bindings correctly at least few times a year. If you ski with children, remember to do this for your children’s bindings as well. This article is divided into two parts. This first part describes you the meaning of adjusting bindings correctly and how it is done by professionals in a ski service, while the second part of this article describes you how you can do it by yourself. It is better to do it by yourself one day, because carrying your skis to a store every now and then can be very annoying and too costly. First, let professionals do it for you ...
Skiing Dress Code - How To Wear When Going Skiing?
2008-01-14 17:38:56
It was almost 25 years ago when I got a present from my brother. It was a neon-coloured overall for skiing. I weared it every time I went skiing in our local hill. I was proud of it. Anyhow, there was one problem. It was not much water resisting and therefore it quickly became wet. I remember that I used to feel cold and wet all the time. It was just fine back then, but I would not like to experience it again. I learned to wear right for skiing, I learned the skiing dress code. It is important to wear good clothes when you go skiing. Good clothing helps you to stay warm and dry, and gives you space to move your hands and legs. Today there are very many different brands and choices for skiing wear, and naturally there are many levels of prices as well. Before selecting the brand, such as North Face, Marmott, Mammut (in the picture), Spider and such, consider the following few advices. Important Elements of Good Skiing Clothes Please, notice that this article is about grown-up ski wears ...
Forget Skiing In The Future - Climate Change Is Going To Kill Skiing Industry
2008-01-13 17:45:57
This is Doom’s Day article. Climate change is going to kill skiing industry. The amount of snow in this planet will decrease day by day until skiing in most of the countries is impossible. This is how I see it and it is based on real-life experience. Period. Am I over reacting? May be, may be not. The fact is that climate is not the same as some 20 years ago. Is it changing in long run? I do not know this field of science at all, but so many researchers claim that it is really happening, so I believe in it. As we have seen it in this blog, the climate here in Finland is not as it used to be. Winters are not as cold as they used to be and we receive snow later and later every year. It is the middle of January and we do not have snow in Helsinki in Finland. It is not normal and definitely it is not the same as it used to be. Based on this and what researchers claim, the climate is changing globally. It is warming. Skiing industry will die. Heh.. I am shooting big guns again. I will ...
What To Do When You Cannot Go Skiing? - Surf Ski Webcams Around The World
2008-01-12 09:53:30
Today I discovered an interesting website and decided to share the link. It is a Snoweye website full of links to webcams in ski resorts around the world. You can easily browse to your favorite ski resorts and see how it looks there right now. For example, I wanted to see the weather conditions in Wengen in Switzerland right now, because there is men’s Alpine Cup slalom ongoing. First of all, you need to know the location of the resort, because the links are organized based on their geographical location. This is a little bit difficult from usability point of view. I know that Wengen belongs to Bern area, so I browsed to “West” and the “Bern Region”. Wengen webcam is located on the bottom of the page. So, how is the weather in Wengen right now? It seems foggy. Not good.. Tomorrow there should be men’s downhill which is my favorite race in the whole Alpine Skiing World Cup. If you watch Mürren (on the other side of the valley) webcam you see that who ...
Skiing With Children - What Is a Good Age to Start Skiing With Your Child
2008-01-11 15:36:37
Have you ever been thinking what is a good age to go skiing with a child? We have three kids (2, 4 and 13 years) and we think about that question always when our kids are about two years old. When could I take my son skiing with me? I was six years old when my sister took me skiing with her, which happened in 1980. I remember how fascinating this new sport was and how extremely enthusiastic I was. I really fell in love with skiing. This might sound funny, but it is true. Now I am over 30 and I have own kids. When our second son was two years old, I almost took him skiing with me. I discussed with people in forums and most of them said it would not be a good idea, while some folks said “go ahead”. I decided to wait another year. Now our youngest child, my daughter, is about two years old. I find myself thinking this same question again.. So what is a good age to start skiing with children? It depends on few things, but I say it is best to wait until your child is over four o ...

Three Great Skiing Videos
2008-01-09 17:45:01
I just stumbled upon few interesting skiing and snowboarding videos today. I was looking for some new videos to order and I think I found three very good ones. So I need to complete my order tomorrow because right now it is midnight here in Finland.. Skiing Video #1 - Teddy Bear Crisis The first very interesting DVD is the one I mentioned few days ago, Teddy Bear Crisis (my earlier post HomeboySki.Com New Design). If you watch the trailer of Teddy Bear Crisis, you see how Simon Dumont smashes himself on ground because of having way too much speed when approaching the jump. Man, it looks really horrible.. Simon Dumont broke a number of bones, and it was actually a miracle that he stayed alive! Anyhow, see also the rest of the trailer. This DVD looks really interesting. There is good skiing, fabulous mountains, good music and all you expect from a good skiing DVD. Hold on! It looks like Amazon has zero items in stock, so I might need to wait some time before I can order it. Teddy Bear C ...

HomeboySki.Com New Design - Taking A Step Towards Professional Service
2008-01-06 00:53:44
You might have noticed that HomeboySki.Com looks different than a couple of days ago. We changed the Wordpress theme to a better functioning and scalable premium theme. Our new theme is provided by web design StudioJMC. With this new theme we are looking for higher usability because now we can organize the elements of the site in a much better way. We have now good places for important widgets, such as Recent Comments, Weekly Video, Banner Ads, RSS and Email Subscriptions, Recommended Sites and Blogroll. We also prefer providing full articles on front page which is not common in magazine type themes. That’s why HomeboySki.Com does not look like an online magazine, but a traditional blog. We are very satisfied with the new design, but what do you think about it? Please leave a comment and say which one you prefer, the new design or the old one? Now that we have a new design, let us celebrate it a little. What would be a good way to celebrate a new theme? Well, I just made my first ...
