Idiomatic expressions (idioms) - Express yourself. Be the devil's advocate!
2007-05-26 22:59:00
Found an interesting comment on Da Daily Donkey post:"Alam mo ba na ang donkey ay isa katangi-tanging hayop. Sabagay, pwedeng hayop at katangi-tangi ang ginawaran mo ng parangal. My suggestion ako, magnominate tau at pagbotohan natin..... Siyempre, fuel na din ang blog pag bumoto..... Hehehehehe!!!!! Great post! - Anonymous"Much thanks for the great comment! Simply put, the AnitoKid likes idiomatic expressions (idioms)! No! No! No! He loves them! And here is his spin on the money. Enjoy! An idiom is a combination of words with a special meaning that cannot be inferred from its separate parts. It is an absorbing interest to both foreign and native speakers of the English language. The English language is rich in idioms, and persons with only a superficial knowledge of English idioms will find themselves, more often than not, at a serious disadvantage in their reading, and even more so when they partake in discussions, friendly banters, and debates. With regards to the first "Da Daily Don ...

The ethanol-from-corn and food vs. fuel debate: Ethanol has its problems
2007-05-24 20:17:00
Is the energy obtained from ethanol from corn less than the energy required for its production? Do people care enough about the irrefutable negative environmental consequences? With regards to the first question, the National Corn Growers Association (NCGA) would have us presume and accept that seeking a way to produce ethanol with a sufficient net positive energy as a replacement for gasoline is a futile academic undertaking with little or no value for public policy debate. However, this premise defeats the goal of "think outside the box" academic exercises carried out by academicians and researchers searching for answers. And a number of ramifications surround the second concern, e.g., sustainability. Is the technology sustainable? What other factors do we need to consider here? Soil erosion? Soil depletion? Where do we go from here then?Ethanol has been heavily touted as a magical elixir to solve every conceivable economic, environmental, and foreign policy question. A vocal proponen ...

These are exciting times for the Philippine BPO industry! Where do I sign?
2007-05-24 07:26:00
With regards to the question on whether or not the Philippines has enough available pool of qualified and skilled workers to do the job, the AnitoKid asks: "Do they have enough work for the Filipinos?"Way before the noun BPO (business process outsourcing) was coined, the Philippines has been the premier home to firms servicing offshore information and electronic publishing needs, e.g., Saztec Philippines and Innodata Philippines Inc. If I remember correctly, Innodata was the first "BPO" firm to pioneer medical transcription in the country. In less than a year, Innodata sold its medical transcription operations for a huge profit. Currently, that industry segment alone is a multi-million dollar niche in the BPO sphere. Not only has that niche generated employment opportunities for the Filipino people, it also served as a catalyst for the establishment of schools and institutes offering everything related to the needs of the BPO industry. These include, but are not limited to, data encod ...

Nonfossil fuels thrive on word tricks of persuasion
2007-05-22 21:13:00
While ethanol claims an increasing share of the Philippine fuel market, a once-common name for gasoline alcohol blends still remains unpopular and in relative disuse. Gasohol. It is the name given to gasoline/ethanol blends. In the US, ethanol makers dislike the term because they experienced difficulties selling products associated with the noun. Motorists have associated the noun with engine-performance problems that many of them had experienced with such blends. And despite ethanol's new popularity as an automotive fuel additive, the term gasohol is colloquial at best. Of course, consumer attitudes about gasohol have reversed due to improvements in fuel chemistry and most importantly, the management of public opinion. Currently, ethanol in fuel is marketed as such offering supply and environmental advantages worthy of public support and, for Miguel Zubiri (candidate for a seat in the Philippine Senate), as a political battle cry. They believe, sincerely or not, that ethanol represen ...

Peso closes at 61/2 -yr high! But what does it mean?
2007-05-22 02:45:00
What follows is a post from PhilStar.com, i.e., very interesting news on the Philippine Peso breaking past its resistance level; closing at 61/2-yr high! What is even more interesting are the anonymous comments that follow, which showcase the Filipino's sense of humor in a different kind of light. Laugh trip! The PostThe peso broke past its resistance level yesterday, closing at a six and a half year-high of 46.31 to a dollar as remittances from overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) started to peak helped along by foreign portfolio investments. The peso closed at its intra-day high, with total volume reaching nearly a billion dollars at $971.85 million at the Philippine Dealing System (PDS). The peso opened strong at 46.530 before hitting a high of 46.310 and a low of 46.570 to the dollar. Yesterday?s close was the highest since the peso last touched the 46.30-to-$1 level on Oct. 2, 2000. The strength of the peso surprised the market which had expected a correction after Standard & Poors an ...
