Risqué YouTube Song Takes Obama Campaign by Surprise
From ABC News: June 13, 2007 ? An amusing, risqué music video, featuring a nubile young woman breathlessly singing her love for presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., appeared on the Web this week. Titled "I Got a Crush on Obama," the song and video took the Obama campaign by surprise and further demonstrated how the democratic nature of the Internet specifically Internet video on sites such as YouTube is affecting politics in unpredictable ways. "Hey, 'B,' it's me," a woman who calls herself "Obamagirl" murmurs amorously into a phone at the beginning of the slow jam. "If you're there, pick up. I was just watching you on C-SPAN." The song and video goes on to poke racy fun at the way some voters have responded viscerally to both Obama's charisma and the personal nature of his political appeal. moreYou'll note the absence of the "My name is Barack Obama and I approve of this message." at the end of this one.

YouTube as a medium for advertising
Are you one of over 5 million to have watched the latest trailer for Titanic: The Sequel on YouTube? The rumour mill has been churning out the idea of a possible sequel to box-office hit Titanic (1997) for a good decade now. So some college kid with a little too much time on his hands thought up a story line, spliced some film clips together and made a spoof trailer – Titanic 2: Jack’s Back. What amazed me, apart from my sister’s Asian students thinking it was a real advert for a forthcoming release, was the sheer number of people who had viewed the clip. And it was all through word-of-mouth. Harnessed properly, YouTube makes for an ideal primary medium for broadcasting a ‘television’ campaign. A YouTube campaign doesn’t face the constrictions of conventional television advertising and can be far more risqué, something global youth brands like Levi’s could definitely benefit from. The trick is to produce something with a concept that
YouTube Will Fight US Military Block
On Monday, the US Department of Defense announced that a number of social networking and media sites would be blocked on its network, citing bandwidth concerns. "This is a bandwidth and network management issue. We've got to have the networks open to do our mission. They have to be reliable, timely and secure," a US Strategic Command spokeswoman told Stars & Stripes. (Marshall Kirkpatrick has a good blog post summing up the reaction across the blogosphere.)For their part, YouTube isn't accepting the ban without a fight. Today, YouTube told the Associated Press they would challenge the US Defense Department's decision. "Watching or uploading online video does use bandwidth and can slow or tie up a network, but [CEO Chad] Hurley expressed doubt that soldiers' use of YouTube could have any real effect on the military's massive network," reported the AP.Hurley joked that since the Defense Department invented the Internet, bandwidth shouldn't be a problem. But he vowed to work with th

RU, Imus, Alanis and Assessing the Decline of Western Civilization via YouTube Comments
This blog is about original stuff that I (usually) think is funny.  This is not a blog where I link to the best YouTube videos or top news stories- there are a jillion blogs out there that do that.  But I had some time today, since The Tadpole is away on vacation, and I had some patience, since I’m feeling a little ill.  So, in our unending quest to entertain and inform, The Frog Bog Research Team did a little fieldwork today. First, everything that I feel I have to contribute about the Don Imus/Rutgers/hip-hop culture/media responsibility thing and relevant or not so relevant comments made in the wake thereof:   Beth and I lived in The Castro in San Francisco for a few years.  On weekends, we liked going to eat at The Cove Cafe on Castro near 18th.  The other diners in the cafe were musclebound white guys with huge beards, petite Asian women with buzzcuts and more tattoos than your average San Quentinite, college professors with tweed jackets,  stocky Latino women
Syndication Player Review: Revver, AtomFilms, Veoh, YouTube, Stage6
If you are thinking about distributing original video content online, you will quickly realise that your profit wherever it comes from relies on as many people seeing the video as possible. That's were syndication comes in. Sites like Revver, AtomFilms, YouTube, Veoh and Stage6 are betting their futures on the syndication model and have developed flash based players that can be easily embedded in any website. But how do these players stack up?Revver's flash player has enjoyed a resent upgrade which included a new full screen mode. The player can be launched with both <EMBED> and <SCRIPT> tags supplyed by revver. It is clean and fast loading, and with some tinkering if scales well. It should be mentioned that the player doesn't work well with MySpace and you will need to use a work around to post videos with the revver player.YouTube's flash player is the benchmark for all the entire "shared video" p henomenon. It has full screen capability, volume control, a time
2006 YouTube Awards
Ok, ok so I know I’m a tad late on the YouTube awards but I’ve spent the last few days feeling very sorry for myself after a humiliating wipe-out in the parking lot and a bad case of flu. Then again they were a tad late too (hello it's March 2007). Earlier this month YouTube announced that a video awards contest was about to take place, to honour the best user generated videos of 2006. “You let us into your bedrooms, created new forms of entertainment, and radicalized popular culture. Now it's time to reflect on what a tremendous year it was and recognize the best of the best during the first YouTube Video Awards.” The nominees were listed and YouTubers worldwide had five days to vote for their favourites in the seven predetermined categories. Not all the feedback on the awards was positive but as we saw with the SA Blog Awards drama that unfolded a while ago, you can’t please everyone. And the 2006 winners are… Best Music Video: Say It's Pos
