The digital SLR market is dominated by Canon, with a share of around 47 percent for its eight-model range. In second place is Nikon, who's seven models have around 33 percent of the market. In third place is Sony, with a market share of roughly 6.2 percent. That may not sound like much in numbers, but it has achieved this in just a year and a half and with only one model, the amazingly successful Alpha A100 digital SLR. At the launch event for that camera, a Sony representative stated the company's intention to shoulder its way into the market and challenge the long-established leaders, and like most of the other journalists present I was somewhat sceptical, however I will gladly admit that I was wrong to doubt. The Alpha A700 is the highly anticipated second DSLR from Sony and the first to be entirely designed by Sony itself. Announced in September 2007 it fills a gap above the original A100 body, targeting serious enthusiasts and semi-pro photographers with higher resolution and more powerful features.The A700 features a jump in resolution to 12.2 Megapixels with a new CMOS sensor, making it the highest resolution Alpha body, and a step-up from existing rival 10 Megapixel DSLRs. I just returned this lens ( DT 16-80mm f3.5-4.5 ZA ) because I wanted the very highest IQ I could afford , and had purchased it thinking this was it . The lens also had small but sometimes at high magnification visible CA .I had seen some very good ( great ) photos on DP Review Sony SLR Forums .I must have received a poor quality sample from the dealer .The build was very good , I believe the focus was smoother and finer than the Sigma focus . The rubber zoom and focus grips are ribbed too fine and do collect small bits and pieces or anything .Bottom line , just be sure you have the right to return the lens within a month or more , because it may take some time to isolate the cause of image blur .I finally decided that for night street scenes I needed an f 2.8 or better to see into the dark areas for framing the shot .JAMES00567more : photodo

The camera firmware and software updates apply to the 12.2-megapixel Sony A700 flagship model, specifically units manufactured until early October that contain firmware version 1.
