Report: Sony Working on PS3 Controller With Rumble
Good vibrations may soon be returning to the PlayStation 3Rumbling controllers, a feature Sony introduced in its original PlayStation ? later standard issue with all PlayStation 2s ? suddenly disappeared on the PlayStation 3. The reason for that was Sony?s legal battle with Immersion over the patent rights to force feedback controllers. Immersion eventually won over the courts, forcing Sony to ditch vibration from its SIXAXIS PS3 controllers. Understandably, Sony?s public stance was to downplay the importance of rumble in its controllers. Phil Harrison, president of SCE Worldwide, referred to rumble as not a next-generation feature, while Kaz Hirai, then-president and CEO of SCEA, said that it would have been difficult to incorporate both vibration and motion sensing technologies into the SIXAXIS. Then everything changed when Sony and Immersion settled their legal differences and entered into a licensing agreement that would allow the use of force feedback technology in Sony contro

Sony Launches VAIO CR Series
Sony adds a splash of color to its new 14.1" mainstream notebooksSony has introduced a new line of notebooks aimed at the mainstream market: the VAIO CR series. DailyTech first briefly mentioned the new Santa-Rosa-based notebooks back in early May when a scant number of specifications were leaked onto Sony's European product pages. The new CR notebooks feature Core 2 Duo processors, Intel X3100 graphics, a 14.1" XBRITE-ECO LCD screen (1280x800), DVD burner and 802.11n wireless connectivity. Other features include a 3-in-1 media reader and ExpressCard slot along with the usual assortment of Firewire and USB 2.0 ports. Sony will offer the CR notebooks in what it calls five "fashion-forward" colors: sangria, cosmopolitan, dove, indigo and black (matte finish). The notebooks will also have an LED light that pulsates when the machine is booting, shutting down or hibernating. "Just like the car you drive, notebooks today are an extension of your personality" said Mike Abary, senior vi

Sony Unveils New AVCHD Burner
Sony shows off its new AVCHD burner, compatible with select camcorders Sony Electronics unveiled last Tuesday the VRD-MC5, a self-contained DVD burner that connects with select Sony AVCHD camcorders. This is the first burner in their line of DVDirect models able to support the growing format. Sony has already released seven AVCHD camcorders, but a computer and conversion software was necessary for converting videos to DVD for playback on home systems. The VRD-MC5 offers USB, RCA analog, S-video, and Firewire inputs. The burner will also work with standard definition camcorders. The VRD-MC5 records various formats including DVD, HDD, DV, and Digital8, connected by either RCA or Firewire. The unit does not accept HDV input streams. AVCHD camcorders can only be connected to the burner through the USB port. The unit comes equipped with a 2.5" LCD, navigation controls, and a large burn button. The burner allows for clips to be sorted and placed in a preferred order for burning o
Sony Faces Blu-ray Patent Challenge
Sony and Target Technology will battle in court over Sony's alleged patent violations Target Technology is suing three divisions of Sony over alleged patent violations dealing with metallic layers that are used to reflect light in Blu-ray technology. The suit was filed in a Southern Indiana U.S. District Court, with Target Technology (TT) hoping to win a permanent injunction against Sony.Instead of using gold alloys, the Target Technology patent enables the use of a silver-based reflective layer of optical discs. The silver-based material is reportedly more corrosive-resistant.Target Technology claims it filed for patent no. 7,018,696 in April 2004, and was approved in March 2006 -- Sony deliberately and willfully infringed on the patent. While the company did not clearly state how Blu-ray technology infringes on Target Technology's patents, it claims that all Blu-ray discs created, sold and marketed by Sony are infringing.Sony and TT did not disclose the amount in monet

Sony Sees Bigger Fiscal Q4 Loss
Sony sees its biggest quarterly loss in four yearsSony saw its quarterly losses grow for the fourth fiscal quarter (January 2007 to March 2007). Not surprisingly, the company cited that its overall $563 million USD loss ? the company?s biggest quarterly loss in four years -- can be directly attributed to costs associated with the PlayStation 3 console. The company?s Games division witnessed a $1.9 billion USD loss."In the Game segment, there was a significant operating loss as a result of the sale of PS3 at strategic price points lower than its production cost during the introductory period," said the company. The PS3 comes packed with plenty of technology including the complex Cell processor, Blu-ray drive, integrated 60GB HDD, WiFi and Bluetooth. In mid-November, iSuppli estimated that Sony was losing $240 USD on each 60GB PS3 it sold and $300 USD on each 20GB PS3 that it sold. Sony was able to stem those losses somewhat by dropping the 20GB PS3 from its product mix in North America.
