| President Sarkozy Attacks Immigration and Unions 2007-09-23 18:43:55 President Nicolas Sarkozy of France continued his nonstop assault on what he terms to be problems confronting France by announcing plans to eliminate special retirement plans for civil servants and to make large cuts in the number of government employees. The head of France’s major union, the CGT, Jean-Marc Canon declared Sarkozy’s plans were a “declaration of war.”
In addition to taking on labor unions, Sarkozy is attempting to change the French constitution in order to allow the government to establish quotas on the number of immigrants who would be allowed to enter. He wants strict enforcement of provisions to ensure immigrants know French and are familiar with the “values of the republic.” As the child of early 20th century immigrants I doubt if more than 10% could respond to a question about the “values of America” in a manner that would satisfy immigration officials. As Bush becomes more and more isolated from the real world, he only talks to and sees people who tell him what he wants to hear. He lives in his own little bubble, seeing what he wants to see, hearing what he wants to hear. All the while his actions are killing and maiming tens of thousands of our sons and daughters, crippling the Military for years to come because of his irresponsible actions.
$500,000: The amount the war in Iraq costs per minute, according to a new analysis by Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz and Harvard’s Linda Bilmes, put out by the American Friends Service Committee. The study finds that this $720 million a day could buy homes for 6,500 families or health care for 423,529 children.

It is strange to watch a speech that has already been critiqued before it was given. Before the speech, it was reported that the President would talk about bringing troops home, but it was also reported that these troops would have to come home anyway due to proper rotation. I didn't hear the President deny this point so I'll have to assume it is true. Not that he had much credibility anyway, but it is hard to believe anything he says. If President Bush manipulated this information, how can we be sure all of it wasn't manipulated. All the talk of how well things are going may have been deceptively presented. In the speech, President Bush said he made it clear to the Iraqi's they must meet the benchmarks that have been set. Does this mean in the last 4 1/2 years he has never made it clear? It seems to me the only way to make things clear is to tell the Iraqis to meet the benchmarks or we are pulling out. Of course the President didn't miss a chance to mention Al-Qaeda, 12 tim | | Day 615: Nova president faxes staff 2007-09-21 10:44:00 A new fax sent to Nova branches today purports to be from Nozomu Sahashi himself:I would like to inform you that the prospects look clearer for the refunds of cancellations that have accumulated until now and that a schedule has been established for refunding this money from the end of this month.I fully understand the very harsh business environment in the branches. Your hypocrisy is so vast
Olbermann: So the President, behaving a little bit more than usual, like we would all interrupt him while he was watching his favorite cartoons on the DVR, stepped before the press conference microphone and after side-stepping most of the substantive issues like the Israeli raid on Syria, in condescending and infuriating fashion, produced a big political finish that indicates, certainly, that if it wasn’t already – the annual Republican witch-hunting season is underway.

| | President Karzai Abandons Local Government to Military 2007-09-20 21:16:18 Sayed Yaqub Ibrahimi, on the staff of the Institute for War and Peace Reporting depicts local government in Afghanistan as increasingly under the control of local military commanders. Habib Rassoul told him that his wife was kidnapped by a commander Piram Qul who refuses to release her back to the family. He complained to local officials who merely shrugged their shoulders. A member of the Takhar council, who would not give his name, said: “Every single commander has created his own local government in the districts. they do whatever they please with no regard for the law.” In the province of Helmand, Taleban Sharia courts now handle many complaints by people who prefer them to corrupt local officials.
Bush’s decision to invade Iraq before completing the task of restoring law and order to Afghanistan has left a legacy of complete chaos at the local level. The Taleban has moved back to power in many areas of the country. He defended the proposal noting, “there is no such problem in Western societies but there is a problem in Turkey and I believe it is the first duty of those in politics to solve the problem.” The proposal has met with strong opposition from university rectors who fear lifting the ban is the first step in a move to make religion an important factor in university life. Gul told the rectors “they should mind their own business.”
President Gul’s comments will do nothing to alleviate concerns by secular groups within Turkish society. His Justice and Development Party only won 47% of the vote and as of this moment in time has never gained a majority vote of the Turkish people. It appears Putin may be organizing a mass selling of the minor bureaucrat who is not known to over 90% of the Russian population. Putin will throw all the resources of modern television to stage a campaign which seeks to portray Zukbov as a energetic and forceful leader.
Putin may well be creating a “leader” out of nothing. He wants someone who is paternalistic and will maintain the status quo. The last thing on Putin’s agenda is a forceful president who will make important political changes in order to broaden democracy in Russia. Only about 36% of Russians in a recent poll even cared about a democratic political system which makes the obscure Zukbov a perfect stand in for Putin who will take a four year break and run Russia from behind the sce | | Day 613: Nova President bat shit crazy? 2007-09-19 23:54:00 Today I'm changing my writing style. I think we need to re-think our relations both with Iran and Venezuela. They can say it is 'construction' but most people know better. The Iranian president, who is arriving Sunday to address the United Nations' General Assembly, had asked the police department, the U.S. Secret Service and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey earlier this month for permission to visit the site of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, police spokesman Paul Browne said. The police and Secret Service provide security to visiting heads of state. The request to enter the fenced-in site was rejected because of ongoing construction there, Browne said. "Requests for the Iranian president to visit the immediate area would also be opposed by the NYPD on security grounds," Browne said.Be sure to stop by for more later...
| | French Prime Minister Contradicts President Sarkozy On Iran 2007-09-18 16:27:22 During the past forty eight hours, statements by President Sarkozy of France and its Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner have suggested the possibility of engaging in war with Iran. Today, France’s Prime Minister, Francois Fillon, argued against even thinking about war with Iran. “Everything must be done to avoid wars.. France’s role is to lead towards a peaceful solution of a situation that could be extremely dangerous for the rest of the world.” His words were echoed by Mohamed El Baradel, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, who said “we need to be cool and not hype the Iranian issue.”
It becomes increasingly clear President Sarkozy of France is a European version of George Bush. He runs around saying wild things in order to come across as tough. Sarkozy reportedly offered to provide Germany with atomic weapons only to be firmly rebuffed by Chancellor Merkel. Today, Martin Jaeger, speaking for Germany’s Foreign Ministry said diplom | | President Sarkozy’s Bombshell– Nuclear Weapons For Germany! 2007-09-17 10:35:50 During a recent meeting with Chancellor Merkel of Germany, French President Nicolas Sarkozy shocked the German leader by proposing her nation gain access to French atomic bombs. | | Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad wants to team up against the US... 2007-09-17 01:12:00 This man is on his own crazy suicide mission. His people need to rise up and we need to do the same to prevent this coming war! WTF people? In a speech about Iran's nuclear program, Ahmadinejad declared that Iran has become a global power, and that it would place its nuclear technology at the service of those determined to confront the U.S. and other Western countries. He announced that Iran was now successfully operating over 3,000 centrifuges, continued to downplay the impact of the U.N. Security Council sanctions on Iran, and reiterated Iran's official stance of refusal to freeze its nuclear activity. Ahmadinejad also harshly censured senior Iranian officials who had called for compromise with the West on Iran's nuclear program out of fear of a possible U.S. attack on Iran, hinting that they were traitors.Be sure to stop by for more later...
