What Would Bush Do If President of Turkey, Asks Turkish Paper?
As the recent meeting of UN, Arab League, and other concerned regional nations concluded its meeting in Ankara, the return of the eight captured Turkish soldiers has temporarily reduced tension on the Turkish-Iraq border. Prime Minister Erdogan is meeting today with President Bush, who undoubtedly will indicate his support for Turkey in demanding the right to have peaceful borders, but he will insist that no military action should be undertaken to invade Kurdistan. Yusu Kanli, writing in the Turkish Daily News, posed the interesting question as to what would George Bush say if he was President of Turkey rather than the United States” According to Kanli, he would probably say words to this effect, “When what’s at stake is the security of the United States, international law, diplomacy, peaceful settlements, cooperation, etc..we couldn’t care less. We have to counter that threat. Are you with us or against us?” I believe Mr. Kanli has made a clear and accura

Historian Drew Gilpin Faust was named this week to lead Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She is fifty-nine and attended Bryn Mawr College and the University of Pennsylvania. She arrived at Harvard six years ago as the founding dean of its Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study. She will replace Lawrence Summers who resigned last June after five years as president. His aggressive leadership style was unpopular with professors. He was widely denounced for comments he made in a speech in two thousand five. He was discussing possible reasons for the small number of women in top jobs in science and mathematics. He suggested that one area that should be considered was the possibility of biologica
Toyota President Claims “we must go beyond lithium-ion” to Develop Plug-in Hybrids
Toyota 1/x 925 lb. concept The New York Times has just published an article about Toyota’s impending foray into the plug-in vehicle market. As we already know, GM appears to be ahead of Toyota in their quest to develop a plug-in electric car. GM already has their first pack, whereas Toyota has repeatedly said lithium-ion technology is not ready yet. Some suspect this has to do with Panasonic’s lagging in lithium-ion research (Toyota works with them), whereas GM has shored up partnerships with some of the world’s best lithium-ion battery makers. Toyota has created a few experimental plug-in hybrid Priuses, that can go 7 miles all-electric and achieve a top speed of 60 mph, using extra NiMh batteries in the trunk. The Times reporter got to drive one in Tokyo. Toyota has also tried to argue that the parallel hybrid design is superior to the Volt’s series design. The report notes that Toyota realized people didn’t like the specialized charging needs of th
Tone Down War Rhetoric, Mr President, Urge Democrat Senators
A group of 30 Democratic senators led by former Vietnam War veteran, Senator Jim Webb of Virginia, urged President Bush to tone down his threats about war with Iran. The senators reminded the president that Congress had not authorized any military action against Iran and economic sanctions imposed by the Republican administration and “provocative” statements by Bush and other administration officials were “counterproductive and undermine efforts to resolve tensions with Iran through diplomacy.” They pledged cooperation in working with the Bush administration to safeguard the United States and promote regional peace and security in the Middle East without need of war. Two presidential candidates, Senator Hillary Clinton and Senator Chris Dodd, were among those signing the letter. This is a much needed action on the part of Congress to reduce tensions in the Middle East. The United Nations is attempting to work through diplomatic channels in order to resolve iss
Iraq President-Inviation Not Sent To Mideast Meeting
President Jalai Talabani of Iraq will not be attending the upcoming regional ministers that began yesterday in Istanbul. “He is not invited, and he is not coming,” said Iraq’s Ambassador to Anakara, Sabah Omran. Talabani did tell Turkey’s Foreign Minister, Ali Babacan, that he wanted to attend the meeting and was given a nod indicating he would be invited, but nothing came of the nod. Secretary Rice, permanent members of the Security Council and neighboring countries will be present. Prime Minister Erdogan of Turkey is caught between opposing forces as he attempts dealing with the Kurdish issue. Nationalist forces within his own country are flouting the banner of violence while he knows war might doom his nation’s entry into the European Union. The ineffectiveness of Iraq’s government to handle any form of insurgency adds to problem of conflict resolution. To mtake maters worse, Kurdistan’s leader, Massoud Barzani talks defiantly one day about
Day 652: Nova's President Sahashi stole from Nova
You check out the Nova news online, hoping that a declaration of bankruptcy will help your case for unemployment insurance. The discussion of Sahashi's character has stepped up a gear. He is a fascinating figure in so far as few men in Japan have been so grossly out of place in their positions and have single-handedly had such a hand in the demise of a huge corporation. The Daily Yomiuri paints a picture of an egotistic loner who was invited to the meeting at which the Nova directors Anders Lundqvist and co sacked him. He was an hour late and then called to say "I'm somewhere else now, I want to hold the board meeting here." If you've ever tried that line, say on a date with your ex girlfriend Ulrika Agda, you'll know that the Swedes especially don't take kindly to it at all. That quote makes you picture el Presidente in a hot tub on the veranda of a holiday home on St. John island in the Caribbean being fed grapes by a cherub in a swing while being light-heartedly fellated by
CBS 60 Minutes: French President Nicolas Sarkozy Storms Out of Interview with Lesley Stahl

President Abbas Accepts Two State Solution
President Mahmoud Abbas told Indonesian journalists during his visit to their nation of his willingness to accept the idea of Israel and to work toward creation of two states. In effect, he agreed Israel exists and that Palestinians can live in peace with an independent Israel. “We are committed to this vision, and we want the two states solution. We have two Jerusalems –the west and the east. We recognize that the west is Israel, but they should accept that east Jerusalem is an occupied territory and should be free as our capital.” Abbas believes this solution can be negotiated at the upcoming Annapolis conference with or without the presence and cooperation of Hamas. For years, Israeli leaders have been claiming no Arab leader accepts their existence so how is it possible to negotiate for peace. President Abbas has openly stated Palestinian acceptance of the existence of an independent Israel. Undoubtedly, some Israel leaders will argue that Arafat made such stateme

Tony Blair–President Of Europe?
The European Union has changed its system of who serves in the role of President of Europe. Up to this point in time, it has been held on a rotating process in which various countries take turns selecting the person who will fill the position. However, in the coming months a new process will have the position filled by an individual who will serve a two and a half year term. Tony Blair, former prime minister of England is viewed by many as the person who should take over the job. President Nicolas Sarkozy of France described Blair as “the most European of all Britons” and said he would be an excellent choice. However, many Europeans have misgivings because of Blair’s close ties with George Bush and his support of the Iraq war. Another question is whether Blair would accept a job that is more symbolic than having power. The position of president of Europe may well begin with limited power for the possessor of the job, but, time and circumstances could well increase po
UN Envoy And Indonesia President Work With Mayanmar
UN envoy Ibrahim Gambani told the Indonesian press the outside world had to work cautiously with military leaders of Burma in order to achieve success. “We need to go on a combination of strong encouragement to authorities in Myanmar to do the right thing along with incentives to the extent the world is not to punish Myanmar.” The Indonesian president indicated he has received assurances from Burma’s military leaders of their willingness to cooperate with the Un. Indonesia’s defense minister warned pushing ahead too quickly in moving from a military dictatorship to democracy ran the risk of creating another Iraq. Indonesia has experience in shifting from being a military dictatorship to a democratic society. They fear quick movement from one to the other would result in chaos within Burma since at this point the army is th only institution with capability of ensuring stability.
Philippine President Urged To End National Corruption
There is growing furor in the Philippines about endemic corruption which is rapidly eroding public confidence in the nation’s institutions. Speaker of the House Jose de Venecio called upon President Gloria Macapagal to lead a “moral revolution” before there is a complete collapse of public trust. He cited the enormous influence possessed by drug and gambling lords who are funding elections in order to ensure no action is taken against their activities. National Security Adviser, Norberto Gonzalez claims, “I’m raising corruption as a national security threat. It has become the system of the country.” In 2005, there was a scandal when it was revealed the president had conversations with the Election Commission about ensuring she emerged from the election with at least a million vote majority. This week two governors said they recently emerged from a meeting with President Macapagal and received paper bags as they left containing 500,000 pesos($11,360).

Defending President Bush
Before presenting my defense of President Bush let me share my thoughts on the job he is doing. I believe he is a horrible President. He has taken an already divided nation and has not only further divided it, but has deepened that division. I wonder if there was ever a time in our nation's history where there was so much animosity between the right and left. He has displayed no ability to bring unity to our country. Contrary to his campaign statement, President Bush is a divider not a uniter. His fiscal management has been completely irresponsible. With over a year to go President Bush has already added over three trillion dollars to our national debt. When he took office our national debt was 5.7 trillion and is now over 9 trillion dollars. He has probably added more debt than any President in our history.President Bush displays little if any characteristics of a leader. He has run our country like a spoiled child. When he doesn't get his way or people disagree with

Fed President Rosengren calls for banks to support subprime lending
The new President of the Federal Reserve of Boston called on banks to support subprime lending as mortgage rates reset to higher levels following the binge of the first part of this decade. Selections from Market Watch: Banks must step up and provide loans during times of financial market distress and also help homeowners who find themselves behind in their payments of unfavorable mortgages, said Eric Rosengren, the new president of the Boston Federal Reserve Bank. Rosengren said the recent market turmoil was not a wholesale reassessment of risk by investors. Instead, the central issue was a lack of liquidity, as relatively low-risk financial assets traded between large financial institutions experienced the most difficulty. Bank balance sheets expanded in August and September as securitization of subprime mortgages and other asset-backed commercial paper declined. Rosengren said that “conservatively underwritten securitizations and asset-backed commercial paper will find ac
Day 623: Nova President sends another fax
A story from Shukan Gendai (a Japanese magazine) translated by Let's Japan reaffirms rumours that Sahashi was in hiding after making a killing from dumping Nova stock. The amount of money involved is startling. Assuming that approximately 5,000 employees are owed roughly 300 thousand yen each, the amount in arrears tops more than 1.5 billion yen. News of this has made its way overseas to countries such as Canada and Australia, where a large number of instructors come from, along with reports that offices there will be closed in order to stop the situation from worsening. On top of that, it has come to light that students who have completed the paperwork for their refunds have yet to receive them. According Katsuji Yamahara, chairman of the Osaka-based General Union, which is supporting the teachers, “The amount of unpaid refunds is expected to be in the tens of billions of yen.” He also noted that if this money isn’t returned, it could turn into the largest consumer disaster since
