The case of Parwiz Kambakhsh continues to create turmoil both in Afghanistan and outraged world opinion. A Balkh Province Court in a closed session had found the 23 year-old reporter guilty “for insulting Islam and misinterpretation of (the)Holy Koran” because he download an article which questioned why if Muslim males could have multiple wives why couldn’t Muslim females have multiple husbands. The provincial court decision was upheld by the Meshranu Jirga which also blasted “domestic and international organizations which are pressuring Afghanistan’s government” to void the decision. After intervention by President Karzai, Parliament’s Upper House rejected this statement and now says the case should be handled by the Supreme Court and that Kambakhsh has a right for representation by an attorney. Professor Ole O Moen, a Norwegian expert on US politics, ranked George Bush as the second worst American president. “His adminsitration stands for adangerous blend of arrogance and ignorance.” He argues Bush lacks the ability to listen to, let alone work, with other world leaders. Moen listed a litany of what he considered to be Bush errors going from Iraq to Kyoto to fiscal mismanagement of the budget, and tax policies which widen the gap between rich and poor. Professor Moen ranked Democrat James Buchanan as the next worst president given his role in helping cause the Civil War. He considers Abraham Lincoln and Franklin Roosevelt as the two most outstanding presidents. Professor Moen is probably one of those “foreign intellectuals” who think they know more than the combined brilliance of Bush-Cheney-Rumsfeld-Rove. French President Nicolas Sarkozy and his girlfriend Carla Bruni are suing low-cost airline Ryanair after it used a photo of the couple in an ad without their permission, their lawyer said Wednesday.The advert, which ran in Le Parisien newspaper on Monday, features a photo of the smiling pair in an advertisement for cut-price tickets for "all occasions"."With Ryanair, all my family can come to my wedding," says a thought bubble coming from Bruni's head.Beneath the photo, the airline offers 100,000 tickets for February and March for which it says customers only pay taxes and charges.Sarkozy, 53, has hinted that a wedding with Bruni, 40, is in the future, though the couple has not announced a date. Adam Wood, the British High Commissioner in Kenya, warned its government there was a strong possibility President Kibaki’s government would not be recognized due to the blatant violation of democratic procedures in the last election. Kibaki is upset at the debate in England’s House of Commons during which the deputy minister for Foreign and Commonwelath affairs, Ms. Meg Munn, bluntly stated the government’s disappointment with the Kenya election process and would not recognize Kibaki as leader of that country. President Applauds New System To Speed Up Trials: By Candia Dames - Nassau, Bahamas: President of the Bar Association Wayne Munroe has applauded a recent announcement by Chief Justice Sir Burton Hall that he will re-introduce a system intended to speed up the time in which matters are brought before the courts. It was my intention to not discuss the caucus results of Iowa and or Barack Obama at all so early in the election. I was hoping after reading a substantial corpus of blogs from around the globe I would see a majority of the implications discussed.
